Director’s Annual Report 2011/2012
!anks to generous gifts by David Fan, Hung Fan, Vicky Black and Frances MacDonald, we have nearly completed the construction and furnishing of the Manya Fan Art Education Center. !eir gifts will allow us to increase student capacity by over 25% and provide upgraded access and security for studio art classes. Our exhibition season began with a national invitational exhibition, titled Making it in Crafts, coordinated by Jim Sondgeroth. Under the Oaks on the 8th Fairway,
on September 9, was a very successful fundraising event at the homes of the Moulton’s, the Sputh’s and the Brand’s. On September 30, we opened Sister Ru"nia and her Students, with nearly 50 works loaned by friends of the Art Museum. At the same time, in the McDonald Gallery we exhibited favorite works from our Permanent Collection, selected by twenty-two community leaders in !e Community Curates. Partnering with WBAA on a tour to Southern Indiana Treasures, we treated 24 travelers to Architectural and Art surprises in Columbus, Nashville and Bloomington November 4, and 5. On December 14 we held a private champagne event to meet the “Curators” of the Community Curates exhibit for our members and donors who gave $250 or more during the year.January kicked o# with an outstanding collection of Indiana Regionalist works loaned by Bob and Ellie Haan titled Indiana Realities and in the McDonald Gallery, we exhibited objects from the collection of the Purdue University Black Cultural Center in Trading Spaces. Several works from our collection, created by African American artists, were simultaneously displayed at the BCC. On February 10 the 4th annual Heart of Art wine tasting event, held at the Lafayette Country Club, was sold out and raised a record net income of over $51,000 in support of Art Museum programs. In addition, bidders donated $3,800 to kick o# our campaign to create an Education Endowment at the Community Foundation, with their 25% gift-matching program.March 31 brought the Art League’s major fundraiser, Celebration of Color luncheon and style show, to the Best Western, thanks to co-chairs Inge Maresh and Stephanie Funcheon. Opened in May, two exhibits brought in many new visitors. Chair-ity: Wild and Crazy Chairs included 102 chairs artistically altered by members of the community and donated to the Art Museum for sponsorship or sale. !e Brown County Art Guild: Juried Exhibition connected our museum with several other regions in the state of Indiana as well.!e McAllister Foundation generously granted $12,500 for continuing improvements to our ArtSmart: Indiana website. !anks to SIA Foundation for funding a 10-iPad mobile learning lab for use at our community partner Oakland High School and to Target for a $2,000 grant. With the leadership of Sue Carr, thirty-nine volunteer art instructors teach weekly OHS art classes, for which the students would not otherwise have the opportunity. Sue and Kendall gave presentations about our museum’s art education programs to "ve local service organizations. Our "nal event was the June 24 Chair Fair, which celebrated the beginning of Chair-ity, our summer public art exhibition and fund raising program led by Elizabeth Lockrey. I want to thank all of you who so generously contribute your time, talent and funds to make the Art Museum a key ingredient in our “Community of Choice.”

President’s Annual Report 2011/2012 Our Board members worked well with each other and with our capable sta# to make 2011 – 2012 a very positive and productive year. !e year was "lled with great exhibitions at the Museum, outstanding events, and expansion of our facilities with the Manya Fan Art Education Center made possible by the generous gifts from the Manya Fan family. We recognize that we are a membership organization and that we must continue to develop ways to attract new members and sustain our current membership levels in order to remain vibrant.
“Under !e Oaks” in September of 2011 was a tremendous success thanks to the creativity and hard work of the committee and our volunteers. !e Heart of Art Dinner and Auction raised substantially more revenue than in previous years. Dinners at Westwood hosted by Purdue President France Cordova as well as other unique auction items sparked enthusiastic bidding. Our sponsors for the Heart of Art and the planning committee did a great job in making this event very successful.
Our "nal event of the "scal year ending June 30th was “Chair-ity” which featured all shapes and sizes of chairs created and painted by local artists, including art students. !e chairs were sponsored by various patrons. Chair-ity was a "nancial success and brought many new faces to the Museum. !ank you to the Committee for this unique and well-planned exhibit.
Our support of the high school art curriculum at Oakland School was a successful venture that positively impacted many students who might not otherwise have exposure to art. Additionally, the variety of classes o#ered by our Museum, our talented faculty members, and the hours given by volunteers in the area of education and otherwise continue to make our Museum thrive.
In conjunction with WBAA, our Museum sponsored a two-day Southern Indiana Treasures trip in early November featuring the Miller House in Columbus, an architectural tour of Columbus, a visit to the T. C. Steele home near Nashville, a visit to the Brown County Art Guild, and a memorable private tour and tasting dinner at the Upland Brewery in Bloomington.
AMGL participated in the Community Foundation Matching Funds Grant Program created in 2011. !e monies raised are matched up to twenty "ve percent (25%) by the Greater Lafayette Community Foundation through 2013 and will be used to support art education through the Manya Fan Art Education Center. !e AMGL Board of Directors appreciates the support and contributions of our Foundation Board. !e Art League’s enthusiastic support of our Museum is also key to our continued success.
In summary, our sponsors, members, faculty, board members, volunteers and sta# have made our Museum a vibrant success story for 2011 – 2012.

Education Report2011-2012 met with unprecedented cohesiveness of the education committee, faculty and the guilds as we anticipated the generous gift of the Fan family for the Manya Fan Art Education Center. In advance of the mid February renovation start date, wish lists were made, supplies were sorted and stored and the area was cleared in anticipation of our new space, which allowed for better implementation of the education components of the mission of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. As a group we continue to think of better ways to use the space and work together in our glorious new Manya Fan Art Education Center.
Education Committee-Members are Jane Boswell, Sue Carr, Meg Ellis, Carol Purdy, Cheryl Rosenthal, Renee !omas, Kathy Trout and Linda Vanderkolk.
Faculty- Lorie Amick, Elizabeth Beeson, Jane and Je# Boswell, Ron Burgess, Cindy Krulitz, Jennifer Reitmeyer, Bridget Santon, Judy Titche, and James Werner. !is group adapted well to a new “Policies and Procedures Handbook” compiled by Jane Boswell, inspired more advertising and created a “Sampler Class” 8 weeks with 8 instructors and 8 media.
Guilds- Tuesday Painters, led by Robert Lempke, the Fabric Guild led by Helen Radavich and a Figurative Guild led by Susan Doster.
Oakland High School collaboration: Sue Carr continues as volunteer Art Educator/Liaison with LSC’s new Oakland High School for the purpose of providing art experiences for the newly conceived school. 80 students and 38 volunteers were involved during the 2011-2012 school year. She is working with the school faculty, Education Committee members, volunteer art teachers and artists to make art an integral part of science, mathematics, and the humanities programs at Oakland. Five students were enrolled in Art for credit classes during the 2011-2012 school year. Tours of AMGL Exhibitions were planned for all students. As part of our Community Partnership, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette also uses the OHS art classrooms for museum studio classes. !e studio is equipped by the generosity of many community groups and businesses. In addition, seven “StudiOHS” were held during the school year for all students, funded by a grant from Target Corporation. A second Target grant will provide for "ve “StudiOHS” beginning in the fall of 2012. Scheduled tours included many adult groups from Purdue; Westminster, Kiwanis, schools (preschoolers, home-schoolers, parochial, and public). Most tour groups participated in related activities in the studios as well as the exhibits in the galleries, all planned by Meg Ellis and Cheryl Rosenthal. A large group of visitors enjoyed “chair-ity” and activities on the lawn between the Art Museum and TCHA after the Box parade on June 30.
Workshops and lectures David Slonim presented a 3-day Plein Air Workshop in September of 2011. !e winter season was "lled with interesting gallery talks starting with Bob and Ellie Haan on the Indiana Realities: Regionalist Paintings Exhibit. Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Foundation Board Members 2011-2012
President: Sarah Schwarz
Directors:
Our Mission: !e Foundation exists to provide "nancial support to the art Museum of Greater Lafayette. To that end, the Foundation has received and acquired assets for the bene"t of the Art Museum. Moreover, the Foundation manages and invests the assets for preservation, growth and income for the Museum.
Celebrating 30 years, the Foundation, established in 1982, helps provide assurance for the future in supporting the local arts. In 2011-2012 the Foundation was able to provide $30,900 in unrestricted funds for the operation of the Art Museum and this year we are able to provide $37,33 for 2012-2013, a 21% increase over the prior year due to increased funds in the Foundation and investment performance. Our goal is to maximize the long-term "nancial support of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette.
With the community support through membership, gifts or bequests, the Foundation is able to help perpetuate the Museum and its many exhibitions, acquisitions, educational programs and community outreach.
!anks to the Foundation Board members for their "nancial support, active leadership and participation in the museum fundraising, friend raising and special events.

Art League Report
!e Art League continued its tradition of providing social and educational opportunities for members through monthly meetings. Programs focused on the current gallery exhibits with speakers who were involved with a particular exhibit. Sheri Helmkamp, Jim and Ruthie Shook, Ron Burgess, !erese Lynch, Bob and Ellie Haan provided a personal touch to their informative talks. A past recipient of the Art League AEAI Scholarship, Ying Larimore, spoke about the art classes she teaches at Battle Ground Middle School. And for a second year, our February meeting was “Books and Bagels”. Local author, Nancy Patchen, moderated a discussion of Ernest Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast”. A long time tradition of alternating hosting a meeting with the Symphony Guild continued. !is year the Art League was treated to a performance of winners of the Symphony’s Keller Competition.
Members from the Art League viewed the wonderful works of art displayed during the “Making it in Crafts” exhibition held at the Art Museum. Members and our liaison to the museum collection committee, Sheri Helmkamp, were particularly impressed with a glass sculpture, “10467A.C. Fused glass” by Jon M. Wolfe. !e Art League elected to purchase this sculpture as a gift donation to the Art Museum’s permanent collection. Members were then pleased to have Jon Wolfe and his wife, Karen, accept an invitation to attend the May luncheon/annual meeting. Jon provided a very interesting power point presentation about his history as an artist and his role as the Director of the Hot Glass Studio at Kokomo Opalescent Glass.
If you’ve attended one of the receptions celebrating an opening of exhibits in the galleries of the Art Museum, you know they are a great opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones. But did you know that all the drinks and refreshments are provided by the Art League? You may have noticed Art League members serving and keeping the table replenished. !anks again to Shirley Bosler who, year after year, has organized these receptions.
Of course, scholarships, acquisitions and museum receptions would not be possible without the e#orts of members who tirelessly work on two traditional fundraisers. !e November “Bling on a Budget” sale was again expertly chaired by Mary Ann Fenn and Kay Mithoefer. !e always-successful spring Fashion Show and Luncheon, “Celebration of Color”, was again held at the Best Western Lafayette Hotel Executive Plaza and Conference Center. Our very creative co-chairs Inge Maresh and Stephanie Funcheon brought new twists to this annual event, with proceeds higher than ever before. Plans are in motion for the 2013 Fashion Show and Luncheon to be held on Saturday, April 6.
!is year all Art League members are also members of the Art Museum. Together, we continue to move forward in fostering art and artists in our community.

Works from students who took art classes from her were also in the exhibit. Five of Sister Ru#nia’s paintings are in the Art Museum’s Permanent Collection, including the oil: “The Old Carpenter”, which was exhibited in this show.
Sister Mary Ru#nia was a Catholic nun who was a nurse at St. Elizabeth hospital. Crippled too severely in an accident to continue nursing, she studied art at several institutions and became involved as an artist and art teacher. In 1930 she opened a studio at St. Francis High School near the hospital and taught watercolor, pot-tery and sculpture. Many of her students are practicing artists today. She passed away in 1959.

The galleries were #lled with outstanding works of Regionalist Paintings from the Haan collection curated by Rachel Perry, recently retired Curator of Cultural History at the Indiana State Museum.
What is Regionalist art? She explains, “Between the World Wars, the United States assumed isolationist tendencies, creating an appreciation for uniquely American culture. Artists began to view the “American Scene” from a new prespective, documenting the land and cities as they saw them. The Regionalist movement re$ected an increased interest in realistic painting and an inclination for artists to document their experiences of, and for their nostalgic, political and aesthetic appeal”
This #rst major exhibition of Indiana’s Regionalist art, which measures favorably with any other state in the nation, featured a long neglected group of artists whose work deserves attention. Consisting of 37 original paintings, the exhibition showcased the best of Indiana Regionalist’s works, including artists Edmund Brucker, Grant Christian, Harry Davis, E. Roger Frey, Cecil Head, Floyd Hopper and William F. Kaeser.
