SCULPTURE MUSEUMA DAM CONTROLS THE FLOWOF WHAT IT CONTAINS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project was to design a museum to hold the art and sculpture of the surrounding San Antonio artists, and, while responding to the environment, to create a space that was inviting to the pedestrians of both the street and the enveloping river.

In response to the given task, I created a museum following the concept of a dam, which, was used asa metaphor for controlling the ow of the pedestrians coming from on and o the river. I then followed the concept with the building geometry, having the majorityof the building “rippling” behind a retaining wall emphasized with scale and material.

SAN ANTONIO, TX

THE CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECT EVOLVEDFROM THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF A DAM. THE FUNCTION OF THE BUILDINGITSELF IS TO DISPLAY SCULPTURE, ANDTHUS THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC THOUGHOUTTHE SITE SHOULD BE REGULATED AS THAT OF A DAM.

CAFETHE CAFE OPENS ITS PAGES TO THE READERS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The goal of this project was to design a bookstoreand cafe that responded to the city of San Antonioand created a connection with the neighboring building.

The response I came up with to the given task was to follow a concept of an opening book, inviting people into “the pages of the store,” emphasizing the concept on the street view of the facade, while creating a comfortable outdoor space on the opposite side including two levels of outdoor terrace in response to the outdoor area on the roof of the neighboring building.

SAN ANTONIO, TX

THE CONCEPT WAS BASED ON THE WAY A READER EXPERIENCES A BOOK, BOTH IN THE STORY THE NOVEL CREATES FOR ITS CHARACTERS AS WELL AS THE STORY OF THE READER ITSELF. A BOOK, CONSISTING OF A BEGINNING MIDDLE AND END, IS CONCEPTUALIZED IN THE DESIGN AS THE PATRON WALKS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

YOUTH DROP IN CENTER

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The goal of this project was to create a safe haven for San Antonio homeless youth to “escape” to from the bad examples and inuences found on the streetsof the city. The issue with this project was that we neededto draw in the homeless youth in need while keepingout the dangerous inuences. The building needed to include both public and private hangouts for the youth while still creating a safe and secure environment.

The response I had to the given task was to create a concept of “open arms,” essentially inviting the youth to the doors with a safe and welcoming gesture. To deal with the security, I was able to develop a geometry that allowed for views all around specic parts of the buildingwhile still creating a private feel for the private sectorsof the building.

SAN ANTONIO, TX

THE CONCEPT INCLUDED THE USE THE GEOMETRY OF THE CURVETO DIRECT THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AS WELL AS TO ALLOWFOR 360 DEGREE VIEW OUT.

SPACES WERE SEPARATED INTO PRIVATE AND PUBLIC AREAS.BEING THAT THIS WAS A DROP IN CENTER, IT WAS VERY PRONETO VIOLENT YOUTH, SO THE PRIVATE AREAS WERE FORMED AROUND AN AREA VISIBLE TO A CENTRAL SURVEILLANCE, ALLOWINGFOR THE SAFETY OF BOTH THE OTHER YOUTH AND THE BUILDING STAFF.

IN RESPECT TO THE ENVIRONMENT, PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS AND WATER RETAINING CISTERNS WERE IMPLEMENTED INTO THE DESIGN.

RIVERWALK HOTELTHE RIVER CONTINUES THROUGH THE STRUCTURE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project was to design a hotel for the city of San Antoniothat responded to the San Antonio river and grasped the ideas and culture of the city.

In response to the given task, I created a hotel thatceremonialized, both through geometry and experience, San Antonio’s most popular attraction, the river. Being at a intersection of two parts of the river, I used the concept of the continuation of theriver through the building, which, in turn, created an open air courtyard through the middle of the buildingand gave the guests views of the river from any roomin the hotel.

SAN ANTONIO, TX

THE CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECTWAS TO TAKE THE TASK OF CREATING A RIVERWALK HOTEL AND TOEXTEND THE PLANE OF THE RIVER THROUGH THE HOTEL, GIVING THE GUESTS A REAL EXPERIENCE OF THE RIVER, AS OPPOSED TO JUST VIEWS.

THE SAN ANTONIO RIVER IS A POPULARTOURIST DESTINATION CONSISTING OF MANY SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS, APPEALINGTO ANY VARIETY OF CLIENTELE WITH ITS GREAT CULTURE AND ART.

THE CONCEPT MODEL REPRESENTS A CONTINUATION OF THE RIVER, AS SEEN THROUGH A SKEWED MIRRORNECESSARY TO SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT IT IS ONLY A SUGGESTION THAT THE RIVER CONTINUES THROUGH THE HOTEL

GROCERY STORENATURE FLOWS CONTINUOUSLYTHROUGH THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project goal was to create a grocery store thatresponded to San Antonio culture and tradition, andaddressed both the pedestrian and vehicle trac. The goal was also to create a space welcoming to the surrounding neighborhood located in an area of the city where there is pedestrian activity both day and night.

In response to the given task, I created a building that responded the the immediate streets through its geometry, creating a welcoming facade to the cars as well as people walking by. I alsobrought up the topograpy to grade from the top of the structure down to the street, giving a familiar scale as you approach the building when walking.

SAN ANTONIO, TX

THE CONCEPT OF THE GROCERY STORE IS THE CROSSING OR INTERSECTION OF NATURE AND OUR STRUCTURED SOCIETY. AS WE GROW INTO A MORE AWARE AND NATURE SENSITIVE SOCIETY, THE ARCHITECTURE HAS BEGUN TO EMBRACE THE SURROUNDING NATURE INSTEAD OF JUST DIGGING INTO IT. ON TOP OF THAT, THE ARCHITECTURE NEEDS TO WELCOME THE IMPLEMENTATION AND CONTINUED USE OF WATER RETAINMENT AND PHOTOVOLTAICS.
