In these exercises the main goal is to analyse a variety of architectural principles such as light and shadow, scales, designing and modelling methods and the characteristics of different materials. There was a set of simple exercises such as reproducing and analysing a constructivist painting of Kazimir Malevitsch with designs and models.A more complicated challenge was the design of a fisherman’s hut based on two main parts, the living and the storage space.

Single family house | Apartment Building

Supervising Professor | Y. Aesopos

Project published in Department’s magazine a2610

Single family houseThe single family house was designed combining a living and a working space for a young couple. The main goal is both residents be able to use the working space in different ways and the basic design points are the contrast between solid and non-solid elements especially in the facade and the design of the ourdoor space with a garden and a route in it.

Apartment BuildingThe apartment building is located in a lot where are discovered ancient ruins which must be retained. The ground level is an open-free space with a structure made by steel and glass which let the ruins visible and in the first level there is a periodic art exhibition and a cafe. The other floors are occupied by apartments of different type and size.

The mediatheque hosts a regular library and a digital library. Two buildings connected by an aerial corridor, house these two functions. The interior of the buildings is based on a system of continuous ramps and levels which create a specific movement between the “information” (books, media etc.). The way the two buildings are placed, creates an introversion, which is expressed by an inner-yard, where labs, conference areas, bookshop and cafe are placed. The bigger building houses the regular library, space for periodical exhibitions and the administration’s offices. The smaller one houses the digital library and rooms for projections and other similar activities. The outer facades are based on a pixel technique formed by glass and concrete and the inner facades are more open based mainly on colourful glass.

The museum is placed on a hill in the highway between the city of Athens and Patras. This hill survived from a fire which destroyed huge area of green spaces along the highway. The main design principal of this object is based on a flow system, placed in parts of the lot which are influenced by physical and technical causes. This system climbs the hill creating two sections which house permanent and periodical exhibitions, conference areas and dwellings and labs for the artists which are located in the right section. Between the two sections is formed a space where there is the main entrance in the museum and a wide free space for land art.

Capacitor of housing and consumption

Supervising Professor | Y. Aesopos

Team partner | M. Chassioti

This project is designed for a lot placed in the city of Athens, near the airport El. Venizelos. The part of consumption is based on a continuous system of ramps which passes through the housing part. The stores are located in open platforms which can be easily transformed. The apartments are placed in vertical zones - pylons. The pylons are the only elements which are connected with the ground. In front of the lot there is a much-frequented road but in the back part is formed a big garden - green space, based on the characteristic planting of the area. In the ground level there are parking spaces for the residents of each pylon and the next two levels are occupied by apartments which are independent from the consumption part and they are related to the garden. The pylons are connected with levels which host public spaces only for residents (gyms, education, entertainment). These levels constitute a motivation for the residents to move through the pylons.

Project published in Department’s magazine a2610 and official site

One of the most intense memories that the piers of the port of Patras recalls is that of the promenade and the image of a wharf “flooded” with people. The project is part of the extension of the new port in the city of Patras and aims to the design of a group of apartments and public spaces. The main design element of this proposal is the contradistinction of two promenades, one which leads the walker through different situations and places to arrive at the final point of the walk and a second one in the limit of the pier which makes the walker also an observer, but from a distance, of a rotation of sites and conditions. This one is a route faster and more detached from the life inside the pier. The first promenade crosses the four buildings which house the apartments. The ground level of each building is occupied by public spaces (cafe, restaurants, libraries, conference areas , yacht club).

Participation in UIA’s international idea competition “Maximum Mixture”

Redeveloping the area by Kifissos river in Athens, Greece The abandoned industrial areas are the only ones that can be redeveloped in the cities of today. One of them is Eleonas, a central area by which runs the only river left within Athens, presently covered by a highway that splits the city in two parts. The primary target is not only the use of the river as a main natural element of the area and the mixture of uses within a new garden, but its development as a binding element between the centre and the western suburbs. We reveal the river and reform the area by relocating new buildings with a whole lot of uses. The buildings are set on rails allowing a constant change in the urban landscape. On the stable points low rise residential buildings are placed, whereas other public uses are housed in cubic buildings that run through the motion axis, achieving the maximum mixture.

Τhe study area is located in Patras, Greece. Main purpose is to develop a sustainable community combining residential areas and public uses. The residential areas include student halls which coexist with family houses organised in different types of neighborhoods. The design is generated by the concept of developing a self-sufficient community. Each neighborhood is designed based on 3 types of family apartments where community gardens are a common basis of organisation. The development of the area –economic, social, environmental- is based on a localised production coming from the community gardens. The products are sold in an open air market located in the site.Along the site an open public space operates as a filter between the residential areas. This path creates a promenade that leads to a research centre nearby the sea. The whole function of the area is based on different types of renewable energy. Pv cells are installed on the houses’ roofs and in part of the student halls building. Rainwater harvesting system is used in all buildings to reduce the water consumption and a greywater treatment system is also applied. Part of the student hall’s roof and the whole research centre’s roof is covered by gardens.

Intervention in a block in Patra

Supervising Professor | P. Lefas

Team partners | A. Athanassopoulos, E. Vigilaiou

Reformation of a neighbourhood in one of the main Patra’s roads which needed a public space for its residents. The intervention is made in a vertical way, containing interactive platforms which connect the buildings and host public spaces. A second level of intervention contains the redesigning of the open spaces between the buildings. These spaces become useful for the residents and new methods for energy storage, such as photovoltaics are added in the buildings.

Intervention in Psarofai, Patra

Supervising Professor | P. Lefas

Team partners | A. Athanassopoulos, E. Vigilaiou

Psarofai is an undeveloped area in Patra, with a large area of free spaces without specific use. The basic idea is the upgrade of this area which includes the construction of a complex of dwellings, consumption and entertainment. The nature landscape is retained and reinforced by a network of pathways which could be expanded in a bigger area and other neighbourhoods in the city of Patras.

Facade restoration, Chiusdino, Italy

Supervising Professor | F. Montanari

Team partner | E. Vigilaiou

Chiusdino is a small village in Italy known for the colourful facades, based on colours of terra di Siena Naturale. After years the facades lost their vivid colours and they have nothing to recall the old image of the village. The restoration of the facades is based on an intensive analysis of elements found in the current facades, such as small pieces which retained their colour or old photos and testimonies from residents.

Media Lounge

Supervising Professor | P. Dragonas

Team partner | M. Chassioti

The media lounge is a unit designed to be placed in the interior of a bigger space. It offers access to digital information, internet and activities based on media, such as projections, games etc.The basic idea is the creation of an object - media box which could be easily placed as a unit or as a block of units. Main characteristic is the shell of the box which is used for projections instead of screens. As a result, from the outside seemed to be a changing facade, related to the interior activity. The interior is formed by three levels- platforms in different heights, decorated with libraries, and plain surfaces for the computers.

Piquadro, Florence

Supervising Professor | Alessandro Lucchi

Team partner | K. Bakali

“Piquadro” is an italian store in Florence with accessories such as bags and suitcases.A new product line demands the renovation of the store. The main idea is the creation of a space which could be transformed according to the products. This is achieved by the design of mobiles which could be moved and change arrangement by adding or removing units. The basic materials are steel, colourful glass and plastic.

Main object of this thesis was the creation of a network of open public spaces in Athens that was implemented in sites either void or partly designed. The choice of these sites has been done based on a route which can be approached using the railway and the metro.

The concept was based on an idea of model- the network of these sites- which could be either expanded in bigger area or applied everywhere. Taking for granted that this kind of spaces are not yet part of the everyday life of Greeks, the choice of areas near stations of railway and metro has be done because these means of public transportation could become the motivation because they are public transport nodes that contribute to a constant flow of people.

The chosen root was:Moshato- Kallithea- Tavros- Petralona- St. Larisis- Attiki- Sepolia- Ag. Antonios

The main idea focuses on the creation of an open public space network in Athens, utilising void or partly developed sites in the city. The site selection was mainly driven by their proximity to railway and metro lines. The new “fragmented” park addresses both the local and supra-local scales, and thus acquires a unity in its whole.

The basic idea for the design was the creation of a toolbox, like an atopic system which can be applied in sites and each site is treated in 3 different levels. The site is the base upon which the proper tools are posed. There are 3 categories of tools: the base, the surface and the mechanisms. Each site as a base has a different material where are placed surfaces for the pedestrians, trees, bike lanes, bike changing system and the mechanisms.

There are two thematic sections: Moshato, Kallithea, Tavros and Petralona have a more athletic character while St. Larisis, Attiki, Sepolia and Ag. Antonios have been given a more cultural character.
