Assalaamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you) Dear Friends,
On July 6th, 2016 the Muslim community observed EidulFitr thecelebration at the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan which coincidedwith Independence Day on July 4th. I say celebrated with mixedfeelings, July has been very difficult here in the Metroplex andnationwide.
While Muslims celebrated the end of the fast, our hearts were brokenat the senseless and random killings that took place in Iraq, where 300people were killed by suicide bombings, and in Saudi Arabia in thecities of Jeddah and Madina. Unfortunately, soon after Eid, we experienced the tragedies of twoAfrican American Brothers killed by Police, followed by the killing of fivepolice officers in Dallas. Since then more shootings and killingsin Baton Rouge, in Nice France.
Brothers and Sisters, our hearts are really broken. We believe that ourcommunities, in all their races, genders, ethnicities, faiths, denominations, orientations, ages, social, educational, economicaffiliations need to come together and join hands to rebuild bridges ofgoodwill, trust, compassion, kindness, empathy, and care among oneanother.
This is definitely doable, all that is required is sincerity and focus. In fact this is the history of TMWF, and our story. TMWF in 2005 brought together men, women, youth, and set about creating solutionsto address existing issues and problems. We are grateful that our trackrecord proves the possibility, practicality, and soundness of thisapproach. We did it at all levels, in the social services, we have thestellar Peace in the Home program that is providing intervention andprevention services for victims of domestic violence.

In Education and Outreach, we have forgedstrong relations of friendships both intra andinterfaith, and worked with all communities toestablish trust and goodwill. This year, ourInter/intrafaith role in IQRA brought about thejoint celebration both of EID and 4th of July andour Interfaith effort was evident during theMother's Day Luncheon "All our Brothers and
Sisters" with Rabbi Elana Zelony, Rev. Michael Waters andSheikh Omar Suleiman, all confirming the common humanity ofpeople from all faiths, and the shared experiences of minorities andraces.
Since 2008, our Youth Program initiated the Feed Your Neighbor,Humanitarian Day, Day of Dignity with the wider community twice ayear in reaching out to our homeless brothers and sisters.

"Offering prayers for the fallen and their families, here in our city andacross the nation. Offering prayers for all of us yet standing. May weput aside our fears and replace them with understanding. May welearn to walk together in peace. And today, even in our sorrow, may wetake a great step forward toward one another."

"Let's use our tears, women, as our strength! Let's fight hate with themost intense form of love, a love that has not yet been seen in theworld. Let's end racism and bigotry, violence and fear, with the fiercetears of our despair, of our grief, for our children and all other mothers'

children who have died from this violence! Let's build the power of love,of nonviolence. Let today, this very day, be the end of racism, hatred, violence and fear."
Albert Einstein, a compassionate genius stated that:
"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us 'Universe', a partlimited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts andfeelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of opticaldelusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us,restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few personsnearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison bywidening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creaturesand the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve thiscompletely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part ofthe liberation and a foundation for inner security."

God created the man and the woman as “even with each other, neither one higher than the other.” Imam Sabke quoted from Surat Ar Room (The Romans) (30:21):
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselvesmates that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed betweenyou affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for people who givethought.” Additionally he emphasized the phrase from Surat Al Imran(3:195): “You are from each other [‘ba’dukum min ba’d’].” The Imamwent on to say, “My mate is part of me and I am part of her.” Addressing the men in the audience, the Imam reminded them,“Brothers, Allah (God) is speaking directly to me and you [by] saying ‘lata’laww’ [that is] ‘do not elevate’ yourself and place yourself above yourwife or mother or sister, for you are part of her and she is part of you.”He continued to remind the men in the audience that there is no placefor arrogance or forcefulness towards women. He reiterated that thephrase, “You are from each other” is an elevation of the woman’sposition and God is telling men to defer to women, by withdrawing theirpride and arrogance. Youth Leadership DevelopmentWISE (Women's Initiative For SelfEmpowerment) workshopssponsored by TMWF in June completed the first of two MenteeMuslimah (young Muslim ladies) summer workshops, teaching theparticipants selfdefense, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
Safiyya Jeenah, one of this year's Mentee Muslimahparticipants commented on her experience at the Collin Countyworkshop: "For me, the WISE initiative provided a safe space like no other and italso taught confidence and the ability to speak up for yourself whennobody else can. As a group consisting of only young Muslim girls, this workshop gave us an amazing platform of understanding andsympathy; we knew that all of us were going through the same things. We shared our opinions and stories and if another person had adifferent opinion, there was no fight or argument. We also learned howto defend ourselves against attackers which is immensely important ina society where Islamophobia is so prevalent.
We learned about the pressure points that are needed to know to getout of a position when someone is trying to harm us and practiced how

to handle certain situations such as verbal abuse. I learned so muchfrom this workshop and it taught me that when girls build each otherup and make each other feel good about themselves, they canaccomplish much more. For example, during one activity, we weretold to share one word to describe our emotions at the time and one ofthe girls said, "I feel welcomed." That is the exact word I would use todescribe this workshop welcoming. This sense of welcoming is whatwe should have towards everyone and this workshop accomplishedexactly that!" Interfaith OutreachTexas Muslim Women's Foundation continues building bridges ofunderstanding and goodwill among peoples of all faiths and races.
In June and July during Ramadan, TMWF attended the interfaith IftarDinners hosted by major Muslim Masajids and institutions such as atDallas City Hall with Mayor Rawlings, the Islamic Association ofCollin County and East Plano Islamic Center with Mayor HarryLaRosiliere, and the Islamic Association of Frisco. Many of theIftars were attended by the City Mayor, Police Chief and various citycouncil representatives. Many contributions were made by the Muslimcommunity to mainstream non profits organizations such as NorthTexas Food Bank (to provide three healthy meals a day to underserved children, who may not otherwise have food to eat), to CollinCounty Children Advocacy Center, The Samaritan Inn, The FaithCommunity, and Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance.
One very significant Iftar was one held at Northaven UnitedMethodist Church on June 28 for the Muslim community andattended by more than 150 participants from all faiths. We extend asincere note of appreciation to the Northaven United Methodist ChurchLeadership and Reverend Folkerth for emphasizing “the need forinterfaith understanding and cooperation” to combat commonills that stem from ignorance and misunderstanding that lead tohate, bigotry, and, ultimately, violence."
