KINNEY ATLANTIC NEWS STAFF WRITER GREENLAND | At La Famiglia Ristorante, family is more than just a name. Often times Patrick and Joann O’Keefe, as well as their four children, Alexan- dra, John, Luke and Peter can be found on the premises. One gets an equal sense of walking into a beautifully decorated restaurant and being wel- comed into their home for great Italian food. “Two of the things we do very well is family and food,” says Patrick. And Patrick loves food. Speaking with him for only a few brief moments will lead to a host of food-based topics including the origins of Italian cooking, what it takes to make a really great pizza and why the quality of products one uses in any meal leads to quality of the meal itself. He credits his Enjoy la dolce vita at La Famiglia “the best pizza on the Sea- coast.” “When you actually eat the dough it’s got that great Italian flavor,” says Patrick. “The raw dough feels like silk. People start getting our pizza and they don’t stop.” The care and quality of products used don’t stop at the pizza. La Famiglia Ris- torante bakes its own breads, makes all its own sauces and desserts and uses only the freshest veg- etables, many of which are picked and purchased from Blueberry Bay Farm, which is right down the road. “The taste is amazing,” says Patrick. “This is a sig- nificantly higher quality product. We don’t use any processed foods.” La Famiglia’s menu is a combination of traditional Italian cuisine, as well as some Americanized favorites that are sure to appeal to the whole family. “We’re not here to teach you how to eat Italian food,” Patrick says. “As for traditional Italian food, you’ll find what you’re looking for. We try to bring the quality of formal din- ing to simple recipes.” All that quality and rea- sonable prices (few items on the dinner menu are more than $20) make La Famiglia Ristorante a great choice for lunch and dinner for the whole family, or an intimate evening for two. Patrick says the true payoff is La Dolce Vita, “the sweet life,” as he calls it. “When a couple leaves here and they both have that glow and they’re relaxed and all that stress that binds them up is gone that’s ‘la dolce vita,’ the sweet life. That’s the point of all this,” he says. At the end of the month love of food to his mother. “She taught me from a very young age,” he says. “She’s the greatest chef I ever met. She served nine kids and her husband three meals a day. She managed a kitchen and taught me how to manage a kitchen just from being around her.” That’s quite a compli- ment from a man who has been working as a chef for more than 30 years, and that love of both food and cooking translates into the quality of the offerings at La Famiglia Ristorante. In making the pizza, Patrick says they use “dou- ble-o” pizza dough imported directly from Italy. The dough is then allowed to sit or “rest” for a couple days. The result is what Patrick swears is, La Famiglia Ristorante will begin hosting a series of live, interactive dinner the- aters. The first production, “Poe Evermore,” will be held on July 30, at 4:30 p.m. Joann said future shows will include a Black- beard theme, and for the holidays, something based upon the works of Charles Dickens. “I’ve never seen it hap- pen so it’s a big exciting venture for all of us,” says Joann. To make reservations to partake in the show, order a great pizza or any of the other fabulous menu items, call (603) 431-0368 or visit them at 780 Portsmouth Avenue in Greenland. And if you happen to see young Luke O’Keefe, ask him to sing the “La Famiglia” song for you. You’re sure to be enter- tained.
