RE: Progress Reports and Conferences

Bonjour!!

As part of the reporting process for students in Grades 1 to 5, you will receive your child’s Progress Report Card on Friday, November 8, 2019 and a scheduled three-way conference. The Board- wide parent conference dates for the elementary panel are on the evening of Thursday, November 14, 2019 and the morning of Friday, November 15, 2019. Reporting for our Full Day Kindergarten students will involve a conference where our Kindergarten Teaching Teams will be sharing their students’ Kindergarten Communication of Learning Initial Observations for our Year 1 and Year 2 students. The purpose of the parent-student-teacher conference is to discuss the progress the student has made thus far, and to set goals for future success. And as such, the student is a very important part of this meeting. The conferences usually range in time from 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to prepare for the conference to make the best use of that limited time. Should you require more time please communicate that with your child’s teacher.

Below are some helpful tips for you to make the most of your parent-student-teacher conference:

1. PREPARE Read your child’s Progress Report Card. Make notes about your questions and concerns. If you require an Interpreter or are bringing one with you, please share your questions with him/her prior to the conference. Talk to your child about the report and ask “What do you want to ask the teacher?”. Make a list of the questions.

2. ASK QUESTIONS Arrive on time. Bring your child and the list of questions. During the conference the teacher(s) will review your child’s Progress Report Card and may show you samples of your child’s work. This is a good time for your child to share his/her thoughts about the teaching and learning happening in the classroom. You may at any time ask questions that are relevant to your child’s learning such as: What does my child do well?

Page 2: arberry hronicles 2019 - All Schools · Guru Nanak Food Drive & Seva Food Bank To honour the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion and a leader

What skills does he or she still need to develop? If my child needs extra help is he/she getting it? How much time should my child be spending on homework? How does my child get along with the other students? How can I help my child at home? What is the best way to contact you if I have more questions?

3. FOLLOW UP Talk to your child about the information shared at the conference. Stress the positive things the teacher said. Discuss the areas that need improvement and together create a plan as to what needs to be done. Ensure everyone has a part in that plan – your child, the teacher and you.

Respectfully,

Ms. Jess Grewal

Principal

Guru Nanak Food Drive & Seva Food Bank

To honour the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of the

Sikh religion and a leader in Equity and Inclusion, Carberry Public School will

be hosting a “Guru Nanak Food Drive” this November. Far ahead of his time,

Guru Nanak was a proponent of a single human race, in which all are

respected and honoured. The proceeds of our Guru Nanak Food Drive will go

to Seva Food Bank, serving families in our community.

We would very much appreciate the donation of items we could use to support this food drive—either

in the form of additional non-perishable food items, or by providing goods and services we can use to

help promote and encourage donations from our school community. Of course, we would be happy

to share with our community that your business sponsored this initiative. We will be collecting food

donations from November 1 to November 15, 2019.

EQAO Results

Ontario’s education system is in a period of continuous improvement. Everything from the knowledge and skills being taught to the way instruction is delivered to the role of technology in modern learning is constantly being re-examined. Student assessment is a necessary part of this improvement cycle, and EQAO will remain at the forefront, leading efforts to fashion a relevant, dynamic and innovative provincial assessment program that’s right for Ontario. Whatever the future holds, honest, reliable and transparent information about how our students are achieving in specific areas of their learning will be vital to the system’s ongoing progress.

In the spring of 2018, our Grade Three students wrote the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Assessments in Reading, Writing and Mathematics for the Primary Division. EQAO’s assessments measure the achievement of all students in Ontario’s publicly funded schools at important stages in their education. One of the assessments’ key strengths is the fact that they assess every student against the learning expectations outlined in The Ontario Curriculum and report on achievement in relation to the provincial standard.

EQAO’s assessment results are just one piece of information about students’ achievement. These scores are not included in students’ grades and do not appear on the report cards. Regular assessments conducted in the classroom remain the fundamental method of assessing and supporting students throughout their education. With all this assessment data, teachers can identify your child’s strengths and provide strategies to help your child improve in the areas that require extra work.

Students who wrote the EQAO assessments have received their Individual Student Report outlining their results.

Carberry Public School’s EQAO results have fluctuated from previous years’ results. We are examining the EQAO data to determine where our students excelled and where they were challenged. With this information we will create a teaching and learning plan to address the discrepancies and continue on the path of student success.

Early Literacy

November: Talk to your child in your first language

“The most recent evidence suggests that intensive support for the home language during the preschool years will help – not hurt- long-term attainment in English. Young children can learn nursery rhymes, songs, extended vocabulary, and early literacy skills in English and their home language with adult support.” (Espinsoa, 2008 Foundation for Child Development)

Deux Grandes Yeux Two Big Eyes

Deux grandes yeux pour regarder, Two Big Eyes to see,

Un petit nez pour respirer, One little nose to breathe

Une bouche pour gouter, One mouth to taste with,

Un grand cœur pour aimer! One big heart to love with!

Ideas for Parents:

Encourage use of your first language.

Read to your child in your first language.

Make your own books by turning photo albums into stories with pictures and words.

Borrow dual language books from the library.

Play language games like “I Spy” in your first language.

Calendar Family Activities

Play and Language

Everyday activities and play help prepare your child for school. Play is the “work” of children. Through play, your child will explore and discover the world and his or her role in it.

Week 1

Set up opportunities for your child to be messy with glue, flour, water, play dough, paint and crayons. Encourage creativity by proudly displaying their creations and asking them to tell you all about them.

Week 2

Go outdoors and build forts with fallen leaves, snow or cardboard boxes. Look for rocks to build an Inuksuk.

Week 3

Involve your child in helping you with household chores – e.g., folding clothes, setting the table, sorting the laundry – “Let’s put all the white clothes in the washing machine first.”

Week 4

Provide opportunities for your child to make personal choices about play activities. “What do you want to do this afternoon? Play outside at the park or stay here and play with your blocks or Lego?” Decision-making will encourage your child’s sense of confidence and enjoyment.

Grade 4 CCAT

During the month of November, the Grade 4 students in the Peel District School Board will write the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (CCAT). This year, the testing dates will fall within a two-week period between November 18, 2019 to November 29, 2019. You will be notified shortly of specific testing dates at Carberry PS.

The CCAT is a standardized test that assesses factors associated with learning in school. It measures reasoning skills and problem-solving abilities common to a number of curriculum areas.

Standardized tests are only one of the methods used by the Peel board to understand and respond to individual strengths and needs. A wide range of teacher-designed assessments based on the Ontario curriculum are also used, including tests, quizzes, rubrics, oral presentations, daily classroom work, questioning, projects, displays, teacher conferences and observations.

Your child’s CCAT results will be sent to you once we have received and reviewed them. The written summary will include an explanation of the results and what they suggest in terms of your child’s profile. Results are filed in your child’s Ontario School Record (OSR).

For more information about the CCAT, visit peelschools.org/speced and look for a PowerPoint titled The Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test: Information for Parents. If you have further questions about the CCAT, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or myself.

Tuesday Treat Days

Carberry is excited to offer treat days every Tuesday. Treats will be distributed during second nutrition break. Proceeds raised go towards supporting our school success goals. A variety of treats will be offered weekly, including baked chips, cookies and popcorn. Treats are nut free. Special treats such as seasonal cookies, frozen yogurt, etc., will be available from time to time. Should you be interested in details regarding product ingredients, please visit www.goodfoods.ca. Tuesday treat days will begin on Tuesday, November 5th . All treats are $1 and can be ordered online. Online ordering is open now and will remain open until October 31st for November treats. In the future, all treats for the upcoming month must be placed online by the last day of the previous month. For example, December orders must be placed by November 30th. When purchasing treats online, please select the number of treats desired each week.

Remembrance Day

On Monday, November 11, 2019 Carberry P.S. will be holding a Remembrance Day service in the gym. The purpose of this service is to recognize and honour the many contributions and sacrifices made on our behalf by all members of our Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. and conclude with the playing of “The Last Post”. Parents are welcome to attend. We will be asking students for a Poppy donation with all the proceeds going to

Page 6: arberry hronicles 2019 - All Schools · Guru Nanak Food Drive & Seva Food Bank To honour the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion and a leader

the Royal Canadian Legion. If you have questions, please contact the school office. To learn more about Remembrance Day and the Poppy campaign, please visit: www.legion.ca

Communication with Teachers

It is important that parents communicate with their child’s teachers by keeping them informed of any concerns they may have. However, the best place to communicate is not on the school yard or in the Kindergarten fenced in area prior to the start of the day or at the end of the day. During these times, teachers and teaching staff are focused on the entry or dismissal of the students and cannot give you the time and attention you may require. Please make an appointment with your child’s teacher by calling their voicemail or by writing a note in your child’s agenda. We welcome communication that is honest and respectful.

Homework

Students at Carberry Public School ALWAYS have homework to do in literacy and numeracy:

Raz-Kids Reading Program

We’re happy to inform you that your child now has access to hundreds of eBooks using the school's

subscription to Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is an award winning website where K-5 students go to read

anytime, anywhere! The site offers 400+ eBooks by which students can read, listen to, and even self-

record their reading. Books are accessible via computer, tablet or phone. Leveled readers are

accompanied by an eQuiz which show the progress your child is making. Children are motivated to

read as they accumulate star points for their efforts. Students collect the points in an online banking

system which they accumulate and spend, building their Raz-robot or Raz-rocket. Teachers receive

online updates about student efforts and progress. Raz-Kids login information will

come home with your child shortly. Happy reading!

IXL

Carberry PS has purchased a site licence to IXL. IXL is an online comprehensive learning program

which offers unlimited math across thousands of skills – all of which are aligned to the provincipal

curriculum. The program is adaptive and will adjust based on your child’s demonstrated

understanding of the material; IXL is designed to help your child learn at his/her own pace. One of

the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, all of your child’s

results will be saved so you can monitor your child’s progress!

Hallowe’en Candy

As you are aware, we have students in the school with life threatening food allergies, so we kindly request that you do not send any Halloween candy to school with your children. Students may enjoy their treats at home.

Carberry PS celebrates Hindu Heritage Month in November During Hindu Heritage Month, schools across Peel will participate in a number of activities that recognize and celebrate the rich heritage, history, culture and contributions of Hindu Canadians as well as Hindu communities from around the world.

On April 9, 2019, as part of the board’s commitment to equity and inclusion, the Peel board approved a motion to recognize and celebrate Hindu Heritage Month in November. In addition to Hindu Heritage Month, the Peel board also approved a motion to recognize and celebrate Islamic Heritage Month in October, Indigenous Heritage Month in November, Sikh Heritage Month in April and Jewish Heritage Month in May. The board will continue to recognize Black History Month in February, Asian Heritage Month in May and Pride Month in June.

The Province of Ontario declared the month of November as Hindu Heritage Month in 2016. The month of November was chosen in recognition of “Deepawali” or “Diwali”, which is a significant festival in the Hindu community.

Page 8: arberry hronicles 2019 - All Schools · Guru Nanak Food Drive & Seva Food Bank To honour the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion and a leader

On October 4, 2018, a Member of Parliament introduced a Private Member’s Bill (PMB), Bill C-416 in the House of Commons to designate the month of October as Hindu Heritage Month in Canada. The bill is currently going through several stages to become law.

Carberry PS celebrates Indigenous Heritage Month in November

Schools across Peel will participate in a number of activities in November to recognize, celebrate and honour the rich heritage, culture, contributions and diversity of First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities across Canada.

On June 19, 2019, as part of the board’s commitment to equity and inclusion and to help better reflect student identity, trustees approved a motion to recognize and celebrate Indigenous Heritage Month in the month of November. This month includes several dates of significance, including, Treaty Recognition Week, Indigenous Veterans Day, Louis Riel Day, and the Peel Community Cultural Indigenous Celebration and Pow Wow.

In addition to Indigenous Heritage Month, the Peel board has also approved a motion to recognize and celebrate Islamic Heritage Month in October, Hindu Heritage Month in November, Sikh Heritage Month in April and Jewish Heritage Month in May. The board will continue to recognize Black History Month in February, Asian Heritage Month in May and Pride Month in June.

The House of Commons officially recognized June as National Indigenous History Month following a unanimous motion in 2009. In the month of June, Peel board schools and worksites will raise and/or display the flag of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation in the spirit of equity, inclusion and reconciliation. The raising of this flag is only one of the ways we help to create spaces that are inclusive, welcoming and safe for students, staff and families.

Nov. 7 – Celebrate Peel Teaching Assistant and Early Childhood Educators’ Appreciation Day

In 2014, the board of trustees declared the last Wednesday in October as the Peel Teaching

Assistant and Early Childhood Educators’ (ECE) Appreciation Day. This year, the recognition day

falls on Nov. 7, 2019. The Peel board appreciates the important work of teaching assistants and

ECEs, and the contributions that they make in the lives of children, families and community

members.

#chooseACTION on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, November 17 to 23, 2019.

Bullying is a form of harassment. The World Health Organization says, “Bullying…demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of health-care providers, policy-makers and families.”Invalid source specified. Bullying is a relationship problem, with relationship solutions.

Each year, across the Peel board, students, staff and families engage in learning and programming opportunities focussed on actively disrupting bullying, by creating positive and safe Climates for Learning and Working, built on a foundation of healthy relationships.

This year the Peel board community will ‘#chooseACTION to STOP hate’ in their classrooms, offices, schools and communities, in order to make these spaces better places for everyone.

Establishing and maintaining a positive Climate for Learning and Working requires all of us to actively intervene on assumptions, stereotyping, bias, discrimination and hate. We must proactively act and speak in ways that are inclusive, accepting of others and values difference.

Throughout the week, we will be highlighting the importance of being an upstanding bystander by acting to stop hate:

Step 1: Stop the Action

Step 2: Name it

Step 3: Explain the impact/harm

Step 4: Ask the person causing the harm to change their behavior

Step 5: Support the person harmed.

The Peel board would like to hear about the big and small actions, pledges, and promises our Peel community values, and ask that you take a moment to share your #chooseACTION to STOP hate” moments on social media.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2012. For more information, visit www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying or

Peel Public Health shares tips to help prevent the flu

It’s flu season and we want to make sure students stay as healthy as possible this year! Influenza (flu) spreads easily from one person to another and Peel Public Health has some tips to help reduce the risk of catching the flu and spreading it:

Get your annual flu shot: The flu shot is your best defence against the flu. There are many

locations across Peel where you can get your flu shots:

Family Doctors’ offices

Walk-in clinics

Pharmacies

Peel flu clinics

Keep children home when they’re sick: If your child develops flu-like signs and symptoms

(fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue), keep them home from

school. Contact your health care provider if symptoms are severe.

Practice good hygiene: Help your child get into the habit of covering their nose and mouth

with a tissue when they cough or sneeze and throw tissues in the trash. Cough or sneeze into

a sleeve or elbow, if they don’t have a tissue. They should also avoid touching their eyes,

nose or mouth. This is how germs are spread.

Wash your hands: Encourage your child to wash their hands often with soap and water or

use hand sanitizer, especially after they cough or sneeze.

For more information, call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit www.peelregion.ca/flu.

Healthy Relationships Bolster Mental Health and Resilience

From the PDSB Mental Health Resource Team

When it comes to mental health, connectedness - the sense of caring for others and being cared for - is one of the most powerful protective factors. A positive ‘environment of relationships’ is essential for healthy brain development, which forms the foundation for lifelong outcomes such as interpersonal skills, academic performance and mental health and well-being (1).

Caring adults are key to building the skills, attitudes and habits that promote child and youth mental health. Here are some tips for families to help build strong, caring relationships:

Comfort your child when they’re upset. They won’t feel alone with their big emotions and it helps to strengthen your bond with them.

Give your child love and affection - this helps your child feel loved and valued. Have fun together! Listen attentively to your child’s feelings, thoughts and ideas. Help to label and identify your child’s

emotions (e.g. scared, frustrated, angry, sad). Try to see things from your child’s point of view. Build in quality time. Spend some time together each night around the dinner table. Show your children how to solve problems that arise through your modelling, and collaborating with

them to help solve their own problems when they arise. Be a role model by taking care of your own mental health and modelling healthy coping strategies. Talk

about your feelings. Make time for things you enjoy. Ensure your home is an emotionally and physically safe and secure environment, where children are

protected from harm. Nurture caring relationships between your child and other important people in their lives, like family

members and friends, neighbours, teachers and members of cultural and faith communities. Research suggests that the short-term intervention of even a single caring adult can make a profound difference. This also widens a child’s network of support, and makes it easier to reach out for help when needed.

At the heart of it, we are in the business of human development. We are helping children and youth discover their strengths, build skills and knowledge, develop positive attitudes and habits, and find their path. We need

to know our children and youth. We need to show we care. We need to inspire hope. We need to model the power of positive relationships.

Give what you can on United Way Giving Day – Nov. 14, 2019 Give what you can on United Way Giving Day – Nov. 14, 2019

At the Peel District School Board, our mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student – each and every day. Yet we know that there are many needs in our community that we can’t address on our own, like providing food for families that may go without or supporting communities after a crisis. That’s why we are holding a board-wide giving day in support of United Way Greater Toronto, a key partner and supporter of Peel families.

This year, the Peel board has declared Nov. 14 as United Way Giving Day to raise much needed funds for United Way Greater Toronto and the network of local, Peel social service agencies it supports. Whether it’s providing shelter for a mother and her children in Brampton, matching a child who is at risk with a mentor in Caledon, or funding a breakfast program in Mississauga for youth that would otherwise go hungry, United Way offers hope and possibility to thousands in our community.

A donation of:

$2 may go towards a breakfast program for a child from a low income family. $10 supports a child with interactive, recreational outings for one year, including healthy snacks and transportation, to

help them build their social skills and self-esteem.

$25 is enough to provide a daily homework club that gives children and youth access to computers, peer support and mentors.

This is a completely voluntary campaign and any contributions are welcome. Whether you send a loonie, toonie, cheque made out to United Way Greater Toronto, or donate through school cash online, your contribution will make a difference. Pledges of $25 or more will receive a tax receipt from United Way Greater Toronto. To receive a receipt, you must fill out the pledge form on the back and send it to school with your donation by Dec. 13, 2019. If you donate through School Cash Online, attach a copy of your receipt to your completed pledge form.

Thank you for lending a helping hand to those who need it most. Together, we can help those in poverty which wouldn’t be possible without your continued support – your local love can change lives.
