Page 4: Aqu Salary Survey 7.7.06

With so many responses representing so many different areas of marketing, this mayindeed be the most informative compensation survey we have ever conducted.

If you’re a department manager, you’ll find the compensation tables to be invaluable asa budgeting tool. You can calculate salaries based on job function or years of experi-ence, or even by region of the country.

Compensation is always a critical factor in creating professional satisfaction. But it isn’tnecessarily number one. In our survey, three other answers came out ahead of com-pensation at the top of the “very important” list:

• 70.2%—Working for an organization I respect• 69.8%—Having my skills and knowledge utilized effectively• 69.1%—Feeling adequately rewarded for the work I do (recognition, promotion, etc.)

By digging deeper, we also learned that successful marketing organizations share onecritical attribute: They not only display a commitment to long-term planning, they inte-grate the long-term plan objectives into the hiring, training, and management of per-sonnel on a day-to-day basis.

To learn even more, read on.

AFTER READING 14,784 RESPONSES,THERE’S NOT MUCH WE DON’T KNOW.

SALES GAINS ALIGN WITH LONG-TERMPLANNING.

NO.

Here’s how marketers view the success of their short- and long-term planning relative to actual sales gains and losses. HAPPINESS: THE NEW REVENUEBOOSTER.

NO.

The proof is in the pudding. There is indeed a greater likelihood of runninga successful marketing program AND increasing or significantly increasingrevenue when organizations properly align positions and responsibilities.

That’s how you keep people happy.

Of course, perfect alignment is the goal. But if you’re going to lean one way or another, lean to the too-much side. That doesn’t mean loading onmore work or tightening everybody’s deadlines. It simply means peoplerespond more favorably to increased responsibility compared to diminishedresponsibility.

IT’S NOT JUST THEROLLING STONES WHO “CAN’T GET NOSATISFACTION.”

NO.

Keeping employees productive means keeping them motivated, and thatchallenge grows with the size of the company. Our research shows thatfirms with more than 10,000 employees have the toughest time. While com-pensation is key, several other factors can influence employee motivation.

MATCHING THE RIGHTRESPONSIBILITIES TO THE RIGHT PERSONIS A BIG JOB.

NO.

It’s the old story: You’re either overqualified or underqualified. Unfortunately, too many marketers seem to think they are one or the other.

As organizations grow, so too does the percentage of those who think theirexperience level exceeds their area of responsibility.

Marketers falling into this category are primarily charged with driving communications and running mar-keting programs and events. Size of the organization and marketing budget play a significant role in deter-mining the scope of responsibilities for many in this group. Smaller organizations depend on their gener-al marketers to act as jacks-of-all-trades (from collateral production to closing sales), while larger organi-zations utilize these professionals for more specific project/program management.

PROJECTBACKGROUND

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

SamplingThis research project united the two populations of marketing and creative design profession-als into one larger marketing and design universe. This was done in order to more accuratelymeasure the respective populations by preventing crossover participation due to overlappingjob functions and responsibilities in many areas.

The survey was administered entirely via the Web using The Dihedral Group’s online data col-lection technology. Participants with known email addresses were contacted online. Others(fewer) were contacted via postcard. A valid sample of nearly 200,000 was developed fromdatabases and subscriber lists of the following organizations: AIGA, The American MarketingAssociation, Aquent, BtoB Online, and Communications Arts.

Further, participation was open to the public, and participants/members were encouragedto inform their colleagues about this project using a “Tell-A-Friend” link displaying at the conclu-sion of the survey form.

Distribution and ResponseParticipation was solicited via postcards and email the week of January 9, 2006. Three reminderemails were sent between January 20 and February 10. No reminder postcards were sent.

Responses were cut off for final editing, cleaning, and tabulation on February 21, 2006, at1:45 p.m. ET, with a total of 14,094 valid survey returns (resulting in a 7.2% response rate).

Given the size of the initial population and of these response numbers, this project repre-sents at the 95% confidence level an accurate perspective of the marketing and design com-munities collectively within a margin of error of +/- 0.8%. Among the aggregated “creative”responses, the project represents a +/- 1.1% margin of error also at the 95% confidence level.Among marketers, this error margin is +/- 1.55% at the 95% confidence level.

Compensation and BeyondThe primary focus of this research project was compensation measures. Participants placedthemselves in vocational categories for measurement purposes (for example, marketing, cre-ative, academic, human resources, marketing contractors, design freelancers).

Removed from further participation were professionals placing themselves in the followingcategories: academia, accounting/finance, sales, product development/customer service, retired, semi-retired, and those on leave.

In addition to the compensation components, the research project also focused on the fol-lowing issues:

• Skills, Professional Development, and Hiring• Organizational Structures: Intersections between Marketing and Others• Marketing Processes, Metrics, and Programs• Ethics, Accountability, and Responsibility

Population subsets of the initial sample were randomly routed through to these more in-depthmodules. Once the subsets achieved a relevant sample size, they were closed to further par-ticipation and all participants were routed from the compensation module directly to the end.

All participants, regardless of category, were presented with a Sweepstakes Entry form atthe conclusion of their participation.
