WHAT IS AN ARTICULATION AGREEMENT?

• It is a binding agreement between a two year and a four year institution.

• It defines which courses will be transferable and what letter grades must be earned for transfer.

• It ensures that the student understands which courses are aligned with their intended four year degree so they don’t take classes that will not satisfy their bachelor degree requirements.

Page 3: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WHAT ELSE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN AN ARTICULATION AGREEMENT?• Information to ensure appropriate

advisement of students by faculty at both the 2yr and 4 yr institution

• Coordination and review of curriculum by faculty and advisors at both institutions & at statewide meetings

• Evaluation of the outcomes of the articulation program and continuous improvement (report to Council of Presidents)

• Application process and fees

• Transfer criteria

• Admissions process

• Maximum number of transferable college credits

Page 5: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Page 6: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WHAT IS NEW JERSEY’S CURRENT MODEL?• The articulation between two year

community colleges and NJ public four year colleges and universities allows transfer of academic credits earned in an A.A. or A.S. degree to a bachelor’s degree program

• 56-64 credits will transfer (general education 45/30)

• The articulation does not guarantee admission as many majors have a competitive admission process

• The A.A.S. degree is not covered (with one exception, the A.A.S. in Technical Studies, NJ Pathways Leading to a College Education)

Page 9: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

ONE FORMER MODEL

Bergen Community College and Montclair State College (University)

• In the early 1980s, BCC and MSC had an articulation agreement for A.A.S. degrees in Health Professions to transfer towards a B.S.

• Graduates would transfer ~ 68 credits and start at the junior year, needing 128 credits to graduate

Page 10: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WHAT DOES THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN KEAN UNIVERSITY AND BERGEN CC LOOK LIKE?• This partnership in nursing permits BCC

students with an A.A.S. degree to have advanced standing at Kean leading to a BSN

• Up to 88 credits can be taken at Bergen (Lyndhurst and Paramus campuses)

• The remaining 37 are taken at Kean (125 required for BSN)

• Completion program can take either 12 months full time or 2-4 years part time

Page 11: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

KEAN UNIVERSITY AND BERGEN COMMUNITY• Program is set up for both current

students in the A.A.S. nursing program at Bergen and for graduates who have their RN and wish to obtain their BSN

• Pre licensure students need approval from the director of the nursing program at Bergen and are considered visiting students at Kean (not matriculated)

Page 12: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

KEAN UNIVERSITY AND BERGEN COMMUNITY• These students will go through the

approval process each semester until they graduate with an A.A.S. and then officially apply to Kean for the RN-BS program

• Passing the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is also required

• Admission requires a minimum 2.0 GPA and a “C” or better for transfer of courses

What could an articulation agreement for a dental hygiene program look like between a two year and a four year college/university?

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE BSDH IN NJ?• An entry level BSDH program is

planned with Rutgers for 2015• The current degree completion

program is scheduled to continue with Rutgers

Page 26: ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS DEBORAH A. COOK, RDH, MAED, BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WHAT ISSUES DO WE NEED TO ADDRESS FOR THE FUTURE?• Will the current educational

programs be appropriate for the possible providers types that may be developed?

• Do we need to investigate articulation agreements with other states or can the current educational offerings in our state(s) meet these needs?

• Do we need to create a program to educate the ADHP or similar provider?
