THE CITY AND THE REGION OF ÉVORAÉvora’s district occupies a total area of 7400 Km2 and it is the second largest district extension of the country. Évora is the capital of the Province of Alto Alentejo and this municipality is responsible for the occupation of nearly 20% of the total area. Named "Liberalitas Julia" by the Romans it keeps within its walls a rare example, in the whole Peninsula , of a pagan temple. In 1165, Giraldo Sem Pavor , a Christian knight, conquered it from the Moors under the rule of the first king of Portugal , D. Afonso Henriques. Due to its geographical positioning, Évora was invested with a major role in the History of Portugal, having become not only the court’s centre stage, but also a most important centre of culture. Nowadays it still keeps a vast number of monuments which are representative of the different artistic expressions of times past, namely the Roman and the Michaelangelo’s styles, as well as the Mudéjar decorative art - characteristic of southern Spain . Its numerous churches are decorated sumptuously, in carved gilt-wood, mural paintings, panels of baroque tiles and built-in marble. The amount and quality of its architecture makes it one of the most prominent cities in Portugal and in the whole Peninsula . Considered as one of the great historical cities in the world, it was recognised as such by UNESCO, in 1986, when it was officially declared a WORLD HERITAGE CITY .

THE UNIVERSITY OF ÉVORAThe University of Évora , founded in 1559, is the second oldest in Portugal (after Coimbra , in 1537). It was officially inaugurated on the 1st November 1559. Évora was at the time, the second most important city in Portugal.

Being implanted in an agricultural region of great architectonic riches and ornamental rocks, and located both near some centres of advanced technology and urban and industrial centres, the University has a privileged situation for the teaching of the offered courses.

The University is one of the largest employment institutions of the South and is a vital economic agent for the city.

Covering a large range of humanist, scientific, technological and artistic options, divided into 39 undergraduate degrees, several masters’ degrees and post-graduate studies, the University of Évora offers a qualified teaching assured by six hundred teachers, half of them holding a PhD.

The University Campus is spread all over town, mingling with it. It is composed by a set of buildings of great patrimonial value testifying different historical periods. Besides Évora, the University Branches are extended along the Alentejo’s region through the Experimental Farms, the House of Monsaraz and others.
