CurrICuLumWith experience in several sectors, from a municipality studio to a international private studio and also to a research laboratory, my pathway is rich in diversity. Working mostly on rehabilitation in what concerns to practice - at DGTL - and theory - at LFTC - I had the great opportunity to make an internship in Rome - at MODOstudio - that has enabled me to have a international experience in architecture competitions and also at personal level. Curious, pertinent, dreamer, thinker, obstinate, are some of my flaws.

My graphic skills are summarized to the utilization of autocad, revit building, adobe photoshop, adobe indesign, adobe illustrator, lightscape, coreldraw, sketchup, microsoft office, learning blender, 3DSmax and rhinoceros.Beyond that, I’m able to speak in different languages as Portuguese (native), English (high intermediate level), French (basic level), Italian (low intermediate level), spanish (basic level) and German language (basic

level). I’m able as well to provide trainings since I have qualifications for that.

Furthermore, I’m also author and co-author of some papers, ones published, others submited and some accepted but not published.

Pleases me the intended architecture - creative process more than final result - pleases me to think in social problematic issues directly related with urban planning, to analyse architectural history evolution, facts related to project, pleases me the rehabilitation/regeneration, pleases me new constructions, I like the combination of old with contemporary, pleases me to develop creativity and critical spirit, to learn, grow as an architect, and to experience new perspectives and ways to perceive and feel architecture.

CuBoaCaDemIC work - arChITeCTure IICUBEDuring the 2nd year of architectural studies (5 years) it was developed many academic works being one of these the “CUBO” here presented.

This exercise consisted in the projection of a single house for a architecture student in a quadrangular 9x9x9 mts shape. The area allocated for the implementation of the object was located in a peripheral area of Vila Nova de Famalicão strongly characterized by its rural background, where the terrain is relatively abrupt.

However, there is a road with average speed bordering the intervention area to the west side and on the east side a complex of buildings with a considerable altitude that ended up to “visually invade” the project area. Since the city center is relatively close, and the duality of character of the land [countryside/city] had a considerable weight the binomial rural/urban won sense in what concerns the starting point of project design.

Hence, the form enclosed at the outset was thought like a sort of shell in order to protect the housing movement and noise caused by passing cars and also to protect the inhabitant’s by the (avoidable) observation of other people.The housing is designed as open space and consists of a level 0 and two intermediate levels, being level 0 relative to social area (living area and kitchen), on the 1st intermediate level is located the working area, and finally , at the middle floor above, the sleeping area (more sheltered).

The east and west facades are completely blind and the north and south facades completely open, being those the ones that are directed to the tranquility (adjacent to the object) which disclose either within the housing.

MULTIMEANS CENTREThe presented proposal is the result of an academic exercise that consisted in developing a multifunctional building capable to accommodate different manners to materialize the artistic culture. In order to explore different ways of representing culture, it was thought for this project to “expanding” sound, “encourage” the reading and “settle” art in a figurative sense.

This thought gave rise, essentially, to a dissimilar volumetric composition with 4 volumes corresponding each one to the functional inside space.

Located in one of the city main entrances (north), the intervention area presents a somewhat ambiguous character, such is the functional diversity simultaneously in one space - in this case, multi-functionality is not revealed as a positive development since the area is disorganized and somewhat neglected in relation to urban planning.

Therefore, the building is composed of an auditorium, library/media center, exhibition area, common living areas and administrative areas distributed in three levels.

It was intended with this equipment to contribute for further explorations of amorphous urban environments capabilities, contributing to a more coherent and conscious development of urban fabric and also to a greater arts diversity in Vila Nova de Famalicão.

TEXTILE INDUSTRy MUSEUMIn the sequence of an urban planning exercise, the following challenge was to develop an architectural object replacing the old textiles museum existing in Vila Nova de Famalicão framed in a strongly residential area regarding the previously proposed planning.

The stylization of fabric texture served as a reason to develop the concept adjacent to the project.

The broken lines shaping the covertures’ are the result of extensive studies about textile composition, searching for an answer to understand what that represents and how could be represented, because it was not aimed that the project had to reflect the evident image of interwoven textile, trying to escape from evidence.

Regarding the interior, it was intended to involve the user on a journey marked by lighting reentrances forming

a pathway according to the visitors/users interests (exhibition, training, archives, small conferences, etc.).

In addition to the exhibition area, the program contemplates also smaller rooms for specific formations and also an archive room for public consultation. It also includes a room for conferences and common social areas.

Regarding outer space, it was intended to expand the inside exhibition area through a exterior traced path able to accommodate art works involved in an green area, giving the opportunity to break out from common exhibition areas inciting curiosity to public audience and, in a functional sense, forwarding the visitors to the building main entrance.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING CENTRESeen in this exercise as a set of urban focus that concentrate much of the population and also the potentialities and problems of contemporary societies, cities are nowadays designed according to the car contributing somehow to the neglect of urban built environment. Specifically in Vila do Conde there is no exploitation of the capabilities and playful/cultural activities. A bet for a more dynamic city fell into training and regeneration of buildings in the city. Conceptualising the object, started with the principle that it is the light that gives meaning to space and this is what takes place on the exploitation of images and meanings of built objects. This intangible element, can be intuitive, private or subjective, but can also be rational, measured and objective, and that is because the light and objects belong to each other. Thinking architecture in a sensorial perspective so that it

reaches the space user, manipulating their perceptions, sensations caused by the resulting architectural object and motivation of generating actions of its users. The user and architectural object must complement each other, must be balanced and mutually adapted in their functional and regulatory aspects.Inserted into a multifunctional polarity, the intervention area is composed of different types of occupation.The proposed building includes training areas (workshops), administrative areas, common areas, library, archive, and an interior open courtyard, distributed in six volumes corresponding to certain functionalities that differ in height and number of floors.The urban environment is a communication way in which is expressed the level of built and urban void, a way to communicate without using words, communicate through elements that constitutes messages which are different from person to person. This is what gives us information about built environment, and that we consider relevant and labeled as readability...

The mastership dissertation here mentioned had as purpose the study and comprehension of light and how does the light can be worked within the compass of architecture project and how does the light can be as well presented in the manner of to do part and parcel in the construction of the own architectonic object.

Seek the understanding of what is the importance of light in architecture design object properly said, and how can the light be, or not, seen in design process and also to understand how this element can influence the manner of architecturally thinking. In what way has the object supposed through the light and sensorial dimension associated to the previous sketch of the same object. Understand essentially what the light is and what its transforming effect is capable to do in a space, how the great masters of architecture saw the light and how they use them in their architecture project works.

On that basis it was intended to consolidate what has been thought and developed over the practical work carried out in project III discipline (5th year of architecture studies) perceiving more deeply the reality such contemporaneous and which was originated in remote centuries, since architecture is produced and thought with more or less importance and in which has been developing within each architect, consciously or subconsciously, having a considerable importance in their thoughts and manner that architects perceive light in architecture.

During the 3rd year of architectural studies were introduced a challenge, to do in pairs, consisting of a participation in an international competition called “LIVING BOX” where there were limitations to fulfill the outset being the most concerning predominant point the dimensions.

The maximum measurements of the subject to develop should present the same dimensions of a standard freight container so as to develop a portable and easy house to assemble.

Working with Álvaro Santos, we’ve had thinking and decided to make just one unit and not a module because for us it was too clear that the challenge could be more interesting and exciting to solve an limited habitable unit with all the everyday concerning of possible inhabitants’.

Therefore, our container should be retractable and must be equipped with basic facilities. In that sense, the container

should be divided in three areas to retract being these: bath area, living area and sleeping area in a open space logic.

The only thing that as a fixed status is the bathroom, all of the rest is totally retractable. It was also though that the model must not have a kitchen area because of its temporary character assuming the house container as if it were a kind of hostel.

The purpose for this competition was to design a coverture for a particular street in Oporto city. The area to intervene is strongly characterized by the use of tiles as a covering exterior wall.

In this sense, and doing the tile part of the city culture and identity, we started to develop the proposal knowing that we should try to revitalize a lost Oporto image and praising its greatness towards art, society and city.

The coverage should provide an organic configuration establishing reference to art nouveau buildings that constitutes the street facades. For the elaboration of formal and structural aspect for coverage proposal, it was proceeded the stylization of typical tiles to create a dynamic texture and composition, allowing the conception of permeable areas where trees may possibly grow and where day lighting could continue to focus directly on built environment. Where natural light does not fall directly,

the tubular structure was idealized as a complementary element providing indirect light to buildings. With the implementation of a cover on a street where buildings height are varied - both from building to building as from both façade fronts - was thought, based on the study of buildings functionalities, a strategy that encompasses three different heights, where each building heights represents a particular moment as one lives the area. Then the lowest level of the cover proposal corresponds to an area where it is intended for quickly passes only, mean elevation presupposes a controlled experience going beyond of street buildings typologies and finally the highest coverture height intends to reflect slower passages inviting people to stay and enjoy the area.

The intent was to restructure the street way of living, appropriately to existing spaces and where dynamism is consistent and distinctive, causing various sensations, reactions and expressions.

Further to the internship, were developed several projects with different characters.

Under the project Freitas e Fernandes old industry unit was developed studies through ancient photographic documents for that some doubts were dispelled over what originally existed in the built study object.

After the discovery of some leather process tanks, which no one knew exactly where are located, it was carried out the development of a proposal for the rehabilitation of outer space since the interior space was already delivered (under public competition) to an external architecture studio to DGTL.

It was intended on this proposal to maintain and display of all objects of heritage interest, cultural and historic opting instead for the integration of new elements in iron/steel preferably in a grid to permit visual fluidity of these same objects.

According to the intervention policy held by DGTL, the intervention principals follow a reasoning line reflecting that the less noticeable the subsequent intervention will possibly be a better work would be achieved.

Although, these kinds of principles do not invalidate the new unavoidable elements necessary to current needs which would stand out by itself, what it is not wanted here is to hide the concealing actual elements at the expense of historical language to maintain.

Under the scope of RECRIA national project - Special Regime Contribution for Recovery of Rented Properties - several projects taking place on building rehabilitation at the historic centre of Guimarães.

The policy entails rehabilitation of the built heritage with controlled costs and also respecting the whole building construction system characteristic of this area that gave to Guimarães the World Heritage title by UNESCO.

So, in this sense, everything can be recovered or repaired is kept in the building, subject to intervention. The wood, gravel brick and iron are the predominant materials in use as regards this kind of construction.

The craft paints made based on pigments are “queens” in all finishes in an attempt to keep alive the constructive gender and local identity.

On the scope of Leonardo da Vinci internship (at modostudio), I had the great opportunity to live in Italy and to work in a international architecture studio located in Rome.

This internship gaved me the opportunity to work, experience, explore and perspective architecture in various ways broadening my knowledge, developing my creativity and experiencing new professional environments.

The collaboration in this international competition, the development of plastic models, concepts and lines of thought were a constant during the internship as well the meetings, discussions and conversations about the project.

This proposal was developed for the international competition beton hala water front centre located in Belgrade, Serbia and aimed to solve some problems that underlined the local character.

In a city marked by past confrontations, where the environment was previously lived marked by apprehension, rises the need to rebuild Belgrade and solve its amorphous spaces, preparing them to receive new functions and, as consequence, vitalizing the urban fabric.

The proposed program aimed the development of an architectural object considering the creation of a exhibition area, commercial/services areas and catering areas; to solve traffic problems and also gather, somehow one of the city point of interest, located in the top of a small mountain tangent to intervention area; and as well as the integration of new equipment with the existing volume and where la movida takes place.

This proposal reflects the development of preliminary studies for an unfulfilled project. In collaboration with Joana Matos, MSc architect, it was developed a proposal which consisted in redesigning the food court area of a small shopping centre located in Guimarães city centre.

The development studies for the existing area it is characterized by its disorganization, dark and slightly cold causing an amorphous and unappealing space.

The objective was to make this same area a more pleasant place, clear and organized, promoting several spaces with different characters providing dissimilar environments for the meals realization.

In order to restructure the space organization, the pedestrian interior pathway suffered a downgrading from the ceiling quota leaving the eating areas more breathable.

In addition to this it was also proposed the icons redesign displaying all areas.

01render perspective:transition through living area to eating/cooking area.

The current project deals with reorganization and remodelling of an apartment of typology 2 (two bedrooms). Given the dwelling spatial configuration, there were several limitations to designing a new interior space reorganization.

The intervention had some restrictions in relation to a specific area of the apartment where the work to be done only cares for minor repairs.

What was here required by the customer it would contemplate the increasing of existing bedrooms number - 2 units to 3; reformulation of kitchen area and also the development of a new living space.

Collected and perceived the family functional dynamics, it was decided that social area redesign would contemplate an open space logic simultaneously connecting living area with eating/cooking area.

It was necessary to demolish some elements giving rise to glazing panels and permeable panels at specific points in order to create a sort of visual barrier between main entrance and the designated social dwelling space.

In this sense, the progress to dwelling more intimate area does not display a physical barrier, the differentiation from some areas to others is made through the type of material used on the floor in order to avoid dark areas inside without natural light.

SBTool is an international tool for the evaluation of built environment sustainability. In Portugal it was witnessed the adaptability of the same tool considering the national scene creating SBToolPT H directed to buildings.As part of a research grant, it was intended to contribute to its development tool but in another context, directed to sustainable urban planning. In a first research plan approach was necessary to understand how this tool works and its importance in international context and consequently take notice and to proceed to a current legislation analysis. To achieve a successful development of this tool, the parameters study has great importance in order to help sustainable urban regeneration practices and built heritage. Understanding the contributions which the tool might give to urban sustainability in a national context was the initial challenge. It was necessary, through the evaluation of national background; understand what method should be taken to get an adaptation of international reality and applicability to a Portuguese reality. It was also considered as an interest factor to focus the implementation and verification of this knowledge about built heritage and urban regeneration

policies in a case study to designate on further studies.Several papers were produced during the research fellow timing directly related with this topic, highlighting published papers as: “Urban Rehabilitation Towards Sustainability” and “Reabilitação Urbana: Abordando Práticas Sustentáveis” (Urban Rehabilitation: Approaching Sustainable Practices) as well as “Neighbourhood qualities? Strategies in constant development!” that provided the invitation to make a public presentation of the same in Trondheim, Norway. The curiosity in research on urban planning sustainability and building rehabilitation was growing leading, not only me but the whole team involved in project, to search continuously the best references for a more sustainable future. All mental exercise involved with this subject makes me rethink in what could be done if the rehabilitation policies were changed or if or if taking into account small gestures that make incredible differences both economically, environmentally and socially, changing itself society life standards and how those perceive sustainability in short, medium and long term.(RE)Thinking City from general to particular and from particular to general simultaneously!
