TOGETHER WE ARE MISSION

This year, Mission Month not only celebrates its 93rd anniversary, but also the 100th anniversary of Pope Benedict VX/s ground-breaking apostolic letter Maximum Illud. In honour of this, Pope Francis announced October as an Extraordinary Month of Mission - a month of prayer and action for the faithful to rediscover the meaning and importance of mission in the modern world.

World Missions Ireland is a member of a global community of offices, found in over 120 countries, all of which are coordinated by the Pontifical Mission Societies—and together they form the Church’s official charity for overseas mission. They are the only Catholic charity which supports the 40% of the Universal Church that is too new, young or poor to support itself. Collectively these 120 offices have one mission—to share and strengthen the Catholic faith in overseas communities. Together, World Missions Ireland, its global offices and the faithful of Ireland are helping to secure the future of the Church by providing over one thousand struggling, young dioceses, in over 157 countries, with the tools and abilities they need to become self-sufficient. Together they enable local people to form sustainable communities of faith. They reach out to vulnerable children through educational, medical and welfare programmes. They train future priests, sisters and catechists, while also educating the faithful about mission. Delivering on this mission is no mean feat, and without World Mission Sunday it would not be possible. Official church collections for missionary activity are recorded as far back as 1838; however the official World Mission Sunday collection began in 1926. In that year Pope Pius XI announced World Mission Sunday as an official Papal collection, and every since, World Missions Ireland has been entrusted with its coordination. It is very humbling to know that on World Mission Sunday, every single parish—from the most abundant in the Western world, to smallest in developing countries—gives what it can, no matter how little, in support of missionary work. It is easy to imagine the impact the smallest gift can make when you consider that in some of the largest church in The Gambia, weekly Mass collections can come to the equivalent of just one euro. World Mission Sunday mostly assists mission diocese applications. These include daily essentials for missionaries, communication and transport needs, building of chapels, churches, nurseries, community and pastoral centres, refugee programmes, and supporting the valuable work of lay catechists in remote areas where there are few priests. Funds also support the training of local priests, brother and sisters. Our Church is a global community. We depend on one another, on our shared prayer and solidarity. World Mission Sunday and World Missions Ireland act on this by calling every parish to stand together. By continuing to support this work, not alone are the faithful of the world helping to secure the future of the Catholic Church, they are allowing it to thrive where it is most needed. For more information on World Missions Ireland, go to www.wmi/mm2019.

Harvest Mass of Thanksgiving: Sunday 27th October 2019

The Harvest Mass of Thanksgiving affords us all the opportunity to pause and give thanks for the blessings we have in life, to reflect on the sustainability of our ‘common home’, from which we sustain our families with food, and to think of, and respond to caring for those without food. All produce that will be used in the Harvest Mass will be distributed by St Vincent De Paul to needy families in our Parish and support the work of the Missionary of Charity Sisters who care for those who are homeless.

All-Saints Halloween Party takes place in the Parish Hall, Ashbourne on Thursday 31st October (eve of ‘All Saints Day’) from 6.30pm-8.30pm. Children are invited to model their costume on a saint. Why do we celebrate Halloween with All Saints party? The word Halloween literally means "hallowed evening," and was previously known as All Hallows' Eve. This name was eventually shortened to "Halloween,". Think of this when we pray the ‘Our Father’ as we say “hallowed be thy name”.

Extraordinary Month of Mission Prayer

Heavenly Father, when your only begotten Son Jesus Christ rose from the dead, he commissioned his followers to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’ and you remind us that through

our Baptism we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.

Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous in bearing witness to the Gospel, so that the

mission entrusted to the Church, which is still very far from completion, may find new and efficacious expressions that

bring life and light to the world.

Help us make it possible for all peoples to experience the saving love and mercy of Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever.

Amen
