The rapid ascent of the Lindsey Smith-trained Trap For Fools (Poet’s Voice) continued unabated at Ascot yesterday as the admirable

four-year-old made all the running to land the A.T.A. Stakes (Listed, 2200m) to set up a potential shot at a first Group prize on Saturday.

Success in the $100,000 feature was the gelding’s third consecutive victory at stakes level and his eighth win from 11 starts this preparation, and he got the job done in typically tenacious fashion from the front.

He briefly looked vulnerable inside the final 200 metres as both Dark Alert (Testa Rossa) and Not Again Ken (Courvoisier) delivered strong challenges on either flank, but he lifted in the closing stages to win by a neck and three quarters of a length respectively under Alan Kennedy.

The Grant and Alan Williams-trained Royal Star (Redoute’s Choice) was sent off the $2 favourite but her effort flattened out in the straight and she eventually came home a well-held fifth of eight runners.

Casuarina-based Smith was delighted with the attitude displayed by Trap For Fools, who began the season rated 63 and won yesterday off a rating of 94, and he said he admired the horse’s determination in the heat of battle.

“It’s a good asset to have in a horse. They got a little bit close to him in the end but he won,” Smith said.

“It got a little bit scary in the end, but I looked over and saw the favourite was struggling a little bit and I know this horse just keeps giving.

“I’m quite shallow, so when they keep winning they become my favourite! I admire horses who run like this, they are a sitting shot for all horses and they keep giving.”

Winning rider Kennedy, who was riding Trap For Fools for the first time, was similarly impressed with his mount and said he felt confident when the horse was challenged in the straight.

“I was pretty confident he would come to the races and do his job today, I just had to keep him out of trouble and make sure I didn’t let him slouch too much,” Kennedy said.

“I asked for a bit more, he put his ears back and dug deep.”The four-year-old son of former Darley shuttler Poet’s Voice (Dubawi)

will now head for a couple of days at the coast, and provided he pulls up well is likely to back-up on Saturday in the $400,000 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Ascot.

“As is stands today, yes. He has been up a long time, he can now spend a couple of days down at the beach, and Friday afternoon if he is happy, the vet checks him and makes sure he is okay then (he will run),” Smith said.

“His heart rate is amazing, he has a lot of depth to him.” Trap For Fools (4 g Poet’s Voice - Old Money by Old Spice) has now

won ten of his 21 starts, three of them at stakes level, and $340,280 in prize money after yesterday’s Listed success at Ascot.

He is one of five foals out of the 2000 WATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Old Money (Old Spice) who is herself a sister to the dual Group Two-winning gelding Old Cobbler and a half-sister to the stakes-placed dam of multiple Listed winner Moonlight Bay (Catbird).

His placed second dam Balmy Night (Balmerino) produced six winners from seven foals to race and is a sister to 1988 Perth Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Linc The Leopard.

She is also a sister to the winning mare Belmont Miss, who went on to produce Group Three winner Sportsbeat (Al Khawaaneeg), while this is also the same family as Listed winner Queenza (King Of Kings).

Trap For Fools sire Poet’s Voice shuttled to Darley Kelvinside in the Hunter Valley for five seasons between 2012 and 2016, covering 504 mares during that time.

Poet’s Voice has sired 11 stakes winners to date, including the 2017 Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Viridine, and he will stand the upcoming Northern Hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £6,000 at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket

Gee Gees Top Notch lands Tasmanian StakesThe talented Gee Gees Top Notch (5 m Wordsmith - Himstedt by Danehill Dancer) registered her second career stakes success yesterday when bravely winning the Tasmanian Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Launceston. The Leon, Dean and Trent Wells-trained mare showed a good attitude to defeat her owner mate Geegees Goldengirl by a neck to provide their sire Wordsmith (Testa Rossa) with a Listed exacta. The Scott Brunton-trained odds-on favourite Hellova Street (Helike) was a length further behind in third place. Gee Gees Top Notch is one of four stakes winner for Tasmania-based stallion Wordsmith.

Litt attempting to hold off Waller’s numbersTrainer Richard Litt will attempt to stretch the winning streak of Chris Waller castoff Ashkannd (Sinndar) to three when the seven-year-old tackles a 2100 metres race at Warwick Farm on Saturday. The European import has won his past two starts for Litt and is one of ten horses accepted for the 2110 metres race, six of whom are trained by Waller. Litt said a change of environment and tactics with Ashkannd had led to the gelding’s turnaround in form. "Chris spent a lot of time trying to slow him down in his races. We tried that too and then gave up," Litt said. "We let him run as quick as he wants to go. That seems to be the turnaround for him. He can do what he likes."

Charge accepts for Warwick FarmTwo-year-old colt Charge (Zoustar), who is accepted for today’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m), is one of nine juveniles in a $100,000 race over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm on Saturday. Blake Shinn has been booked to ride Charge, who

ran third over 1100 metres at his first start at Rosehill on 9 December, at Warwick Farm where the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Sokudo (Not A Single Doubt) is also slated to resume. Sokudo, who ran third in a Randwick barrier trial on 11 December over 742 metres, was unplaced in the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) at his first start on 30 September. Click here to view Saturday’s Warwick Farm acceptances.

Bel Burgess out to continue winning formTrainer Michael Roebuck will be hoping Bel Burgess (Bel Esprit) can continue his good form when he takes his chance in a Benchmark 84 (1500m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding, who was most recently seen winning the Wodonga Gold Cup (1590m) on 24 November, is set to carry top weight of 60 kilograms on Saturday and he will race from barrier six with apprentice Ethan Brown to take the ride. "He's carried between 58.5 (kilograms) and 60.5 and won in lesser grade," Roebuck said. "He carries weight so that shouldn't be too much of a concern. He can sit up on the pace and give a good kick and I think he'll give this a good shot." Click here to view Saturday’s Moonee Valley acceptances.

All Too Huiying adapts to Gold CoastTalented colt All Too Huiying (All Too Hard) will tune up for his run in the Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) on 13 January when he takes his chance in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1800m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday. The Gary Moore-trained three-year-old colt has not been seen since he won the Seppelt Wines Stakes (registered as Batman Stakes) (Listed, 1800m) on the 9 November. "He's got a bit of weight, but he's a big horse. I think he's got a probably got bit more class than the horses he's going to be running up against," Moore said. "He's a laid-back horse

@anz_news

and what he did at Flemington was game. He was very impressive. He battled and showed good drive.” Click here to view Saturday’s Gold Coast acceptances.

Higher Ground in impressive Canterbury winThe Chris Waller-trained Higher Ground (So You Think) put in an impressive performance when he took out a Benchmark 70 (1900m) at Canterbury yesterday. The three-year-old stayed on strongly to defeat Chain Of Fools (More Than Ready) by a decisive four lengths. "I think he's got a bright future over the middle distance and longer distance races," Waller said. "He's the right age to make the most of it. He's got all the attributes of a decent horse. He might go to a new level."

We Have Lift Off returns a winnerAfter a little over a year off the track, the Brad Widdup-trained We Have Lift Off (Exceed And Excel) made a winning return over 1100 metres at Canterbury yesterday. The three-year-old filly had not been seen since running fourth in the Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1100m) last December after suffering from a leg injury and she was able to get the better of Zoology (Zizou) by three quarters of a length. "She's obviously got talent, but she's got to learn to race yet and get a bit smarter," Widdup said. "It would be nice for her to go through her grades a little and see what happens.”

Blinkers do trick on Mr Money BagsThe addition of blinkers to three-year-old Mr Money Bags (Written Tycoon) made the winning difference, with the lightly raced gelding breaking through for his maiden victory over 1400 metres at Sandown Hillside yesterday. Trainer Robbie Griffiths said the gear change had made the difference on Mr Money Bags, who ran fourth at his second start at Wangaratta on 5 December. "He worked like a jet in them the other morning, but he's a big raw horse that is a work in progress," Griffiths said. "He doesn't know what he's doing on the training track. He's either anxious or lazy and doesn't seem to have a middle gear. Even though he finished off well at Moe and Wangaratta, he did in slow motion, so we put the blinkers on and they sharpened him right up.”

Shokora surprises with Sandown winCo-trainer David Hayes admitted after Shokora’s (Nicconi) victory in the Dream Thoroughbreds Handicap (1300m) at Sandown Hillside yesterday he was surprised that the filly was able to handle the step up to metropolitan class so effortlessly. The three-year-old filly, who came into the race having broken her maiden at Geelong on 3 December, beat Kaptive Hero (Kaphero) by half a length. "She has surprised us to go straight to the city like she did," Hayes said. "I thought she could win in the city but not until she got out to a mile and beyond, so that was a really good win. On today's run, and if she could repeat it, we could head to the Adelaide black-type races with her during their carnival next year."

Options outlined for WhypeeoGold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) winner Whypeeo (I Am Invincible) could tackle the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Sprint (1200m) in preference to the $2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) if the three-year-old shows he cannot run out a strong 1400 metres. The Toby Edmonds-trained gelding made it four wins from six starts with an all-the-way victory at Doomben on Saturday and is slated to have his next start in the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3,

1350m) at the same track on 30 December, his performance in which will determine his Gold Coast target.

Cruze to chase MM Guineas berthCruze (Pierro) will attempt to gain a starting berth in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with trainer Barry Lockwood believing he is up to challenge on the Gold Coast on 13 January after the gelding put in an impressive performance to win a Benchmark 65 (1350m) at Doomben yesterday. "He still has only $26,000 in prize money and I will have to get some more as our aim is the Magic Millions Guineas," Lockwood said. "But to get in he will have to run in the Vo Rogue Plate on Saturday week and if he is first or second he should make the Guineas field. If he doesn't we will just have to go back to running him through his classes."

Nomothaj Lindsay Park’s sole MM runnerLindsay Park’s senior trainer David Hayes has said Nomothaj (Snitzel) will be his sole runner in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Nomothaj has not been seen since she made a winning debut in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and will not have another start before the $2,000,000 race, but will trial over 900 metres at Rosehill tomorrow. "She's been up there a week and we plan to give her two trials as a race won't necessarily improve her," Hayes told Racing.com. "The two trials will bring her right to her top and she can go first-up into the race." Hayes also revealed that Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Qafila (Not A Single Doubt), who had been earmarked for a tilt at the Magic Millions raceday, would instead be aimed at the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Bonus offered for Sydney CupThe Australian Turf Club (ATC) yesterday announced a $100,000 bonus for the owners and a $50,000 bonus for the trainer of any horse that can win or place in one of five designated staying races before going on to win or place in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The eligible races are: The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m); the

Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m); the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m); the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m); the N E Manion Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). “The Schweppes Sydney Cup is recognised as a race that welcomes stayers from many pathways across the nation and the ATC is committed to continually raising its profile,’’ ATC chair Laurie Macri said.

Gingernuts team provide further updateTe Akau Racing issued an update on Gingernuts (Iffraaj) as he continues to recover from the broken pastern he sustained on the way to the start before his intended run in the Emirates Stakes (registered as LKS Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on 11 November. “Jerry holding his own but blood protein level drop has been a new concern so pain relief changed,” the operation said in a tweet yesterday. “Lameness mild, fingers crossed may be back at rehab farm for Christmas, no guarantee but plenty of hope for our little guy.”

Kersley injured in Sandown fallApprentice Fred Kersley will have precautionary X-rays on an arm following a fall from Foudre Boulon (Bel Esprit) at Sandown. "There's a bit of bruising there so I just want to make sure," said Kersley, who was replaced on his remaining four rides at yesterday’s meeting while Foudre Boulon was euthanised.

Hickmott to stand in for SadlerRobert Hickmott has emerged as the likely caretaker trainer of John Sadler's team at Caulfield as the latter serves a six-week suspension, although Racing Victoria chief steward Terry Bailey yesterday warned that the application has yet to be formally approved. The trainer of two Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) winners, Green Moon (Montjeu) and Almandin (Monsun) for Lloyd Williams, Hickmott split with the stable last month. Sadler, who preceded Hickmott at Williams' Macedon Lodge, was outed on Monday for six weeks for misconduct towards stewards who scratched one of his horses believing it may have received a race day treatment against the rules.

Queensland race start procedures discussedStewards will hold a meeting with Brisbane Racing Club officials to develop a consistent procedure for race starts In Queensland. The move follows complaints from jockeys about the start of the Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben last Saturday. Chief steward Allan Reardon confirmed he would seek the meeting before the major carnival races in the next three weeks. "When the jockeys on the three placegetters came back to weigh in they all said the Gold Edition start was messy," Reardon said. "They are not the types to usually make comments like that and are all very experienced. I have since spoken to just about every jockey in the race and they agreed about the start."

New QRIC director of licensing and stewardingThe Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner (QRIC) has appointed Ali Wade as the director of licensing and stewarding. Wade will be tasked with overseeing the work of 35 stewards across Queensland, as well as the licensing and registration teams and QRIC commissioer Ross Barnett said: “Ms Wade comes to the role at a time of significant change in the racing industry, including greater community expectations for the welfare of animals and the integrity of the three codes of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing."

Avdulla suspendedSydney jockey Brenton Avdulla has had his momentum halted by a five-meeting careless riding suspension after he pleaded guilty to causing interference on Emperor's Way (Roman Emperor) at the 400 metres mark of the Book Summer Hospitality Today Handicap (1900m) at Canterbury yesterday. The suspension starts on 27 December and Avdulla can resume riding on 4 January. Avdulla has ridden 32 metropolitan winners so far this season and has a two-win lead over Hugh Bowman who is riding in Japan, and Kerrin McEvoy who is sidelined with a hand injury.

RAD Board dismisses Thompson’s appealVictorian apprentice jockey Ben Thompson has

lost his appeal against a 12-meeting careless riding suspension, which sees him banned until 30 December. Thompson was suspended for his ride on the Darren Weir-trained Written In Stone (Written Tycoon) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Vale Mick CrawfordFormer Caulfield-based trainer Mick Crawford died yesterday after a battle with lung cancer at the age of 69. Crawford was foreman for trainer Angus Armanasco, overseeing the campaigns of top-class horses such as Tolerance (Better Boy), Bletchingly (Biscay) and Lowan Star (Biscay) before taking out his own trainer’s licence. Crawford’s best horse was 1980s gelding Testimony (True Statement), who won the 1987 SAJC D C McKay Stakes (Gr 3, 11000m) and the 1985 VATC Autumn Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Crawford is survived by partner Heather Lansdown, son Brent and daughter Kellie Matthews.

Highly Recommended relocates to Cambridge StudGroup Two winner Highly Recommended (Fastnet Rock), the sire of James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Sumstreetsumwhere, will relocate to Cambridge Stud in 2018. Cambridge Stud, who also stand Tavistock (Montjeu), Power (Oasis Dream) and Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice), has been acquired by Brendan and Jo Lindsay with Henry Plumptre installed as chief executive. "This sire line of Danehill and Fastnet Rock is the most pre-potent and successful thoroughbred line in the southern hemisphere," said Plumptre.

Manawatu Cup run to determine mare’s futureThe Wingatui mare Princess Brook (Raise The Flag) will make her second North Island appearance on Saturday in the Manawatu Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) at Awapuni. The six-year-old will be partnered by Chris Johnson, who has ridden her to six of her eight victories. Her performance on Saturday will determine her next target as trainer Terry Kennedy explained: “We’ll get Saturday out of the way first, but there is the Marton Cup a fortnight later and she

could run in that. She’s been going super and the bigger tracks suit her. She arrived at Bruce Herd’s place on Tuesday and she’s travelled and settled in nicely. She’s drawn well and will be ridden off the pace a bit.”

Exhibition gallop for Te Akau three-year-oldsNew Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Embellish (Savabeel) and his three-year-old stablemate Age Of Fire (Fastnet Rock), who was runner-up in the same race, completed an exhibition gallop at Matamata yesterday. The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained pair galloped over 1000 metres in 1:01.2 seconds with Opie Bosson partnering Embellish and Matt Cameron riding Age Of Fire. “It was nice comfortable work,” Autridge said. “They weren’t out to break any records, nice easy work on the bridle. The big colt on the outside (Age of Fire) is a very good track worker and Embellish just does his own thing.”

Derby-bound All Too Hard colt to stay at mile

Nigel Tiley will keep his highly-regarded All Too Hard (Casino Prince) colt Demonetization to a mile for his next start before stepping up to the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) trip. The winner of his first two starts, he finished well for third in the Trevor Eagle Memorial (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie on his last and only other outing. “He wants to go 2000 metres now, but there are two options before that,” Tiley said. “I’m looking at running him in either the Guineas at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day or I may take him down to Wellington for the Levin Classic. The ideal scenario might be to let him have another look around Auckland before the Derby, but the Levin Classic is a Group One worth $225,000 and that field might drop away a bit.”

Myers back on BenziniRosie Myers will be back on board the Adrian and Harry Bull-trained gelding Benzini (Tale Of The Cat) on Boxing Day to contest the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie. He was ridden by Leah Hemi on his last start, when fourth in the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), as it was not on his original programme and Myers had already committed to ride Consensus (Postponed), who finished second. Myers has claimed six races on the eight-year-old, including the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2400m), and has twice been Group One-placed on the bay in the New Zealand Stakes (2000m) and Livamol Classic (2040m). She said: “He’s going well and I think around 2000 to 2400m is his best trip.”

Dee to ride ConsensusMeanwhile, Consensus’s regular rider Alysha Collett is on the sidelines, after being suspended for seven days from 22 December for causing interference at Ellerslie last Sunday, and expatriate New Zealander Michael Dee will take the ride on the six-year-old in the Zabeel Classic. Now firmly established in Melbourne, Dee will also partner Princess Rihanna (Showcasing) in the Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) and the two-year-old Nirvana In Fire (Showcasing) on the same card.

Snow Secret set for third Wellington CupTrainer Shaune Ritchie has confirmed a new training plan for his Sakhee’s Secret (Sakhee) mare Snow Secret ahead of her third tilt at the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200) at Trentham on 20 January. The six-year-old was fourth in 2016 and seventh last season but was unplaced last Saturday in the Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400). “She tied up quite badly after that, which is a bit of a shame, so I don’t think I’ll run her before the Wellington Cup,” Ritchie said. “We’ll train her English-style with long, slow work without sprinting her up.”

Bailey Rogerson world’s youngest trainerSixteen-year-old Bailey Rogerson, the granddaughter of Group One-winning trainer Graeme Rogerson, will become the world’s youngest licensed trainer from 1 January.

Rogerson, who has been an amateur rider this season, will join her grandfather and Debbie Rogerson in a training partnership, with their first runners under the Team Rogerson banner at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. "I’m absolutely thrilled. It's indescribable really," Rogerson said. "I've always been involved with the horses so it seemed inevitable it would go this way. Being involved as an amateur rider and as a trainer is a win-win situation for me."

Archippus strikes at Happy ValleyThe reliable Archippus (Keeper) took out the Mercury Handicap (1200m) under a well-judged ride from Zac Purton at Happy Valley yesterday. The New Zealand-bred gelding, whose last success came 12 months ago, gained reward for some consistent efforts in defeat to Born In China (Shamardal) by three quarters of a length, with Mr Genuine (Dark Angel) a further neck behind in third place. “He had the right gate (seven) and the right run and it all fell into place,” Purton said. “He needed them to set things up with that good pace, off the mark he’s on. He’s gone up plenty of points since his last win.” Click here to view yesterday’s Happy Valley race replays.

Marsha’s dam to be covered by FrankelMarlinka (Marju), the dam of dual Group One winner Marsha (Acclamation), will be covered by Juddmonte Farms stallion Frankel (Galileo) in 2018. Marsha won the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and Prix de l’Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) during her racing career and earlier this month sold for a record-breaking 6,000,000 guineas to MV Magnier at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Herself a Listed winner out of a winning half-sister to champion mare Soviet Song (Marju), Marlinka has also produced stakes placegetter Judicial (Iffraaj) and last year threw another filly by Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic). Meanwhile, Marsha will be covered by champion sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) in the upcoming Northern Hemisphere breeding season.

Arqana enjoys successful 2017Arqana enjoyed a successful year in 2017, with several of the key indicators realising increases. In total, the ten physical and four online sales recorded a 5 per cent increase in the overall aggregate of €135,903,000, including private sales, an increase for the fifth consecutive year. Out of the 3,389 horses to go through the ring at Arqana this year, 2,685 were sold at a clearance rate of 79.24 per cent, up from 78.15 per cent last year, while the average was up from €50,235 to €50,655, though the median remained €20,000. The top lot sold at Arqana this year was a yearling colt (Lot 160) by Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) out of Group One winner Giofra (Dansili) who was purchased by Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock for €1,550,000 at the Arqana August Yearling Sale.

Fresh investors help Arqana growthArqana CEO Eric Hoyeau was understandably pleased with the results in the ring this year, and said fresh investors were bringing vitality to the French market. Hoyeau said: “2017 saw some great vitality from all the Arqana sales, with the remarkable specificity that there was growth at all market levels. Trade was fuelled by demand from a host of long-standing supporters of our auctions as well as a significant number of fresh investors, both from France and abroad, for the flat and the jumps. These are positive signs for the future of the French racing and breeding industry, and vindicate the major investments made by French breeders to upgrade their stock.”

France Galop to reduce female riding allowanceFrance Galop has announced it is to cut its revolutionary and much-debated allowance for female riders on the Flat from 2 kilograms to 1.5 kilograms from March. The governing body referred to a 165 per cent increase in the number of winners ridden by women since the change was introduced in March this year, with women accounting for twice as many rides as during the same period in 2016.

The progressive Queensland-trained four-year-old Crack Me Up (Mossman) [111] staged a strong performance in taking out Saturday’s

Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick, earning a Timeform rating in line with recent winners of the race, writes Alex Steedman.

It was also a new Timeform master rating for the Liam Birchley-trained gelding, his 111 figure matching the prior five-year winning average of the Group Two event, which has boasted two good winners from recent renewals.

Happy Clapper (Teofilo) [109] won the 2015 Villiers Stakes with a performance assessed at 109 while Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) [109] won in 2016 with the same figure.

The Pat Webster-trained Happy Clapper then came within two lengths of claiming the Villiers Stakes-Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) double when he finished second to Winx (Street Cry) [128] in 2016, before Happy Clapper also finished second in the 2017 Doncaster Mile,

this time beaten a half-length by the Godolphin-raced It’s Somewhat (Dynaformer) [122], with Sense Of Occasion running on late for third.

Both then went on to subsequent Group One victories, Sense Of Occasion taking out the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in May and Happy Clapper winning the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick in September.

The Australian Jockey Club added significant value to the Villiers Stakes in recent years, the race now carrying exemption from ballot for the subsequent Doncaster Mile and Crack Me Up has now booked himself a spot in that $3,000,000 race at Randwick on 7 April.

Crack Me Up’s Villiers Stakes also gave the gelding a new Timeform peak, his 111 rating being one pound clear of his prior master figure of 110, taken when second in the Wayne Wilson Plate (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben on 10 June.

He followed that performance with wins in the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) on 1 July, the Tattersall’s Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben

on 22 July and the Recognition Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben on 22 November.

And although highly consistent and promising, there were still some question marks surrounding the strength of Crack Me Up’s Brisbane form when he headed to Randwick on Saturday.

Those concerns have now been put to bed thanks to his narrow but game victory in the Villiers Stakes, which was run at a cracking pace which resulted in an overall time of 1:34.09 for the 1600 metres.

The race was set courtesy of a tearaway leader, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding Cabeza De Vaca (Northern Meteor) [111] who established a huge margin on the chasing pack.

Cabeza De Vaca scorched around Randwick between the 1400 and 800 metres, running sub-11 seconds through each 200 metre section.

While he was brave in the straight, Cabeza De Vaca was on tired legs and Crack Me Up capitalised, finding the front late for a long neck success, due to a well-timed bid by jockey Jason Collett who brought the Queenslander from a distant sixth at the home turn to score.

The brave leader Cabeza De Vaca held on for second while the favourite, Interlocuter (Medaglia d’Oro) [109] also made valuable late ground after being 25 lengths from the leader in ninth spot at the 600 metres in finishing third.

Two other stakes events were conducted at Randwick on Saturday, the Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) and the Christmas Cup (Listed, 2400m).

Success in the former went the way of the Kris Lees-trained mare Zestful (Redoute’s Choice) [109], who after being handily placed, fought on gamely to score by a short head from the favourite I Thought So (So You Think) [109].

Zestful recorded a Timeform rating of 109, four pounds clear of a previous master figure posted when third in the Wenona Girl Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick in March.

Brisbane now beckons for Zestful, with her next goal likely to be either the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m) or the Magic Millions Sprint (1200m) at the Gold Coast on 13 January.

The Christmas Cup saw the Chris Waller-trained stayer Vassal (Dansili) [103] take out his first stakes race with a solid staying effort in defeating the topweight Broadside (Raise The Flag) [113] by just under two lengths, with Prince Cheri (Lando) [100] a long head away in third.

Vassal is a British-bred, French-raced import that has struck winning form this preparation since returning from four runs in Queensland, now winning twice in three starts, both over 2400 metres.

The six-year-old gelding carried the limit weight of 53 kilograms, his winning display being assessed at 103, while the runner up Broadside, who conceded the winner six kilograms, produced a Timeform rating of 113.

The pair will likely clash again in the Tattersall’s Club Cup (Listed, 2400m) at the same course and distance on New Year’s Day where, with a weight swing in his favour and added fitness third run from a spell, Broadside looks capable of turning the tables. Vassal SPORTPIX

Analysis: In a surprise result, Gee Gees Top Notch ran on well to score a good win. She settled in sixth place, one off the rails, behind a good tempo. She went deep from the 600m, challenged out wide at the 200m and finished too well to record a good win, her second stakes success after winning the Elwick Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in 2015. Geegees Goldengirl had a good trip in third place on the rails. She eased deeper and into clear running on straightening, briefly hit the front at the 50m before fighting on well for second. The short-priced favourite Hellova Street soon worked across to lead. He then travelled well until pressured at the 700m (by Geegees Baritone). He beat off that runner at the home turn but could not then answer the late challengers, holding on quite well then to take the minor placing.

good front-running victory. Dark Alert raced in second place, moved up outside the leader at the 800m, challenged at the home turn and then battled strongly for a very good second, just finding the winner (who conceded him 3kg) too good. Not Again Ken travelled well in third place on the rails, stuck to the inner and got through to challenge at the 200m and kept battling on to take the third placing. The favourite Royal Star raced in fourth place, one out and one back, moved up approaching the home turn but that effort was short-lived and she just battled from that point to finish (3.3 lengths) fifth in a disappointing performance.

Analysis: The Chris Waller-trained colt Higher Ground looks a promising young stayer, now winning two (with two placings) from five starts. He settled nicely in third place, behind a steady tempo but was under riding when the pace increased at the 700m. He responded to challenge the leader (Chain Of Fools) at the home turn, went to the front at the 200m and then drew away to score quite impressively, albeit in only defeating three rivals.

Analysis: Another Flag, a three-year-gelding from the Robert Smerdon stable followed seconds at his latest two starts, to break through nicely for his first win in five starts here. He began well, settled in second place behind the leader (Last Light). He challenged at the 300m, drew clear at the 100m and then went on to win well.

Analysis: Lindsay Park-trained filly Shokora followed her first up win in a 3YO maiden (1200m) at Geelong on 3 December when having her second race start to score a really good win in stronger class here. She settled at the tail of the 13-horse field from her wide barrier (10), stuck to the rails at the home turn, got a split on passing the 200m and then finished very well to record a smart win.

Analysis: The Darren Weir-trained filly Holy Seal is building a very good record, now winning three of six starts with three placings.
