“I believe that if my players are good athletes, and are willing to work hard, they can contribute to the program. Girls on the team range from those who play at the national level, to those who play during the season, but are also great athletes in other sports.”

— Tracy Stickney Head varsity fi eld hockey coach,

dorm parent, and science teacher

Our athletic teams are known for their Independent School League (ISL) and New England titles. We are home to some of the best athletes in Massachusetts, many of whom go on from Governor’s to play on nationally ranked college teams, competing at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels, often serving as team captains.

These same athletes also write for our literary magazine, perform in our musicals, and take top academic honors. We boast nearly 60 varsity sports and interscholastic teams. The athletic program provides rigorous and competitive options for the elite athlete and levels for those who are interested in playing a new sport or developing toward varsity competition. We encourage athletes to play sports in multiple seasons. All teams are coached by our faculty.

Governor’s competes in the highly regarded Independent School League. Many of our teams qualify for the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) tournaments. Our student athletes are representative of the entire student body; you may find the captain of the lacrosse team playing lead in a school play or the left wing on the hockey team serving as class president. In 2016, 34 of 80 Massachusetts Scholastic Art Awards that Governor’s students won, were created by varsity athletes. Of the four students who won national art award recognition, three were varsity athletes.

“Joining the wrestling team was a great experience. I came to Govs for the arts, but wanted to get in shape and try something new. Some friends encouraged me to come see what the team was like …I’m really glad I ventured out of my comfort zone and tried it because I feel like it has helped me a lot with developing my skills in discipline, focus, and self-motivation.” — Michaells Fana ‘17

“The most memorable thing in my first few weeks was probably preseason for soccer. Just getting to know everybody on the soccer team and hanging out with them was fun and eased my transition

into Govs. Coming in not knowing anybody, then automatically having a family within a few days,

was huge for me.” — Jenna Tivnan ‘18
