ARCHITECTURE IN REVIEW

Beyond a disciplinary discoursive site, the architectural periodicals constitute a privileged documentary corpus for the analysis and reflection of the architectural visual forms of representation: from the centrality of the drawing, the recourse to picture and photography, through representative experiences through the illustration or the glue. The discourse of the project is developed in the space of periodical publications, in a particular relationship between publishing and graphic design in which are played decisions that materialize specific narratives on architecture, its disciplinary discourse your critical discourse and its formal representation. From A Construção Moderna (1900-1919) until Prototypo (1999-2004) throughout a set of influential magazines – Arquitectura Portuguesa; Arquitectura; Binário; or, among others, Jornal Arquitectos, within their several series – the theory and the practice of architecture, the legitimation of certain authors, clients and discourses are produced in magazine’s pages. Integrated into the I&D Project, supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, The Site of Discourse (PTDC/CPC-HAT/4894/2012), this documentary exhibition is developed in two complementary levels for reading the architectural magazines published in Portugal during the 20th century. A panoramic level, that contextualizes the theme of research as a chronological map, a second, circumscribed focus, focused on the journal J.A. The present exhibition, steams from the mapping work in progress and function as an essay for a more expressive synthesis in a final exhibition.
