MEWP Prevenve Maintenance & 1st Check!

A crical part of effecve maintenance/reliability and safetyis the “Post-hire Inspecon” Manli refers to this as our 1st Check. It is the inial health check given to a MEWP post rrental. Only competent trained persons shall perform this rental cycle process.

AVOID ENTRAPMENT! As a MEWP operator or occupant you must ALWAYS observe in the direcon you are moving! To avoid “entrapment” and collision, connual vigilance is key! “The Internaonal Powered AAccess Federaon” IPAF instructors are aware of this required behaviour characterisc for MEWP occupants and it is emphasised connuously during IPAF MEWP operator training.

MANHOLE COVER HAZARD

If you are in an area where manhole coversare evident, be aware that underground piping may run between the manhole covers, and the area should be clearly marked via safety cones etc. so the MEWP operator can clearly see the hazard from hheight. NOTE: “underground service” covers can also be present indoors!

#5 INSPECTION FOR CRACKED WELDS ON MEWPS MEWPs can suffer from “cracked welds”, this phenomenon can present on any type of MEWP from any manufacturer and for mulple reasons. Owners and users of MEWPs have front line responsibilies for detecng cracked welds that can develop in a MEWP.

Detecon Inspecons for this type of defect is a standard process that must be performed. It is mandated by manufacturers and regulatory authories at specific intervals e.g.:• Prior to delivery inspecons• Post rental inspecons• During periodic and preventave maintenance inspecons

• At milestones in working hours or age of the MEWP• Aer incident• During use (pre-operaon inspecons)

Where to inspect for cracked welds and how is informaon provided by Manufacturers Training and literature, Training bodies such as IPAF in their training modules, and specifically qualified personnel for this task.

TELESCOPIC HANDLER USE IN THE WORKPLACEIn the workplace we oen see “Telescopic Handlers” ulized. Correctly used and maintained them significantly improve safety and efficiency. Their roles are numerous on the construcon site, workshop, industrial and yard applicaons, they can be dangerous to operators, onlookers and others plus pose risks related to property damage if not correctly managed.

Some of the important points to ensure safe and effecve use are:• DO-NOT use unapproved aachments• DO always use seat belts• DO-NOT ride on the equipment as a passenger• DO perform pre-use inspecons• DO have preventave maintenance carried out at required intervals•• DO have competent “Trained” operators

• DO invest in addional technology that can enhance Telehandler safe use • DO monitor use and manage “unsafe-use / unsafe acts”• DO understand the type of load and weight of the load to be posioned• DO avoid complacency in use or overconfidence•• DO NOT become distracted during use of the equipment

LIFTING A MEWP WITH A CRANE

• DO have a li plan & Risk assessment prepared by a competent person• DO Refer to machine specific “Operator Manual” for liing guidance• DO ensure use of a Competent crane operator•• DO ensure use of a Competent dogman (rigger)• DO ensure the Liing Crane is in test• DO check all liing devices (chains, Slings, shackles etc.) rated & serviceable condion• DO only use the designated MEWP liing points•• DO ensure no damage / cracked welds at designated liing points.• DO NOT allow persons to be in the plaorm or basket during the li• DO ensure MEWP in “transport posion”? Refer “machine specific” operator manual!• DO Lock the turntable as required prior to any li (refer operator manual)• DO NOT have loose items in the plaorm or basket• DO refer to the “Data Plate” confirming MEWP weight prior to li• DO ensure the MEWP remains level during the li

MAKE SURE YOUR MEWP “SAFETY DECALS” ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND NOT MISSING!Safety and Instruconal decals or sckers have a very important role on MEWPs and directly influence MEWP safe use.• If they are unreadable, missing, peeling, faded etc they must be replaced.

• During your “pre-use inspecon” use the machine specific operator manual to help you understand if any Safety Decals are missing.

•• Note any decals that are faded or damaged to a level where they cannot be understood.

• Do-not permit anyone to cover safety decals with any other sckers or material!

• All safety and instruconal decals are important to maintainin good condion!
