GOSPEL and PARENTING

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”— which

is the first commandment with a promise —

EPHESIANS 6:1-4

3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy

long life on the earth.” 4 Fathers,do not exasperate your

children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction

of the Lord.

EPHESIANS 6:1-4

THREE FOUNDATIONS

1. THE WORD IS SUFFICIENT.

2. THE HOME IS CENTRAL.

3. THE GOSPEL IS NECESSARY.

a. The Gospel is our source of

salvation.

b. The Gospel is our source of

transformation.

GOD’S PLAN FOR THE PARENTS AND THE KIDS

PARENTS

1. God givesyou children by

His grace.

2. God givesyou children for

His glory.

3. God gives you children as blessing from

the Lord.

3 Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from Him.

PSALM 127:3

The goal of biblical parenting

is NOT to help your children:

- Get a great education- Be a great athlete- Go on great dates- Have a great career- Makes great money

The goal of biblical parenting

is to help your children:

- Accomplish a great commission

COMMANDS FOR PARENTS

1. INSTRUCT YOUR CHILDREN SO THEY KNOW THE WORD.

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction

and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

PROVERBS 1:8

a. We must have a verbal commitment to the WORD

in our homes.

b. We must have a visible commitment to the WORD

in our homes.

2. TRAIN YOUR CHILDREN SO THEY KNOW THE

WORD.

a. Our children will NOT be what they cannot see.

6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even

when they are old they will not turn from it.

PROVERBS 22:6

b. BOTH PARENTS are to train their children.

c. DISCIPLINE your children so they model

the WORD.

13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;

if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.

14 Punish them with the rodand save them from death.

PROVERBS 23:13-14

6 because the Lord disciplines the one He loves,

and He chastens everyone He accepts as His son.

HEBREWS 12:6

3. DISCIPLINE FAILS WHEN PARENTS

DISAGREE.

4. FAVORITISM MUST BE AVOIDED.

A CAUTION FOR PARENTS

Discipline your children with love that leads them toward GOD, NOT with anger that leads them

away from GOD.

NOW Parents we have an awesome PRIVILEGE …

The purpose of parental discipline is to help children

grow, not to exasperate and provoke them to anger

or discouragement.

21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will

become discouraged.

COLOSSIANS 3:21

Dorothy Law Nolte once wrote down these thoughts …

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to

condemn.

If a child lives with hostility, he learns to

fight.

If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to

be shy.

If a child lives with shame, he learns to

feel guilty.

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to

be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement,

he learns confidence.

If a child lives with praise, he learns to

appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness, he learns

justice.

If a child lives with security, he learns to

have faith.

If a child lives with approval, he learns to

like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and

friendship, he learns to find love in the world.

CONCLUSION

Our homes become so spiritually powerful when:

· Wives SUBMIT to their husbands, and husbands

LOVE their wives.

· Children OBEY their parents.

· There’s success, peace, and powerful witness.
