BALMAIN WALK

A large group of 27 members and 2

guests attended the Balmain walk.

Despite a problem with the lunch

booking and errors in choosing which

part of the walk was easy and which

part was difficult we had an enjoyable

day. The London Hotel was first class

in their service and a fine lunch

capped a great experience.

News from our June meeting

President Jeremy inducted new

members Loris and Barry Gill and

welcomed them to Asquith Mixed

Probus Club.

O.B.E – this award was presented to Lance Williamson

by Jeremy, and of course a couple of stories were told.

John Donohoe spoke on the bushranger Ben Hall. His

theory is that there may be some of Hall’s hidden

treasure still to be found.

NERVOUS FLYER

I am a very nervous flyer. During a trip from California to Indiana, it didn't help that my connecting flight from Denver was delayed twice because of mechanical problems. Then, after we were aloft, I noticed the lights began flickering. I mentioned this to a flight attendant. "I'll take care of it," she said. Moments later the lights went out. Clearly she had solved the problem by turning off all the lights. A passenger across the aisle who had been watching me leaned over and said, "Whatever you do, please don't ask about the engines."

WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? In olden times a common entertainment was playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards - but only taxed on the ‘Ace of Spades’. (Don’t ask me why.) To avoid this tax, people would purchase only 51 cards. Yet since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be mean or just silly because they weren’t ‘playing with a full deck’.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:-

TRIVIA NIGHT: Mary Potter A lot of fun at both the golf and bowling clubs. This month we were not top of the table, but sufficiently near the top to win a bottle of wine to share at the Fifth Thursday BBQ. One of our members definitely knows his head from his tail — Barry M won the jackpot with true and false (although it is understood his wife quickly acquired one of the notes leaving him with the coins). Do join the AMPs team on:

* Wednesday after the general meeting at Asquith Bowling Club, 7.30pm

WELFARE: Denise Mayhew Thankfully, I have a short report this month. Mollie Rayner, Merle Robinson, Indra Patel and Evelyn Olney

are all continuing to improve.

I received news that while she was visiting Vietnam on a recent holiday, Wendy Velthuyzen had a fall/slip on

a Temple step and has broken a bone in her foot, (I bet she said bother). Seriously though I wish her all the

best on your behalf and look forward to seeing her back at our meetings soon.

We had 13 member birthdays in June – Happy Birthday to them all and don’t forget, if your star sign is

Gemini or Cancer, there will be a chocolate for you at the check-in desk .
