Growing Community is a proposal to revamp the desolate Bewicke Park located in North Vancouver to become a fully functioning community garden.

It is designed to function as an accessible and diverse garden space for a variety of people, especially in lieu of the burgeoning population near Lonsdale Quay. The amenities include a wide variety of garden plot sizes, all of which are wheelchair friendly as well as an open lawn and beach area.

The goal of the project was to bring the community together intimately and to share the extraordinary beauty of grown food.

The project has been recently pitched to the City of North Vancouver as an actual proposal for this parkspace.

ThE FALSE CREEk PROJECTThe False Creek Project was an indepth analysis of the seawall section from Granville Island to Olympic Village and to the Plaza of Nations on the north side.

This project involved intense collaborative group work. The six of us on this project spent many days doing site visits, research and design.

My role in this project was to create this particular map of the natural factors, the Alder Bay spread. I was also the project manager and editor and finalized all the graphics to make it look cohesive.

The full project can be viewed at http://issuu.com/arimao/docs/falsecreek.

ThE hASTINGS MILL PROJECT - OASIS PARkThe Hastings Mill Project was a proposal to revitalize a historic piece of architecture located on the shoreline of West Point Grey. The Hastings Mill, the oldest building in Vancouver, is currently a small volunteer based museum situated in an open park.

The project revitalizes the open space and creates areas dedicated to celebrating the glorious view and the highlighting both the cultural and natural heritage of the site.

My role in this project was to to be a team leader under tight deadlines and to create a coherent layout for presentation. I was also responsible for the vignettes (perspectival pictures) and the main diagram.

ASSEMBLAGE MODULESThe assemblage modules were designed with the intent to

create objects that can link and stack in many different possible combinations. When linked and stacked, they can then be oriented in different patterns such that despite the consistency of materiality, it is recognizably different.

Objects, for the most part, are created for use and consumption. What I am interested in how much the intent of use of any object is actually incorporated into daily life. What gets modi-ied? What gets kept? Why? More importantly, how does this affect patterns of behaviour?

INTRODUCTIONHistory Goals Research

We were really interested in the environmental friendliness of the cardboard chair. We wanted to reuse a unwanted material and explore all the possibilities that cardboard can offer in terms of a chair.

We set a few parameters to guide ourselves along in this project.

1. Comfort - we noticed that a major law with most designs of cardboard chairs is that they are quite uncomfortable. We theorize that is is due to the planar nature of cardboard and that to accomodate for the curves of the human body would mean compromising the structural integrity of the corrugations in the cardboard.

2. Structurally stable - we thought this was particularly important because we wanted the chair to be stable in the long term. We thought that the most environmentally friendly chair is a chair that gets used and can last for a long time.

3. Use as little cardboard as possible - this was a challenge in reduction. When thinking of recycling materials, there’s the three mandates of the three R’s - reuse, recycle and reduce. We thought it would be best to try to go for all three. We also tried to use cardboard that has already been bent, as cardboard chairs typically are made from “clean” cardboard.

Our research really tried to address three main areas. We examined different methods of constructing a cardboard chair. We wanted to research structural integrity of construction, so we looked into material properties and examined precedents for which we thought were particularly relevant. Most importantly, we researched ergonomics of chairs and found a vast resource pool on the subject. We tried to incorporate this information to make a chair that is both comfortable and reduces long term strain.

The cardboard chair, now an ubiquitously designed object, was probably sparked in the 1972 by Frank Gehry with his collection of cardboard furniture called “Easy Edges”. His designs were wildly successful and have been featured in London’s Design Museum and has spawned new innovation in cheap, economical and environmentally friendly furniture using cardboard.

CONSTRUCTEDConstructed was a two person collaborative exploring the many functions and guises of the simple cardboard material.

We looked into various precedents and set forth goals for ergonomics and material economy and comfort. All in all, constructed was a rousing success, producing a highly functional chair that was studry and reused materials effectively.

My role in this collaborative was to piece together the predent pieces and compile the materials study. I was also responsible for creating the graphic elements and putting together a cohesive book.

The entire project can be viewed at http://issuu.com/arimao/docs/chairdocument.

ThE UNDEFINED POTENTIALArchitecture is a language of space all unto itself.

For a studio project, we were assigned architectural terms and created graphical images providing the definition and clarity to the understanding of each word.

Interstitial is the place inbetween, the gap, the potential, the space.

5Th ANNUAL SPARkLEThe 5th Annual Sparkle is a fundraising charity event for the Starlight Children’s Foundation of Canada. The charity is dedicated to transforming hospital experiences and creating positive experiences full of hope and light.

My job for the Sparkle Charity Fundraiser was to create all the necessary graphic designs and layouts for the event.

GREENHOUSEFENCEengineeringcontest

GREEN hOUSE FENCEI am currently the graphics producer for the Green House Fence project. The project aims to revitalize the oft neglected fence and transform it into a fully functioning greenhouse.

I have created the layout for a design for an engineering contest, now defunct, and will be in the process of revamping the website.
