This portfolio is a compilation of my work as a student in the Department of Renovation and

Re-establishment of Buildings at the TechnologicalEducational Institute of Patras,Greece between 2005 and 2010 and as a professional. Brief overviews of 6

projects from my undergraduate studies and myprofessional career are included within. Those

projects represent my understanding of culturalperception, the design of forms and structures, my perspective in renovation and architecture and my

interior design ideas as i had the opportunity to work in the field of architectural design. The language used to

express my ideas includes drawings, sketches, renderings and physical models. The

cooperation with fellow students was essential in order to design some of the projects.

Modern Office The concept of the project was to design on atheoretical basis a floor of offices for a company. The working environment should be ergonomic and pleasant for employees. At the same time it should be attractive and non-complex for visitors. The separation of functions and movement in the space is achieved by the four different colored corridors -red, yellow, blue and green- which create an Hippodameian separation. Each corridor based on its color can lead only to work desks that have the same color. Each color could indicate a different department of the company.

This elementary school was designed on a real site seated at the centre of the city of Patras. Thus, the specifications were severe. This project was my first major designing assignment. My team and I had to deal withunfamiliar problems. Except being functional all requested facilities had to occupy a specific area. Also, a pre-existing neoclassical listed building had to be included in thedesigning concept. The final proposal included schoolfacilities, a restaurant, an events hall, a sports hall, a computer room and a library. The sun orbit was taken into account in order to achieve the best buildings’ orientation.

Studying at the Department of renovation and re-establishment of buildings ment that in the seventh semester we had towork on major projects of restoring old, historical buildings, most of thetimes abandoned and in bad condition. The goal of this project was the restoration and renovation of a neoclassical listed building which was abandoned and neglected from his previous ownersafter a catastrophic fire in 1983. More than 50% of the building was severely destroyed and since then it has been used for various puproses. During the last couple of years only the well preserved groundfloor was used as a store.

The idea to be transformed into a spa centre had many hidden difficulties as we had to preserve only the outer walls. All the rest of the walls, as well as the new floor were designed and projected according to the new static condition of the stone building. In order to support the new floors we designed a new grid of steel beams and columns inside the old weakened outer stone walls.

The outer morphology of the building waspreserved as it is imposed by law,but in contrast theinside was changed dramatically and as a result anold aristocratic house was transformed to a modernspa centre with facilities of jacuzzi, sauna, steambath, face and body care as also all the neccesarysupporting facilities.

The subject of this project is a building-symbol for the city of Patras. The paper factory of “Ladopoulos” was a building of great importance in the recent history of the city. It opereted from 1928 to 1992 occupying thousands of workers and for this period it was the largest paper factory in the Balcanic countries. Unfortunately, financial and political difficulties led to its closure and abandonment.

Due to its famous history the abandoned building was and still is a source of inspiration and a place of expression for many artists such as photographers and painters. This is the main reason why my team and i chose this place to betransformed in a gallery and excibition space for various kinds of art.

After extended discussion and consideration we decided to work only on a certain sector of the factory due to its massive size and complicated structure. Reinforced concrete was used for the construction of the old factory. The neglected sceleton had severe damages mainly from the long exposure to humidity, sea water and vegetation which had literally “swallowed” the building.

According to our design the new morphology of the building will be substantially different from the old grayscale one, with in-tense colours and specially shaped doors and windows as the most striking features. The new character of the building can establish it as a new progressive and alternative excibition centre and add a bit of glamour in the underexposed coastal part of the city.

The purpose of my thesis was to create a cultural centre based upon the art of theatre. The site which was chosen isnearby the new port of Patras. Me and my fellow student wanted to design an innovative building in order to typify the new port as also the town itself. The idea of a ship-shaped building which will be oriented towards the new port was the final decision. Despite the fact that the outward appearance was important, the design of the structure was made from inside to outside in order to provide the best comforts.

The theatre was designed in order to achieve the acoustical and visual characteristics we were seeking. In other words, weaccomplished mathematical and acoustic research for the shape of the hall. The 680 seats auditorium was designed in a standard of the ancient Greek theatres. This means that the seats have a semi-circular configuration because in this way every viewer has the closest distance from the scene and can observe and hear the per-formance in the best possible way. In addition the shape and height of the scene are adjusted to allow to all viewers, even those who are sitting in the first row, to observe the actors from head to toe.

Except the theatre, the exhibition space also occupies significant area of the building. The interior design of this part is completely different from the modern style of the entire building as its style is Greek traditional.

By doing this, we want to create an imitation of the streets of Patras and give the visitors the impression that are having a walk on the centre of the town instead of a modern building. Some other facilities of the building are the cafeteria, the library which has special room for video projections and a theatrical costumes’ exhibition space.

The surrounding area was designed to be environmental friendly and sustainable. The parking area was designed to be on the back and at a lower level of the entire surrounding area. We chose this solution in order to “hide” the inelegant picture of parked cars. Moreover, the planted trees on this area will help to keep this space cooler, especially when it’s neededduring the summer.

The access to the parking will be through undergroundtunnels in order to design a surrounding area withoutsacrificing any space for roads. The entire surrounding area will be transformed into a green park, which everyone canaccess through small walk paths.

The sun’s orbit influences the design of the building as wells as its orientation. We tried through the design to take advantage of the bright sun light of Greece and provide a special illumination of our building during the day. Of course, we did not want the presence of the sun light in the entire building so we tried to let it in only to specific parts of it.

It’s worth mentioning that this project and the project of the alternative exhibition space are exactly in the same area. This means that, my team and I have provided a general proposal for this degraded area having as a background the construction of the new port of Patras.

Modern Apartment The internal layout and partition as well as the interior design of a 110m2 apartment was my first project as a professional. My family, who are the owners of the apartment, had instructed me to start the project in order to create 2 similar apartments of 55m2 each. One of the newly created apartments would be for my personal use, so it was like planning my new house.

Modern Apartment Although at first glance the project seemed easy, it had hidden difficulties as I had to create two apartments whichwill have exactly the same area. More specifically, theproblem occurred in the division of windows and doors as I didn’t have the allowance to change their position. The work is in progress and according to the timetable the two new apartments will be ready for use this summer.
