Point to another name and date of birth and ask Ss, in pairs, to work out how old that person is.

They race their classmates to give the answer first.

(As well as the photos on page 7 of the Students’ Book, there are other photos of celebrities in the following units and lessons: Unit 4b, Unit 5c, Unit 7b, Unit 10b. The Background notes for the individual lessons give the dates of birth of each person.)

ExtensionNumbersOn the board, write the names and dates of birth of a number of celebrities – pop stars, actors and actresses, sportsmen or women, etc. If you can, bring in some photos as well.

Demonstrate what you want Ss to do first, by pointing to a name and date of birth on the board and showing the photo if you have it, e.g. Katy Perry, born 1984, and saying: Her name is (Katy Perry). She’s (31).

Extension Countries Play 20 questions with ‘Guess the country’. Think of a country from the 21 named countries in Exercise 2 of the Students’ Book. Tell the Ss they have 20 questions to guess which one you are thinking of. They can only ask yes or no questions, e.g. Is the first letter (C)?, Is it south of (Russia)? Is the capital city Beijing? They should look at the map on pages 10–11
