In today’s contemporary society, projects with character and essence have a greater marketing strength with audiences. Craftsmanship in Tuscany automatically presents these traits and that of atavism through the use of traditional materials, techniques and the resultant creative products; all pertaining to the identity and historical heritage of the region. The rich attributes in question; from stories, design strategies and materials to the unique mark left by the hand of the maker provides significant sustenance to the internet community; inspiring blogs, online articles and other social media which in turn serves to raise the profile of craftsmanship alongside broadening the reach of it’s market.

The impact of technological developments on the production of craft in addition to business management is substantial and fundamental in ensuring continued success and growth within the industry. Technology now firmly on the market following experimentation such as advanced 2D/ 3D printing and laser cutting is allowing companies the opportunity for efficient and fast development of products. In the virtual world, e-commerce and initiatives such as crowd funding in addition to free marketing afforded by social media are providing extensive and extraordinary opportunities for the typical craft business. The 18 – 35 young age range of applicants to Scenari di Innovazione reflects the most digitally active section of the population and are potentially the best placed to naturally take advantage of all that the Internet has to offer, vitally contributing to the competiveness of this sector.

The breadth of the theme demonstrated in the image on this year’s competition literature, necessitates equal consideration of both Atavism and Technology; the past in its enormity side by side with contemporary propulsion. Through the role of design, applicants are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively to design new and originalproducts by merging new technologies with handicraft production that furthermore acknowledges the genius loci, artistic handicraft and design associated with Tuscany.

In addition to this theme applicants must select a company and choose one of the briefs presented. When designingtheir product or collections they must also consider the production guidelines, corporate philosophies and material requirementsprovided by the ten Tuscan small and medium craft enterprises (SMEs).

Two images from the film Cloud Atlas 2012. Written and directed by brother and sister Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer. Taken from the novel Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, this science fiction film interweaves six stories set in different times and places. The settings, costumes and objects describe in exemplary manner, both the technological and atavic dimension, comparing them and fusing them in unique and impressive scenes.

LilyPad is a microcontroller board that links design, fashion and technology with pure electronics. It was created (based on an Italian open source system - Arduino) by Leah Buechley, CEO of High-Low Tech Group Mit Media Lab, of Toronto. It can be used for numerous creative applications in fashion and in design. The chip, is optimised for being sewn onto fabric and hence integrated into clothes, bags or scarves. It is washable and its various working parts can be sewn together using conductive tailor’s thread.

Massimo Banzi co-founder of Arduino; electronic board with microcontroller and circuitry useful for fast prototyping for hobby and educational uses. Arduino is opening new horizons in open-source electronics. There are numerous fields of application. Still in their infancy, but extremely interesting, are possible applications in the field of design and craftsmanship. Interactive musical games based on the use of Arduino. Historical inspirationThe atmosphere of the mausoleum of galla Placidia is unquestionably magical. Entering this little building in the shape of a Latin cross, one is struck by the sudden passage from daylight to a nocturnal atmosphere. The alabaster slabs that close the narrow slits of the windows; filtering the amber light from outside incredibly emphasise this. In the past, before glass was available windows were often closed with thin slabs of marble. Mausoleum of Galla Placidia 450 A.D. ravenna Final period of the Western Roman empire - Byzantine period.

Suspension lamps created within the project I Marmi del Doge. Designer raffaello galiotto. A peculiarity of stone and, in particular, of marble is the unique and unrepeatable nature. Even though the formal appearance is the same, the pattern of the material is inevitably different, giving added value to the product.

Frank o. gehry Cardboard furniture Easy Edge 1972. Having analysed and observed cardboard and identified its qualities Gehry imagined its use in hitherto unexplored places, such as interior design, offering the sector an economic and versatile alternative material. Twenty years on, Paolo ulian proposes a seat in corrugated cardboard 1995; Small slivers of micro-corrugated cardboard are wound around two steel tubes curved into a rectangular shape, which gives the final form to the seat. In this way the phase of gluing the cardboard, strip by strip, can be eliminated.

Cuccia da Viaggio (Travel Basket) by Paolo ulian is for small animals, in folding cardboard. It looks like an art folder but inside it contains a little house that becomes three-dimensional. Bara Ecopod by Hezel Selina made of recycled paper from used newspapers. Its surface finish is achieved with a layer of materials derived from silk recycling and from mulberry leaves. The final strength of the container is obtained using special manual pressure and using absolutely no synthetic additives.
