July 3, 2016, Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners:
We are progressing through the Fortnight for Freedom, program designed by the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (www.usccg.ord) to bring attention to and
action for religious freedom both here in the U.S. and around the world. One need not look
far for examples of the abuse and outright denial of religious freedom.
The example of the Little Sisters of the Poor demonstrates the aggressiveness of
government to further an agenda irrespective of the practice of religious freedom. A radical
agenda of providing drugs that are classified as carcinogenic (World Health Organization),
increase chances of triple-negative breast cancer (National Institutes of Health), which often do not prevent
conception, and other effects is fostered on those who hold for the sacredness of human life. California has just
ruled that insurers must provide elective abortions regardless of conscience.
Pregnancy is a natural possible result from sexual relations. It is not a disease or something wrong. Children
are gifts God gives to us. The fact that there is a method of spacing children that is natural and 99.5% method
effective makes no difference. The fact that virtue is needed to act properly in sexual matters, becomes a
non-issue because it is a matter of religious thinking and should be ignored by public policy.
Our government has little worry when we talk of freedom of worship — because worship is conducted inside
the church and does not get involved with the public square. “Keep your faith inside the church walls and all will
be fine.” God tells us to go out into the world and society tells us to stay in our own back yard. Out of this
privatization of religion, we are seeing a rise in radical individualism.
Indeed, we are individuals, made in the image and likeness of God, but not merely individual persons. Each of
us is in fact, a son, daughter, sibling, friend, spouse, etc. We are connected and accountable to others. We are
more than mere individuals. To focus too much on our individuality and separateness, we end up traveling down
the road of nihilism in a universe made up of me. I may let in [on my terms of course] and just as easily “kick you
out” when I weary of your novelty Eventually, I have my own universe, rule over my own loneliness, and
perversely wonder why no one wants to be like me or even like me.
I fear in part that we have developed a false compassion for others. We see some of that in the self-esteem
movement of giving everyone a trophy so some will not feel bad. Officials at the University of North Carolina
recently released online guidelines to employees on issues ranging from gender-neutral dress codes to casual
conversations about women’s shoes – in hopes of staving off the spread of this heinous disease. There are other
such examples and the list is growing.
I think some of this goes back several years when much was being said about the growth of the therapeutic
society. It is a loose term but descriptive. “Let’s help everyone feel good,” and all will be well. Religion teaches us
that even when things don’t go splendidly, all will be well because we do not focus on the immediate but far
horizon at the end of our lives.
Religious foci point to purpose, direction, commitment, true compassion, generosity, beauty, goodness,
respect for human nature, and so many of the goods that build up society. When we chop away at this freedom,
we lessen society little by little. Some may object that we are making a big deal out of some rather small stuff. I
would answer sometimes small matters are a big deal when they chew at the foundation of true liberty.
This July 4th, let’s celebrate the birth of the Constitutional Republic. Our founders put together a tremendous
framework of liberty and responsibility, perhaps the best ever written. Let us treasure our religious liberty, cherish
a country willing to protect this right and by our lives show how much we love our country by exercising active
citizenship. The rest of the world recognizes just what a treasure we possess.
Let’s keep her strong.
Msgr. Bill

Mass Intentions for the Week
Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Annual
Black Bag Collection Next Weekend, July 9-10 In next Sunday’s Gospel, when Jesus asks
“which of these three, in your opinion, was
neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” the scholar
of the law answered, “the one who treated
him with mercy.” Jesus then said, “Go and do
likewise.” You can also treat the poor with mercy by sup-
porting the Society or St. Vincent de Paul Black Bag Col-
lection. Your donations have a direct impact on the Hou-
ston community. In the past, your generosity provided over
$5.7 million in food, rent & utility assistance, clothing and
furniture to your neighbors in need. Help the Society con-
tinue our mission of Charity. Please Donate.
The Annual Black Bag collection is the only Annual Fund
Raiser for the Archdiocesan Office of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul. Funds go directly to provide services for
the Archdiocesan Food Pantry, Archdiocesan Vincentian
Service Center Furniture Distribution Program, Archdioce-
san Natural Disaster and Flood Relief Efforts, Archdioce-
san Thrift Store for Clothing and Household Items and
Archdiocesan Home Visit Program to help with rent,
electric and medical needs to families throughout the
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of
Mount Carmel will be celebrated
Thursday, July 14, 7:00 pm with
the international rosary beginning
at 6:30 pm. Following the Mass
there will be an opportunity to be
invested in the Brown Scapular of
Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The
Blessed Virgin appeared to St.
Simon Stock in 1251, gave him
the Brown Scapular and promised
privileges and protection to all persons who would
wear the Scapular and lead a consistent Christian
life. Pope Leo XIII in 1888 prescribed the
investiture prayer used by the priest in giving the
Brown Scapular.

Blood Drive Thank You
A big thank you to the 36 donors who gave at the Parish Blood Drive last Sunday, June 26. A total of 44 blood products were provided. 52 people tried to give blood. 8 people gave through the automated method which counts as 2 units and 28 people gave
whole blood. 16 people tried to give but were de-ferred; please try again. We also had 21 people who made appointments. Thank you so much for that. We had some wait after the 9:00 Mass because of many people coming in at that time. Even donors with ap-pointments had to wait a while since there are already people in the screening stations and on the tables. We will review your feedback and make every effort to respond to your suggestions. Thank you for respond-ing to the call of love and mercy and thank you for your efforts to help the blood drive run smoothly.
Next blood drive is August 28th Mark your Calendars!

CCSC is helping equip 6,500 students for the academic year? WOW! HOW CAN I HELP?
1. Sponsor a student!
CCSC’s greatest need for the Back To School program is financial backing.
It costs only $45.00 to provide each child with a comprehensive packet of academic supplies and new clothing/shoes in line with each campus’s uniform requirements. Please consider giving or organizing a drive to fund this much-needed service – at your place of business, worship, recrea-tion center or anywhere you have community relationships that care about children.
Donations of any amount can be contributed in one of two ways: - Donate online! Our secure website is a convenient way to give, and your gift can be designated to Back To School: www.ccschouston.org - Donate by mail! Simply send a check (payable to CCSC with “Back To School” in the note section) to CCSC, P. O. Box 27924, Houston, Texas, 77227.
2. Volunteer! It takes 700 volunteers to make Back To School a success! You can contribute your time and energy to this worthy cause or help inspire others to volunteer.

PEACE
The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message
of today’s readings: peace is relational. When we greet in
peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a
handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly
words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first
reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city,
Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the
“Lord’s power shall be known to his servants” (Isaiah
66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes
slightly. Paul writes of the “peace and mercy” on all who
are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that
will rest on those who accept his disciples and their mes-
sage. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal
blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our
own lives as we share it with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Parish Information
Sometimes life shifts in unexpected ways. When a ca-reer path comes to an unexpected dead end, when loved ones die or leave us, when our health fails, when our poor choices bring us low, when aging hinders our ability to contribute our time and treasure in our accustomed way: these are all turning points when the choice of a new vo-cation may present itself. Our religious history is full of turning point stories: Saul recanting Pharisaism on the road to Damascus; Thomas a Becket choosing service to the Church over service to the King; Carol Wojtyla struggling under Nazi oppression; Mary bravely facing unexpected parenthood, certain scandal and heartbreak. A story that may make you think of choices made when life seems against you, is the enjoyable and vocations relevant movie (especially for Independence Day!), Saint of 9/11. Saint of 9/11 is the remarkable story of Fr. Mychal Judge, NYC Fire Department chaplain, who perished in the Twin Towers tragedy. Fr. Mychal’s early life was framed by his father’s death, his depression-era childhood, and his alcoholism and sex-ual orientation, yet he determined on a course marked by extraordinary works of charity and deep spirituality, and became well known for ministering to the homeless, the addicted, those suffering from AIDS and those alienated by the Church and society. See Saint of 9/11 on Netflix or Amazon Video. Brought to you
by the SVDP Vocations Committee. Pray for Vocations!

¡A mi casa! Yo me quedé
Fui a mi gavetero y vacilé unos momentos
diaconado.
Lecturas de hoy: Isaías 66:10–14c; Salmo 66:1–7, 16, 20; Gálatas 6:14–18; Lucas 10:1–12, 17–20 [1–9] Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
