St. Joseph
Food Pantry
A Ministry of St. Brendan
Catholic Church
The St. Joseph Food Pantry has long been a staple
of our stewardship efforts here at St. Brendan’s.
In March 2009, at the urging of Sister Joan Daly
who dreamt of a parish food pantry, an organizational
meeting was held. Current Ministry Leader Barbara
Gordon attended that meeting and decided it was time
to get involved after having spent many years in the
busy business world. “As it would be, the Holy Spirit
tagged me, and lifted my hand when they called for a
volunteer leader,” she recalls
The shelves were initially stocked with donations
from that year’s Cardboard Box City. With a team of
about 20 volunteers, the food pantry was opened on
May 27.
Fr. John Howren, our Pastor at the time, named
the Pantry and gave us the beautiful icon that hangs,
watchfully at the Pantry door.
For the !irst couple months, few people found
their way to our doors. However, by mid-summer,
more families began to appear.

Gloria: Adoring and Thanking the Lamb of God
and Lord of Lords
The second strophe of the Gloria praises Our Lord’s divinity as well as
his humanity. We praise Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins
of the world, the same praise as St. John the Baptist when he was encour-
aging his disciples to follow him (John 1:29) and announcing what he
would do for the world. This image of Christ captured the imagination of
St. John the Evangelist, just as it should capture ours; from these few
words of the Baptist he was led to see and describe Christ as the Lamb in
his glory in the Book of Revelation.
In ancient times the Romans addressed the emperor or special cult
heroes as “lord”: here we profess our faith in the one true and unmatched
hero, as well as our “Lord God.” As we say these words we leave no doubt
as to whether we idolize anyone or anything else; the Holy One is God,
which is why the strophe and the hymn ends on a Trinitary note, not only
praising Jesus the Son, but the Father and the Holy Spirit as well, reminis-
cent of 1 Corinthians 8:6 (“yet for us there is one God, the Father, from
whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom are all things and through whom we exist”) and Philippi-
ans 2:11 (“…and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glo-
ry of God the Father”).
We’ve learned from an early age the First Commandment: “I am the
Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me.” The Gloria is
the perfect antidote to any idolatry we may have fallen into. In the past it
was divine beings, heroes, and emperors—the Christians in composing
and singing the Gloria responded decisively against such false gods. Today
the list of potential false gods has expanded to relationships, possessions,
ego, pleasure, an innumerable list. This hymn, if we pray it from the heart
and not in vain (see Commandment Two), will keep us focused on who
our true hero and God is, and give him the credit he is due.
In The Spotlight (continued from front page)
Financial support arrived in many forms. With
gifts donated by three different businesses, we were
able to have boutique sales after Masses to fund our
pantry. In addition, several large !inancial donations
from parishioners helped to sustain the pantry fund.
Volunteers were, and still are, very willing and
helpful people with a wealth of wonderful ideas. Today
our volunteer list is over 250. The Holy Spirit continues
to lift hands as help is needed.
The pantry came to our community during dif!icult
!inancial times for our country. During those years our
families grew to numbers that were a bit scary. We
served as many as 120 families each week. We saw
tremendous need and many tears.
Today we serve about 200 families a month. We
provide two beautiful holiday markets, school supplies,
free !lu shots for adults, snacks for tutoring programs at
two schools, home delivery and much, much more. Our
Garden Ministry provides fresh produce! Support from
St. Vincent de Paul, our Knights of Columbus and many
other ministries keep bringing blessings!
Barbara says, “We strive to be a friendly environ-
ment greeting people with respect and a warm caring
smile." We serve at the pleasure of the Lord! We are
truly blessed to have a place at St. Brendan where we
are able to serve those in need!
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or in
contributing to the Pantry, contact Barbara Gordon at
404-431-9924 or [email protected].

Fr. Matthew and the Building Committee met with
our architect recently to discuss interior designs of our
new Chapel. The theme will be the Resurrection of Our
Lord. The Chapel will re!lect a gothic style consisting of
stone, woodwork, marble tile, liturgical art, stations of
the cross and liturgically themed stained glass.
Seating approximately 100 people, with an adjoin-
ing multi-purpose room, this area will be self- con-
tained to support events such as small weddings, bap-
tisms, funerals, and quinceaneras.
Overall our !irst phase programming will dramati-
cally improve our !lexibility to accommodate our
growing parish family and provide the necessary space
to continue our journey in faith.
