Joshua James WiltArchitecture often gets clouded, like many other careers, with fame and money. This leads to extravagant design, often losing functionality and personal expression in the process. Architecture and design comes from a level deep inside one’s mind, personal views and feelings, and expresses one’s ability to portray what they see and feel. Design is not about money or fame, its about doing what you love and sharing it with others. My projects are expressed in a simple manner but with deep meaning. The forms are simple to the eyes, but the level of thought behind the form and function express feeling deeper than design. Connection to community, versatility, and beauty drive my design process. “A GREAT BUILDING, LIKE GREAT LITERATURE OR POETRY OR MUSIC, CAN TELL THE STORY OF THE HUMAN SOUL”–DANIEL LIBESKIND This quote has stuck in my head and drives my design. The expression of my personality and viewpoint through architecture and photography in an attempt to have

the viewer feel what I feel and see what I see

Bird Museum

Erie Metro Park

First YearProfessor Steve LaGrassa

Page 5: Architecture Portfolio

Lake Erie Metro Park is one of the largest migratory paths in North America. Drawing many visitors to the site to watch the flight paths of the birds in late fall. Embracing the spirit of this unique location, the design of the bird museum would correspond with the theme of the sight. Birds migrate often in a V pattern as they fly south for the colder months and the building plan would reflect this and embrace the views.

Enhancing the experience of the visitor, embracing the views, the design creates an experience immersing the visitor into the space. Education through viewing articles and views migratory paths through the curtain walls. An auditorium for large groups to enhance the experience of the visit and for further education. The building brings the visitors in and guides them through to creating a learning experience that is simple and fun.

ADAPTIVE REUSE

Pilgrim Baptist Church, Chicago Crematorium

Second YearProfessor Tom Roberts

Page 9: Architecture Portfolio

Located just outside of downtown Chicago, the pilgrim Baptist church burnt down and all that remained was the outer shell. Using the framework that remained, designed a crematorium and a community funeral space. Creating a relationship between the church and the community. Tying in the interior and exterior space to invite in the community not for services only but open for reflection and prayer.

Page 10: Architecture Portfolio

Creating a space within a space. The form and function of the existing church and the new function of a crematorium. A gathering space for reflection of the deceased and connection of sprit. Using light to soften of the space and regain the feeling of the existing church, stained glass in the wall brings a mood and energy for reflection.

an existing structure of a billboard. adapting building function and form to the framework of the steel. Located on Woodward just north of 6 mile, the location is crucial for neighborhood and community gathering space along with function for a graphic designer

Page 14: Architecture Portfolio

Combining a work space with public activity. Located on the first floor, a community library revolving around the world of art and graphic design. The second and third floor are private for the designer. A studio space, office, and a meeting room. A design wall extending from the studio to the ground ties both the designer and the community together as a whole inviting in community to exhibit work along with the designer themselves.

Detroit Mayoral Archive Explorations of folding

Third YearProfessor Tony Martinico

Page 17: Architecture Portfolio

Examining the concept of site folding on site. The building as a whole folding on its self. Creating space unique to the history of the site and folding on the past. Slits of light representing holes in the past, cuts and folding on the circulation of the past. Creating a sense of past history collapsing on the present and intertwine the past and present. Folding of memory, forming a barrier from escape, keeping in moments in time, forming a wall to peer through to the memories. Folding in onto the memory box steaming through the barrier.

Site folding on itself forming barrier walls, incasing the site, folding in on itself

Memory of what once existed, cut and scared onto the suface of the building. Guiding form through the folding of the site upon itself, conveying information through maps engraved on the floor, walls, and ceilings, guiding direction. A grand entrance folding onto the visitors, enveloping and welcoming. Memory tracing the history of Detroit.

School for graffiti

Third YearProfessor Jan Mazur

Page 21: Architecture Portfolio

Studying the circulation through the site, embracing the existing paths and bringing in the community. Forming a space to optimize use both within the program and with the exterior facades. Incorporation program to be used both with the site and with the building. Bringing in the outside world of graffiti and extracting the inside world of graffiti.

Function and form representing the common text styles, optimizing canvas space both within the school and outside of the school. Bridges connecting the space, displaying art, and tying in program into a common space. Color representing both the emotion of the space and the beauty of graffiti.

Chapel Design

Fourth YearProfessor Joe Odoerfer

Materiality tying in the relationship between common design among the campus and a more modern building. Creating a sense of unity between the existing buildings and the new chapel. A modern heavy feeling, concrete and steel, a warm and comforting feeling with the use of different woods and warms accent lighting.

Explorations in photography in an attempt to express texture, lighting, and color. Incorporating architecture in a series of different methods, expressing form and texture. Expressing personal views on the way architecture is seen through the eye of a lens and a critique on the experience of space seen in a different way than the common eye would see.

Paintings using color to express shape, depth, and void space. Using the color to express the architec-tural high points and draw attention to detail.

Renderings of Le Corbusier chair and a table design done to express the simplistic form and function of the chair and versatility of a coffee table. The rendering express the color, materiality, and form of the chairs and express the emotion and feeling of the space with the furniture.
