God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he replied. Then God said: "Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you." Gen. 22: 1-2 The episode above comes from our first reading at today's Mass. We recall that Abraham was a man of faith and righteousness, chosen by God, to be the father of many nations and a blessing for generations to follow. Abraham and his wife, Sarah, had no children of their own and were both on in age. Even though they had no idea how God would fulfill his promises, Abraham trusted God. Persevering in faith they eventually they conceived and bore a son named Isaac, their only begotten. This is where the story seems to get difficult. God orders Abraham to take his son Isaac, the promised son, and sacrifice him on top of the mountain. Horrifically, many of the peoples around Abraham would offer their sons and daughters in sacrifice to demons, often burning them alive. It seems incredibly odd to our ears, as it must have been for Abraham, to hear these words from God. Why would God give him a son only to ask to have him sacrificed? The answer? To test Abraham, much like Jesus was tested in the desert for forty days and nights. Yet God did not want Isaac's death, only Abraham's faith! A second time the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by my very self—oracle of the LORD—that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your son, your only one, I will bless you and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth will find blessing, because you obeyed my command.” We see how the Lord demands absolute fidelity while at the same time being most gracious. He did not take Isaac from Abraham but made him the father of Jacob, who later was named Israel. Then Abraham became the grand-father of the twelve sons of Israel, and so on all the way down to include the Jews of today and every Christian in the world. Billions of souls! God is always faithful to his promises and is never outdone in generosity. You and I will be tested in our faith, that fact is inevitable. There are some denominations that preach a gospel of prosperity. If you are a good Christian you'll have lots of money, a big house, fancy car, etc., all without the cross. But this couldn't be further from the truth. In the words of Father John Perricone: For the Romans, so expert in the art of grotesque executions, the Cross was the end. For Christ, and for us, it is a beginning. We do not bear its suffering for their own sake, but for the sake of winning a happiness “that eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, what things God has prepared for them that love him” (I Cor. 2:9). God does not will suffering for us, but eternal bliss. But for us “poor children of Eve,” burdened by the effects of Original Sin, bliss can only come through the wood of the Cross. Ave Crux, unica spes (“Hail the Cross, our only hope!”) as the ancient prayer of the Church de-clares. Yes, we must always be wary of the ugliest temptation: wanting heaven on earth. Happiness without a price. Christ without the Cross.... How often political systems have tried state programs that would guar-antee heaven on earth: happiness without paying the price. Shades of Christ without the Cross. St. Thomas More once wrote a political treatise on a country where everyone was always happy. He titled it Utopia, which is the Greek work for “nowhere.” Few have grasped the irony. Commenting upon the political temp-tation to creating a state where everyone earns the same, enjoys equal amounts of happiness, and no one ever has to work “too hard,” the political philosopher Donoso Cortes remarked, “Imagined utopias always become real hells.” Catholics must ever by wary of the ugliest temptation. Christ cannot be loved without the Cross. We must never try to find heaven in this world of ours, the “vale of tears.” The only place we will ever find Heaven is in Heaven.

A new Bereavement Ministry has been established at St John the Evangelist and the trained team members are actively helping parish families who have lost a family member. They are there from the very beginning to assist and guide in planning, organizing, and overseeing the Funerals or Memorials all the way to completion. When this time occurs each family is assigned their own personal team to hold their hand and give them comfort and guidance as they travel this difficult journey. If you receive a prognosis of imminent death or when the loss oc-curs call the Parish Office to make contact with this Ministry of compas-sion and consolation.

If interested in joining the Ministry contact the Parish Office.

Del Pastor

Dios puso a Abraham a prueba.
