Asbury Pie Cafe Has Another Successful Year

This year was the 58th year of the Asbury Pie Cafe . Most of you know that it started in the Goat Barn at the NM State Fair and has been in the present building on Main Street since the early 1970s. In 1987 St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church joined with Asbury UMC to expand the volunteer workers and supplement the outreach of the cafe . In 1993 St. John’s UMC joined. The 3 churches shared in all aspects of the cafe , such as picking fruit, processing fruit, making pies, and running the cafe . In 2001 three more churches joined. For 2017 there were 12 churches participating in the cafe :

Asbury United Methodist Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Cornerstone United Methodist Mountainside United Methodist Covenant Presbyterian Paradise Hills United Methodist Covenant United Methodist St. John’s United Methodist Faith Lutheran St. Stephen’s United Methodist First United Methodist Rio Rancho First Baptist

This year there are 12 charity organizations that will be funded, these are: The Storehouse Project Share Meals on Wheels First UMC Grace Meal The Rock @ Noon Day South ABQ Coop Ministry Good Shepherd Family Promise ABQ Street Outreach East Mountain Food Pantry Asbury UMC Breaking Bread Silver Horizons

The church members provide all the pies at no cost to the cafe . This makes the profit margin of the cafe very large. Every penny of the profit goes to helping charities that feed the needy. This year the total number of pies sold was 1869 and the total income was $65,626. After paying expenses there will be $50,000 to fund the charities.

Read for the Fun of it! There are some new things happening in the library. A new patron in the Asbury library has a toddler who likes to keep busy. This "business" interferes with Mom and her search for books. So, the Asbury library now has a collection of toys in a red basket to keep little hand busy while the adult in the family looks at the books. Right now we have blocks and a cloth alphabet book, perfect for little hands to explore. Other things will be added as time progresses. To try to keep things interesting, some things will leave the basket and others will appear on a rotating basis. The binder of committee minutes and reports has been updated with some new financial information. Please feel free to examine these reports. The large white binder is labeled and located on the shelf near the computer CPU and next to the globe in the library. New in the Asbury Library: Children's Non Fiction: The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie DePaola. Donated by Suzanne Rhodes in Memory of Bob and Carolyn Cranfill. In response to some of the concerns voiced during the Annual Church Conference in November, 2016 and from the town hall question and answer session held later, printed copies of the minutes and reports from church committees are now available in the library. Look for the white binder on top of the shelf near the computer. Search our online catalog from your home computer or smart phone on the Asbury web site Library Page, found under Church Info, or go directly to www.asburyabq.org/AsburySearch.htm. Use the search function of your browser to find any combination of words, numbers or letters in any column. For Windows that would be Ctrl-F, for an Apple product Command-F or Apple-F, etc. Books currently on the UMW Reading Program have UMW in the Subject column and are found on the wooden cart in the library. A member of the Asbury Library staff is usually in the library during the Sunday School hour and on Thursdays from 9 to 3 to help you. You may contact us by e-mail at [email protected] with any questions, suggestions, requests or to place a hold on a book.
