K.R - Grand Duke of

Russia and grandson of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia - was born in 1858

in Strelna. A staunch patron of Russian art, he was an accomplished artist

himself, a talented pianist, a renowned translator of foreign literary works

including his personal favorite translation of Hamlet, and a great poet and

playwright. He wrote his decidedly anti-Semitic play "King of the Jews.

Drama in Four Acts and Five Scenes" at a time when the Russian

Orthodox Church forbade the appearance of any Bible figures on public

stage. His work, depicting the Resurrection and Passion of Jesus Christ

through the eyes of a commoner, also challenged the Divine rights of the

nobility. Undeterred by those obstacles, Konstantin staged the play in the

form of series of 'rehearsals' for a selected, invitation-only audience at the

Winter Palace in January of 1914. The Grand Duke himself portrayed

Joseph of Arimathea in the production. The play was well-received and a

number of foreign translations were published, including the English

version "The King of Jews: A Sacred Drama" translated by Victor Marsden.

'Textbook of Shanghai Dialect' was two dedicated individuals' remarkable collaboration on a difficult subject -

for the benefit of the Russian emigre community in China which, by the end of the 1930s, had reached its

highest number yet. Slobodchikov was a Russian linguist, educator, and author in exile and Francis Lister

Hawks Pott was a US American Episcopal Missionary in China whose previously published "Lessons in the

Shanghai Dialect" was largely used in the writing of the present book.

Shanghai did not emerge as a regional center of commerce

until it was opened to Western investments during the late

Qing Dynasty at the end of the 19th century. The boost in

economy and the enormous influx of immigrants, many of

them Russians forced to flee their country, prompted the

Shanghai dialect to become one of the fastest-developing

dialects of Wu Chinese which in turn necessitated the

creation of the current book. OCLC lists one copy at UC

Berkeley with none other in the trade.

The first sustained effort to translate and publish the Bible into modern Russian was put in motion in 1812

when Tsar Alexander I chartered the founding of the Russian Bible Society (Rossiiskago Bibleiskago

Obshchestva) in Saint Petersburg. The society ceased to exist in 1826 but in its 14 years of operation it

published the first ever Russian vernacular Gospels in 1819, a complete Russian New Testament in 1821, and

a Russian Psalter in 1822 (the current book) with a circulation in the first six printings of several hundred

thousand copies. The first eight books of the Old Testament - the Octateuch - were also printed although the

text was never permitted distribution. The President of the

society was Alexander Golitsyn - a close friend of Alexander I and

a staunch supporter of the tsar's religious awakening movements

thus providing the society with exemption of censorship from

the Holy Synod. When it came to the translation of the Psalter, it

was decided the Hebrew Massoretic text rather than the Greek

Septuagint one would be used as a basis. The translation

subcommittee even prepared a preface in which they defended

their choice of primary material. It was not until the late 1860s

when new translations of the Holy Books were completed.

The first and only complete Russian edition (parts of the book had

been pirated and published in the French journal "Illustration"

without the author's permission.) Pierre Gilliard, a Swiss author

and academic, was the French language tutor of the children of

Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra from 1905 to 1918. He was

very close to the family and followed them to Siberia where they

were sent into exile after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Gilliard

remained in Siberia after their murders and worked with

investigator Sokolov on unearthing the truth about the demise of

the Romanovs until 1920 when he returned to Switzerland.

His current memoir follows his 13 years with the emperor's family

as well as the year of investigations following the family's murders.

Though OCLC lists several copies in institutions research has shown no evidence of a copy sold at auction.

A stunning emigre edition of Russian poet and author Petr Ershov's

most famous fairy tale "The Little Humpbacked Horse" (alternately

translated in English as "The Little Magic Horse"). First published

in the early 1830s and with its plot following the story of peasant

Ivan and his carrying out the unreasonable demands of the Tsar,

the tale was banned for over 20 years in the mid-1850s for making

the Russian Tsar appear stupid.

The illustrator, George Schlicht, was born in 1886 to a German

engineer father and a Russian mother from a noble family. He

taught art from 1911 to 1917 at Moscow School of Painting,

Sculpture and Architecture. In 1918 Schlicht was sent into exile in

Germany. In Berlin he continued painting, exhibiting, and

illustrating books and became closely involved with the Russian

emigre community there. During the WWII air raids of Berlin his

studio was destroyed and many of his works perished.

Nestor Ivanovich Makhno - Ukrainian anarchist and Commander of the

Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine (also called 'The Black Army')

wrote his current book in response to Soviet scholar M. Kubanin's anti-

Makhno work "Makhnovshchina." Nestor Makhno, the son of peasants, was

born in 1889 in Huliaipole, Ukraine. Shortly after joining a local anarchist

group in 1906 he was arrested, released, re-arrested, and eventually

sentenced to death - later reprieved because of his youth and instead

imprisoned in the scariest penal institution in Moscow, Butyrki Prison. He

was released after the Revolution in 1917 and returned to his native village.

By the Winter of 1918 Makhno had managed to unite various anarchist detachments and peasant guerrilla

groups leading against and winning victories over German, Austrian, and Ukrainian nationalist forces as well

as units of the White Army. For the next several years his allegiance for and against the Red Army kept

shifting but nevertheless, to the end, Makhno and his army refused to hold Bolshevik-supervised elections or

accept Bolshevik-appointed political commissars. In 1921 fled the Ukrainian Red forces to Romania, Germany,

and eventually Paris where he quickly became close with other exiles, wrote several books, and co-wrote for

various emigre journals. He died in 1934 from tuberculosis.

An uncommon example of the mostly-forgotten publishing

history of Russian DP (Displaced Persons) Camps in Germany

after the end of the Second World War. The camps (many of

them repurposed concentration camps) were established immediately after the end of the war in the British

and American occupation zones in Germany and Austria. With more than a million Russians – displaced but

determined to sustain their language and culture, a number of small, literally home-made publishing ventures

were found. It was not an easy feat as military authorities largely discouraged nationalism and cultural

exhibits in the camps. All publications had to be censored with most of them carrying an approval stamp or

imprint such as the one in the current book - Approved by UNRRA Team 133 – with UNRRA being The

United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and the number indicating the censorship team

responsible for each DP camp. All the pamphlets, broadsides, and books were printed on cheap paper and

were not meant to last making any survivors from this dark and turbulent period in history extreme

scarcities.

Professor Georgii Chelpanov was a renowned Russian psychologist and philosopher of the neo-Kantianism and

Positivism schools in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. He was the founder of the Psychological

Institute at Moscow University and one of his books, "The Brain and the Soul" (1900), was described in V.

Zenkovsky's book on the history of Russian philosophy as 'the best not only in Russian but in world literature.'

His textbook of Psychology was the one commonly used not only in Russia but in emigre communities abroad

as well.

13. Zherlitsyn, Mikhail Basni (Fables)

Ukrainian author and linguist Mikhail Zherlitsyn immigrated to the US

after the Revolution. He had previously written a study of Samuel Coleridge

and the English Romanticism in 1914 while still in Odessa. In 1947 in New

York he published several books of short stories and poems, including the

present one titled, somewhat whimsically, 'Basni' ('Fables'). One might even

find them a bit morbid as the first one is named "Obituary" and tells the

story, in rhymes, of two violinists - a man and a monkey - who catch a cold

while playing and die.

Fedir Bogatyrchuk was a Ukrainian-Canadian political activist and

member of the Russian Liberation Army as well as an international

chess master and a doctor. During WWII his presumed collaboration

with the Nazis resulted in the Soviets removing many of his chess

games from their official records. He fled to Canada in 1948 where he became a professor at the University of

Ottawa. His current book - part memoir, part biography, and part history - describes his friendship with Andrei Vlasov,

his time in the Russian Liberation Army, his life and work in Canada, etc. The photographs document, among

other things, moments from the penning of the Prague Manifesto and hungry Ukrainian mothers with children

during the Collectivization.

Andrei Dikii was a Russian emigre writer, politician, member of the

Russian Liberation Army, and a staunch supporter of antisemitism

and the anti-Ukrainian Sentiment. He emigrated to the US after

WWII and published various antisemitic articles and books. In fact,

his writings were heavily used by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in his

historical essay "Two Hundred Years Together."

Elena Petrovna Baranova - von Grot (1891-1968) had been on her way to

a professorship in literature when the Revolution broke out. Instead of

going into academics, in 1916 Elena came to US with her husband A. F.

Grot who had received a military appointment here. By 1921 the family

had settled in the San Francisco Bay Area - first in the city, then in

Berkeley, and finally in Los Gatos. Grot was a prolific writer publishing

poetry, essays, and plays. She was also an editor of several Russian

emigre journals and magazines. Her current book, containing some of

her best poems and essays, was published posthumously (a year after her death) in Spain. $70.00

Max Nettlau was a German anarchist, historian, and bibliophile. He made a

concentrated effort to collect and preserve Anarchism archives and

interviewed many of the leading figures of the movement in the late 1800s

and early 1900s. He also maintained close contacts and friendships with

many of those figures including Mikhail Bakunin and Errico Malatesta, the

former being mentioned in the present book. "The Goals and Methods of

Anarchism" is a clear and exhaustive representation of his theory on the

subject.

The author, Lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army Hermengild Wagner, was a special correspondent for

the Vienna Reichspost and the London Daily Mail in Bulgaria during the First Balkan War (The War of 1912-

1913). His book, published in English as "With the Victorious Bulgarians," was based on his own eyewitness

accounts and notes from the moment the Bulgarian Army was mobilized through the battles raging for the

next year. Recent research of Bulgarian archives from the time period (Iavorski, Velin. "Goniat Korespondenti

zaradi Voenna Taina." Bulgarska Armiia: 4/12/2013) have unearthed an alleged cover up of international

correspondents being chased, restricted, and arrested by army authorities in order to prevent them from

sending reports to the media and thus intentionally or unwittingly revealing military secrets and battle

strategies. Apparently, Wagner was one of the harassed journalists. Towards the end of the war, he had spent

a week on the battlefield around Edirne, Turkey and was on his way back to Sofia when he was "caught"

counting cannons being transported on trains. He was arrested, accused of being a spy, and thrown out of

Bulgaria.

The previous owner of the book,Capt Elmer Ernest Count, Jr., was the son of Elmer Ernest Count - an author

of numerous religious articles and works and a Methodist missionary in Bulgaria.

OCLC lists 2 copies in institutions with none other in the trade. $280.00

19. Dontsov, D. Vid Mistiki do Politiki (From Mysticism to

Politics)

Dmytro Dontsov (1883 – 1973) was a Ukrainian author, journalist,

and a radical political thinker with great influence over the

Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. Born in a Cossack

officer's family, Dontsov joined the Ukrainian Social-Democratic

Labor Party in 1905, was arrested shortly after for being an

instigator in "Socialist politics," and was forced to move to Vienna

in 1909. After the Revolution, he returned home and was

appointed Head of Pavlo Skoropadsky's Government's official

news agency. By 1922 Dmytro had rejected the Nationalist ideas of his youth and had increasingly become

immersed in radical Nationalism. In 1939, right before the takeover of Western Ukraine by the Soviets

Dontsov fled his country for Bucharest, then Prague, Germany, Paris, and the United States until he finally

settled in Toronto where he taught Ukrainian literature at Universite de Montreal.

The summary of his current book, one of his most pronounced anti-Semitic works, reads: "Muscovite

Communism and Zionism are two forces that on the basis of their mysticism...consider their nations to be

"higher," to be "chosen peoples"...If Ukraine is to be victorious in its age old struggle against Muscovite

messianism, she must turn to the mysticism of ancient Christian Kiev..."

Published as a memento in honor of the 350-year anniversary of

the reign of the Romanov Family, the book represents a

remarkably well documented chronology of the rulers -

completed with photographs and milestones of each one of them

beginning with Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov (Mikhail I of

Archpriest Leonid Ivanovich Kolchev was born in 1871. In 1905 he

was appointed member of the Court Clergy at the Imperial Estate

Oreanda in the Crimea. Persecuted and forced to emigrate after the

Revolution, Leonid and his young family settled in Constantinople

where he was a member of the Episcopal Council of the Russian

Orthodox Church. In 1924, Maria Feodorovna - Princess Dagmar of

Denmark, Empress Consort of Russia, spouse of Emperor Alexander

III, and mother of Nicholas II - arranged for the Kolchev family to

move to Denmark where - for the remainder of his life - Leonid

Ivanovich was the head of the Orthodox Church of St. Alexander

Nevsky in Copenhagen. He wrote several articles, sermons, and books but none was as popular and, in fact

still reprinted today in several languages including English, as his current "Mysteries of Life after Death" in

which he offers his explanation to the question of what happens to the soul after death and how one can

prepare oneself for that time.

'The White Book' - part biography and part archive of documents,

letters, and articles - was published by supporters of Archbishop

Afanasii of Buenos Aires as a response to allegations against him by

parishioners and immigrants in Argentina and Australia.

Archbishop Afanasii (Anton Martos) was born near Nesvizh,

Belarus in 1904. After holding various positions in his country, in

1946 he moved to Hamburg where he worked with his compatriots

at the Fishbeck DP Camp. In 1950 Afanasii was appointed Bishop

in Sidney, Australia and in 1956 with the death of Archbishop

Ioasaf in Argentina Afanasii took his spot and sailed to Buenos

Aires. On the one hand, he was known to work with the Russian emigre youth, publish a religious journal, and

manage to secure funds for buying land and, ultimately, building an Orthodox cathedral for his parishioners in

Buenos Aires; on the other hand, in a series of letters and articles, he was accused of "defiantly refusing to

condemn Communism," never speaking of Russia, and of altogether professing anti-Russian sentiments. The

publication of the book was the ultimate refutation to the "slanderous and false efforts of wicked men."

A scarce copy of what is considered the height of Merezhkovskii's

literary career. He was an author, poet, religious critic, co-founder

of the Symbolist Movement, and husband of revered poet Zinaida

Gippius. Right before returning home from exile in Paris in 1908,

Merezhkovskii published his historical drama 'Pavel the First'

which was promptly confiscated and banned by the Russian

authorities. It would become the first in his "The Kingdom of the

Beast" trilogy of which the current "Alexander the First" would be

the second and "December the 14th" the third and last one.

Throughout his life he would be nominated for the Nobel Prize in

Literature 9 times, winning none - each time for various reasons including his alleged support of Hitler and his

connections to "terrorists" among others.
