PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“Art, freedom and creativity will change society faster than politics.” ― Victor Pinchuk

Spring has most definitely arrived! Flowers are in full bloom, trees are leafing in abundance, daylight savings time has thrown our internal clocks into disarray, etc., etc. Springtime in our household is filled with birthday, anniversaries and celebrations of all types along with summer trip planning and other outdoor activities…and some plein air painting!!

Iain Stewart held his workshop in mid-March to acclaim all around. He is an outstanding sketcher, drawer, painter as well as a very captivating story-teller with lots of great advice, teaching and tales.

Please mark your calendars for our next SWS monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 11th. Naomi Brother-ton, a founding member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society in 1963, will do the demonstration that evening. I am delighted that Naomi will share with us that evening, a lifetime of teaching, instruction, friendship and always positive reinforcement for the Society and its members. When Trish and I arrived in Dallas from Atlanta in 1976, Naomi was one of my first teachers. Needless to say, my admiration for Naomi is second to none. It will be an enlightening and most enjoyable evening.

Following our April monthly meting, the spring paint-out is scheduled for April 21 and 22 in historic Pa-lestine, Texas. Gaylord O’Con, Lou Bono and Ron Stephens have orchestrated a fun-filled weekend. In addition to painting in Palestine, Trish and I will host the Saturday evening gathering at our ranch just outside of Oakwood, Texas (about 25 miles southwest of Palestine). We will have a Mexican Casseroles and salads for dinner. We will show the paintings created over the weekend as well.

World-class watercolorist, Joseph Zbukvic will be our guest artist in May. Joseph will have two 3-day workshops. See Bev Boren or Lana Houseright to get on the waiting list since both sessions are cur-rently full at this time.

And last, but certainly not least, my gratitude to the Nominating Committee for their work this spring. Our new officers were voted upon at our March meeting and will begin their duties for the 2017-2018 year in June. I know we will be most ably lead by Gaylord O’Con as President, Lou Bono as 1st Vice President, Carmen Prince and Gail Cooksey as 2nd Vice Presidents of Membership, Janee Reeder and Bill John-son as 3rd Vice Presidents of Workshops, Laura Drumwright and Sharon Giles as 4th Vice Presidents of Exhibitions, Donna Mohr as Treasurer, Bill Johnson as Assistant Treasurer, Marian Hirsch as Record-ing Secretary, Sherry Daerr as Corresponding Secretary and Bryce Weigand as Parliamentarian. Thanks and more thanks to all who serve in each of the varied and diverse ways for the Southwestern Watercolor Society!

Hope to see all of you on April 11th.

MARIAN HIRSCH Spotlight on Artist of the Month

I am always mystified when people ask me how long I have been an artist. My standard reply now is that I was born that way. An intense desire for creative expression has shaped my life and I could never imagine not painting. In high school, DISD awarded me two years at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts Saturday painting classes. Those classes were taught by area college professors and one of those teachers was instrumental in my being accepted into SMU’s fine arts depart-ment. In a heyday of pop art and abstract expressionism, I was mentored and encouraged in learning the craft of painting. I was a plein air painter at a time when landscapes were considered passé. I continue to believe that painting from life – either landscape, still life or from the figure is key to continued artistic growth. After I earned a BFA degree, I worked in the advertising community as a freelance production artist until my painting skills matured. The adage about there being no substitute for brush mileage remains true for me even now. I transitioned to full time illustration in watercolor for the greet-ing card and giftwrap industry and loved those 15 years. The discipline of painting on demand, with dictated subject matter and format was a challenge I relished. The products with my artwork were very successful and could be found in most national retailers but I longed to paint with the seasons. The card industry assigns Christmas projects all year round, with fall pumpkin designs coming in March and calendar projects created two years in advance. I love being outside and painting en plein air comes pretty close to my ideal way to spend the day. The most important part of field sketching or painting is not the image itself, but the focus that it brings to your observations and the strengthened memories that come from painting what you see. The pastel paintings I created from those on location sketches in all of the spare time I could manage – either in oil or watercolor, soon found a steady list of corporate buyers. Changing mediums for me is a springboard for reaching the next plateau and level of expertise in my art. I continue to search out examples from both past masters and the current talent pool of extraordinary artists to glean a higher under-standing of the craft.  John Singer Sargent’s watercolors are a life time of inspiration and lessons. From Thomas Moran and J.M.Turner, I learned that gouache was not just for graphic designers. Robert Henri and then Henry Hensche, in their use of color, have influenced my own preference for enhanced color in my work. We are privileged that SWS brings the top watercolorists to us each year.  I have gleaned tips, techniques and inspiration from all of them, as I have from our gifted members who generously share their time and talent. Lucky us.

Barbara HughesJuly 27,1932 -March11,2017

On March 11, 2017 a signature member of S.W.S. passed away, after three years of illness. Those three years were troubling for her because she couldn’t do what she loved, which was to paint.

Barbara  Hughes was a native of Farmersville, Texas. She retired from teaching art after 33 years of service. She taught for the Garland Independent School District at Bussey and Webb Middle Schools. Ms. Hughes had a master's degree from East Texas State University where she studied watercolor painting with Charles McGough. For ten years, Ms. Hughes lived in Okinawa, Japan and taught for the Department of Defense Overseas Schools. Her paintings were influenced by the bright colors and clean lines of Japanese Art. While in Japan, she studied the art of Japanese Wood Block Painting with Hodaka Yashida and watercolor with Akira Tara. In the field of watercolor painting, her inspiration and mentor was the late Bud Biggs. She first studied with Mr. Biggs on a tour of Europe in 1968. She has also studied extensively with Tom Lynch.  Her many workshops included Edgar A Whitney, Zolton Szabo, Naomi Brotherton, Leo Smith, Ruth Wynn, Tony Van Hasselt, Claude Croney, Linda Doll, E Douglas Walton, Al Stine, Al Brouillette, and Gerald Brommer. Ms. Hughes was a Signature Member of Southwestern Watercolor Society and a past member of the board of directors. Barbara was also a member of Western Federation of Artist and Texas Wa-tercolor Society. She participated in many shows in the area and won many awards for her paint-ings. Ms. Hughes is included in the 1993 edition of " Who's Who in American Women."
