The lake of Satamalahti has been a basic carrier of the quality and identity of the Mikkeli centre throughout its history.
The recent process of modernization has separated, the city from the water potentials. In particular by means the introduction of vast infrastructures such as the harbour/ industrial infill, the highway and treatment plant.
These elements contributed to the functional and spatial development of Mikkeli, yet reversing, step by step the relation with the lake edge which shifted from being a “front side” to be a “back side”. This process occurred in many water cities around the world and in Finland. In a present time of changes in economical and social values this condition is a burden.
Nevertheless the size and ambitions of Mikkeli allows for a vision which reinstates the lake as the hearth of its future development.
The projects provides a robust spatial-flows framework for change which integrate an hydrological, ecological and spatial bias.
The proposal has been conceived as a bridge between guiding principle (best practices) and the real-world situation making use of the full potentials of the site.

The interior space is flexible and adaptive to different functions. Partition panels are stored in the walls and floor panels are in the ceilings. Large varieties of quality spaces eg. double volume foyers, auditorium, laboratories, offices could be achieved by simply movement of panels.
The design of the future landmark of Mikkeli starts with a simple geometry - SPIRAL. It gives the most natural and everchanging continuous space, it also brings interesting dialogue between negative and positive space.

C O N C E P T
The design for the Integrated Teaching Buildings focused about a central, sculptural pedestrian circulation route comprised of stairs and escalators that links the new Cultural Plaza, elevation 10.4 with the Chung Chi Campus Plaza, elevation 37.4. The project consists of two podium structures flanking this stair and two towers, one (Building 1) bridging the beginning of the Grand Stair and one (Building 2) placed uphill and parallel to the circulation route.
T H E B U I L D I N G
An iconic piece of architecture, prominently located at the Cultural Plaza, signifying the start of a journey both internally to the teaching facilities and externally via the circulation route to the mid-level campus. It provides an entry structure to the development, the largest lecture halls (300 - 600p) at the entry level and the lecture halls (150p), an International Centre, Learning Commons, Computer Centre and classroom spaces placed on the floors above.
The Grand Stairway is visually inviting by lifting and lightening the structural elements that bridge across its connection to the Cultural Plaza. The visual connection from the lowest to highest points of the stair ensures this being an active and useful campus circulation route.
F A Ç A D E T R E A T M E N T
The exterior expression is to combine solid and glazed treatments that express and enhance the interior function of the buildings. Locations within the structures that provide the best views, often at the building’s corners, are to be developed to the fullest. These spaces may be expressed through additional glazing opening the vistas to the interior while aiding the reduction of the visual mass of the buildings’ exteriors.
Lining the Grand Stairway with transparently glazed interior circulation spaces creates visual links and activates both indoor and outdoor spaces.
The project is to convey its purpose as a contribution to the academic community through the use of materials and colors selected. Natural materials such wood and stone and the use of color is encouraged for both interior and exterior of the project.
S U S T A I N A B L E D E S I G N
The design is to incorporate appropriate sustainable design strategies which enhance function and long-term use of the structures. Energy efficient MEP systems as well as passive approaches, such as daylighting, solar control and shading, green roofs, etc., are to be incorporated.
The building targets on LEED Platium certificate.
L A N D S C A P E
Existing landscape will be enhanced by the extensive roof terraces, located on level 4, intended not only to make the new structures more sustainable, but also to weave the lush landscape from the adjacent hillside into the buildings and anchoring it intimately in its surroundings. The internal and external planning of the facility is being considered to include student breakout spaces to enhance both individual study and group gathering spaces throughout the project.

For this proposal, the total site area is 8,487.90sqm, buildable site area is 4,243.95sqm. The above ground GFA is 50,839sqm; the below
ground GFA is 16,552sqm, plot ratio approximately 6.0.
For the top level of roof is 120m from ground, from top of roof the highest point of extended feature is 125m. The building orientation is
East 18 degrees from North, the wider facades are all South facing and overlooks the Fuzhou Main River and the context open views.
There are 4 levels of Podium, locating at the roofs are gardens to be used by the building occupants; there are 2 levels of underground
car park, at Basement 1, there is the Treasury Area and Safety Deposit Box; Basement 2 is where the loading and unloading area . Two
levels of Basements altogether have 243 car parking spaces and approximately 1,360 bicycle parking spaces. Above ground there are 18
nos. of at grade car parks.
Inspired by aspiration for the future of Haixi Economic Zone, our design proposal embodies the balanced and stable appearance suitable for this important bank institution. Two symmetrical sides of the tower in equal proportion are united by the central atrium and architectural design of the building.
Our initial concept originates from careful observation of Fujian region and the Haixi Economic zone. As with aspiration for design of the Bank’s logo, we take essence from geographical composition of Taiwan straits with two sides, which are united to create new economic zone of national importance. Looking at Fuzhou city from sky, we discovered that Fuzhou city it-self are also separated and united by the city’s important river, Min-River. Looking closer, the current masterplan design of the Haixi Financial Street area also has two sides, D2, D4 and D6 to the east, D1, D3, and our site D5 to the west which are again united by the central Landscape feature element.
B U I L D I N G D E S I G N C O N C E P T
Our podium design is inspired by the energy and life of China’s civilization. Our initial concept originates from observation into the mapping of energy generated by modern development of China’s southern coast-line from Beijing to Shanghai, and to the Haixi Economic Zone. We envisaged the life-form and energy concentrate towards the coastline from country level, to regional Haixi Economic zone, then closer along the banks of Min River and the future of Fuzhou Haixi Financial Street Zone. We began to see the podium as part of heave of activity and energy generated by the future occupants of this area. Rational 1m x 1m grid was applied to the entire surface of the podium. By randomly alternating between solid and open or glazed panel, and allowing the openings to be concentrated towards the Min River, it resulted in beautiful motif of pattern. We were also inspired by the Fuzhou culture for the choice of materials; variations created in the design of the podium façade and the materials are reminiscent of variation of colours displayed in the Shoushan stones.
P O D I U M D E S I G N C O N C E P T
Like concept of the traditional Chinese courtyard buildings, the central atrium feature links all the levels of the building together to unify the development. Meeting rooms and gathering spaces next to the atrium, ranging from single story to multiple height rooms, will become focal points of office floors where the workers come to share and create new ideas. Generous space around the lift lobby, looking into the atrium space, can become social meeting point.
The Central Atrium also creates environmental benefit; during the summer, air-movement generated in the atrium will naturally ventilate the office floors. In the winter air is trapped and sun-light into the atrium will create warm and comfortable environment. Therefore the atrium feature both conceptually and literally unites the development further re-enforcing the idea of unity.
Design and pattern of the atrium interior intensify towards top of the building where important decisions are made, creating dynamic perspective like movement of gold and wealth concentrating toward the top of the building. Exposed lift structure and silhouette of people behind the coloured glass further animate this important space.

Landscape, Active Ground:
General Landscape strategy for the entire site consists of creating different
landscape zones to enhance and maximize the spatial experience. Landscape
design incorporating mixtures of hard paving and line of large scale trees create
civic like frontage to the site and the entrance.
The objective is to establish a unique and visually distinct entrance plaza and spaces
inside each foyer space to enrich the experience of moving from one to another.
This will be achieved by extending the landscape space across the plaza, through
the drop-off area and banking hall. In effect the ground planes appropriate a city
street and combines with a foyer space to establish a unified identity. The paving
strategy includes various distinct colours of concrete pavers in irregularly sized
and overlapping rectangles parallel to the walking path. Rectangular bands of
planting within paving contain a variety of native plants. Mixtures of art sculptures
and landscape features such as reflecting ponds complete the tone of public-space
that is a hybrid of civic like, yet calm and cultural urban space.

The concept for the landscape design was inspired by Chinese character Zhou (Chinese: 州; pinyin: zhōu). This character was taken from Fuzhou (Chinese: 福州; pinyin: Fúzhōu) and has its root in sandbanks of a river. The graphical elements of the character were broken down into the constituting elements, the river and the sandbanks. The vertical lines of river part are used as axial or planar space throughout the site and the sandbanks are used as landscape elements to develop landscape design ideas, such as water feature or landscape furniture.

The design for the new office building for Pinghua is inspired by the spectacular world-famous natural topography of Chongqing and the city’s unique relationship with the mighty Yangtze River.
The building consists of an iconic pair of towers. Its dramatic exterior shape with its narrow gap is reminiscent of the steep geological formations found along the Yangtze River gorge. The very transparent glazed cladding of the gap can be seen as a waterfall cascading towards the river.
While the flow of water symbolizes prosperity and fortune, the rock-like shape of the towers firmly roots the building in its local environment.
The building will provide top grade-A office space. While the façade cladding of the towers is inspired by layering of natural rock sedimentation, it is highly intelligent as it optimizes daylight provision to the interior and blocks out unwanted solar heat gains.
The atrium space between the towers create office spaces as well as inspiring social gathering spaces for office staff. The very light cladding of the atrium is highly intelligent providing optimum daylight and natural ventilation to all office space. The atrium acts as the ecological heart and lungs of the building.
At street level a small high-end retail mall acts as an important urban connection to the river front park. The building thus fully engages with its surroundings and forms an integral part of the urban masterplan for the new CBD.
i n s p i r a t i o n
This project is located in the center of the Jiangbeizui CBD area, Jiangbeicheng, Liangjiang new district of Chongqing. Across the river to Chaotianmen, it faces Jianglingjiang to the south, and Yangzi River to the east. Lifan Center (LFC) is located to the west wing of the block, and Yueyang project is at the east wing. There is a planned road at the north side and 1st Beibin Rd at the south side. The altitude different between the south and north side of the block is 39 meters.
The proposed building is highly visible from major vantage points in the old town and from both major bridges across Jialing River. This is an important opportunity to create an iconic landmark building in Chongqing.

The leisure activities – shops, restaurant and gallery - will serve not only the users of the building but also the neighborhood. It will increase the fluctuation in circulation so that a high level of activity in the lower floors can be guaranteed outside the normal working or shopping hours.
The building itself embraces the square and constitutes the horizontal frame. Vice versa the landscape as the horizontal element complements the building by providing an outdoor space to the functions of the interior.
The profile of the site with the level difference of the north and south side is a starting point for an inclining movement on a land¬scape in form of an artificial hill, picking up the urban context and forming a clear gesture towards the riverfront with the big atrium space providing visual connection.

The design of the façade is directly inspired by the natural geological rock formations that characterize the region along the upper Yangtze River. The design is consistent with the concept of the shape of the towers, it supports the idea of rooting the building firmly in its natural setting. The sedimentary layering of rocks, evolved over millions of years, is translated into a modern expression of the façade. The façade aesthetics are thus abstract, yet its tactile articulation is reminiscent of the cliffs of the Yangtze River gorge.
The additional unique feature of these horizontal stripes on the façade is not only aesthetic but also a functional purpose to serve as sun shading and guarantees for a comfortable climate in the office space

The conceptual idea of the façades is supported by a thorough environ-mental analysis. Solar heat gain studies have been conducted for all fa-çades. As some of the façades are directly exposed to the eastern and western low-angle sun, the most effective way to reduce solar heat gain is to re-duce the amount of window glazing. At the same time overhanging fa-çade elements provide shading against the high-angle southern sun.

LANDSCAPE DESigN
p o d i u m g a r d e n a n d t e r r a c e s
The whole ensemble is composed of two components merging into one unity: The building and the terracing landscape. The plaza is the jewel which provides different qualities of atmosphere (landscape terraces with water features, bars, restaurant inside with their terraces)In its continuous movement is a composition. First a curving landscape that fades into the riverfront plaza and finally sweeps up at the end to become a façade design element that will provide sun shading. The horizontal lines of the façade are projected to the plaza where it becomes urban furniture, either as pads that can be used to rest on or the pits that can be used as an outdoor space for the restaurant/café.In their arrangement this urban furniture produces a soft urban landscape.
i n t e r f a c e
The differentiated tower volume offers varying conditions and spaces inside, while effortlessly imbedding itself in the surrounding context. The tower façades design is integrated in the overall geometry of the building and used as the starting point of a swirl wrapping around the foot of the tower. The façade drapes down the podium next to the tower footprint where it forms a continuous plaza and landscape all the way to the riverfront.

Introduction 簡介The Water Ladder
The Water Ladder adopts a holistic and ultimately flexible solution for the reha-bilitation of land which for years served as the location for Taichung’s Shuinan airport. The Taichung Gateway Project calls for a park to form the heart of the development, linking different zones including an Innovation R & D District, a Cul-tural Business District, Gateway District and an Eco Residential District.
Concept Diagram: Organic layout of trees are achived over a period of time. Organic nature forms takes over the human order.
Concept Diagram: Interface of grid from urban edge to organic growth of trees.
Acknowledging the location’s historical eponymous link with water, the Water Lad-der comprises a unique strategy that unifies the site along a north-south axis using a newly created waterway and from east to west by creating a series horizontal plots providing a framework for multiple-uses that at also allows sufficient scope for future redevelopment of the land as required.

The Taichung Gateway Project calls for a park to form the heart of the development, linking different zones including an Innovation R & D District, a Cultural Business District, Gateway District and an Eco Residential District. The gateway city covers 254-hectare areas includes the former airport, 68 hectare is park.Acknowledging the location’s historical eponymous link with water, the Water Ladder comprises a unique strategy that unifies the site along a north-south axis using a newly created waterway and from east to west by creating a series horizontalplots providing a framework for multiple-uses that at also allows sufficient scopefor future redevelopment of the land as required.
In a city rich with over four hundred parks and open spaces the ‘Water Ladder’ is unique in its aim to create a living core for the Taichung Gateway Project that engages the district’s workers, residents and visitors in a consciously symbiotic relationship with nature.Far more than a decorative or purely recreational strategy, the Water Ladder establishes a new paradigm for contemporary living based around three key components: a Water System, a Ladder System and an Activity Network, bringing into existence the interstices between nature, the urban and the agricultural.

River Water河水
1. River Water Purification Facility + Landscape Water Feature: 河水凈化設施+水景This facility is intended to enhance what we see as an important asset to the overall development. By addressing the issue of river pollution, it creates opportunities in de-veloping a landscape where the residents can interact more with the river and provide water to the other Landscape features
2. Water Canal: 運河The runway has been a vital component in the old days when the site was used as an Airport. We want to maintain the legacy of the Airport days by converting the runway into the waterway, where people gather, and become central focus of the park.
3. Detention Basin + Wetland Habitat: 蓄水窪地+生態濕地We see the Detention Basin not only as functional element of water to regulate the storm-water during the rainy season but something people can interact with during the other season. By making the Detention Basin as Wetland area, it allows the people to gather around and actively helps to diversify the local eco-system.
5. Viaduct: 高架水橋The main function of the viaduct is to supply purified grey water to the Landscape water features over existing roadway. The system is intentionally exposed so that the visitor can see the workings of the park as well as serving other functions such as be-ing waterway for the transportation boats.
4. Grey Water Treatment + Landscape Water Feature: 中水處理+水景Water Purification Park has grey water treatment facility with aeration pool to oxidize water, sedimentation pool to filtering solid, and de-nutritionize pool to remove organic matter by tree planting above. This water purification system is displayed as a land-scape feature throughout the park where visitors can learn the water recycling process.
6. Water Tower: 水塔Water Towers and water pumps are located along the length of the waterway to regulate the water system. It is powered by solar panels placed over the canopy. The canopy moves to follow the sun’s movement during the course of the day and fold its leaves to protect itself from strong winds. In essence it is a kinetic sculpture to articu-late the park as well as being functional element of the water system.
The Water System connecting the existing green corridor situated to the north of the site with the new building developments in the south constitutes the main artery of the Water Ladder. A combination of grey water and freshwater, the system will both purify and transport domestic waste water using solar power through artificial ponds and aquaducts and provide recreational and conservational amenities such as a reflecting pool and wetland habitat as well as climate-responsive, energy-generating water towers recalling the structure and form of Taichung’s city tree, the Astonia Scholaris.

Water System / Active Ecology Avenue水系統/生態大道The Water System connecting the existing green corridor situated to the north of the site with the new building developments in the south constitutes the main ar-tery of the Water Ladder. A combination of grey water and freshwater, the system will both purify and transport domestic waste water using solar power through artificial ponds and aquaducts and provide recreational and conservational ameni-ties such as a reflecting pool and wetland habitat as well as climate-responsive, energy-generating water towers recalling the structure and form of Taichung’s city tree, the Astonia Scholaris.
In Taiwan, the rivers are distributed throughout the island, from the mountain-ous highland to the coast area and into the sea. The existing river to the north of Taichung Gateway Park is linked to a web of other city rivers and water systems merging and converging until it reaches the Taiwan Straits. The key concept is to convert the remaining existing airport runway profile into landscape water system to sustain and assist the nature’s growth in the form of articulated landscape water feature. The water system proposal uses water sourced both from recycled grey water and treated river water, which are ultimately connected and are part of the larger city-scale river network system.
Landscapes and cities today co-exist within large and complex global ecologies. Even the smallest garden or building is an active agent in a large-scale environ-ment changing over time, this could be especially true where the grey waters col-lected from the urban area are recycled for the park water system.
By combining the water system from both the river and grey water collected from the urban area, the park exists in the middle of both nature and man-made sys-tem. We propose to make visible this articulated system so that people can see and learn the workings of the park.

Ladder System /Agricultural Parkland梯級系統/農耕公園Following the axis of the waterway, the Ladder System facilitates the rehabilitation of the land from its previous industrial use as an airfield to a more natural equilib-rium.
Borrowing from existing agricultural principles and forming an extension to the existing agricultural zones to the north of the site, the Ladder System divides the land that borders the Water System into “plots” that are open to a variety of uses by the public. Amongst the principle uses envisaged for these plots is the creation of agricultural parkland in which local residents, schools and tenants from the In-novation and Cultural business districts may grow their own crops and flowers as well as other more leisure related activities.
By giving people direct access to the land and responsibility for its cultivation, the Ladder System is the key element in the creation of this new community based on the symbiosis between man and nature.

The Activity Network concentrates facilities and amenities in keeping with the zones delineated in the Masterplan, including an academic corridor or education street connecting the established higher education institutions that border the site to the Innovation R & D District, as well as retail, conference and corporate facilitiesgrouped in the Gateway District, and museums and other cultural facilities within the designated Culture Business District.
Various local specific programmes such as food-street and different element of art including open theatre and Artist Street are incorporated which are the critical element of Taichung’s streetscape and urban landscape.

Gateway District contains the Civic related programme of the Gateway Develop-ment including Convention Centre, Hotel, and Movie City.
The Landscape character of this area also reflects the civic nature of the develop-ment including Civic Plaza, Central Park, and Multi-purpose Event Space.
The Idea for the Entertainment Centre is to combine both the Movie City and Con-vention Centre into a single landmark building. Concentration of the programme allows for efficient use of the land while creating opportunity to create strong build-ing form that act as dynamic anchor points in the urban vista running along the Park-avenue.

. Nasjonalmuseet (completion in 2018)
. Area: 1.2 hectare
. Tasks: sketches and preliminary report (forprojekt). Major duties: detail design, drawings production and illustration. Office: Østengen & Bergo Landskapsarkitekter AS associted with Kleihues + Schuwerk Arkitekt
The office engaged as landscape architect for the new National Museum in Vestbanen. The landscape design mainly based on the architectural ideas in Kleihaus & Schuwerk’s winning proposal. This consists of the construction of an intimate and sheltered space - Museum Square, in front of main entrance and surrounded by the museum and the Western Railway. The space provides seating which integrated to the building facades. The museum is perceived as an urban space around a large Eucalyptus tree (tuntre), with a single, flexible ground that can accommodate crowds, permanent or temporary artworks, cafe chairs and queues.
Sitting stairs in the sun-facing slope up to Dronning Mauds gate provides meeting or resting space for visitors. The diagonal walkway leading to museum’s main entrances allows step-free universal access.
The building’s stone facade will be planted villvin, with reference to the city’s tradition of central stone and masonry. Plating and environment improvement works in surrounding streets and square is also included so as to provide an united enjoyable environment for the new museum.

. Project: Urban Space Design for Sandes City Center . Description: Competition to develop concept for design of new urban space in Sandnes Central Station. Major duties: Assisted and involved in the design concept, development, visualization. Office: Østengen & Bergo Landskapsarkitekter AS associated with Helen & Hard Arkitekt AS
The concept is building of a new landscape in the site with respect to the city origin. It is a creative process involving local development to integrate the local culture and urban development. The name of the town- Sand-nes implies sand and clay accumulated at the mouth of rivers. This contributed to the industrial base for the town in form of brick and ceramic production. The idea of the project is to recreate the geographical sedimentation process in the site. We simulate the water flow process from the city, through the entrances and deposits sediment and masses as delta landscape.
This landscaping creates good circulation over the plaza, dunes and ridges with provide shelter, viewpoints and activity spaces. Instead of fixed designated space, it is an ever changing process and welcome the co-creating with local development. Biodiversity is the fundamental, we stimulated how nature could take over the plot in 500 years perspective.
