Week2

Matthew 28:18-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "Allauthority in heaven and on earth has beengiven tome.19 Therefore go and make disciples of allnations, baptizing them in the name of theFather and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20 and teaching them to obey everything Ihave commanded you. And surely I amwithyou always, to the very end of the age."

1. THE

DEFINITION

OF DISCIPLESHIP

THE WORD DISCIPLE

Literally means a learner

THE GOAL OF A DISCIPLE

Is to be like his or her

teacher

Luke 6:40

40 A student is not above his teacher, buteveryone who is fully trained will be like histeacher.(NIV)

Romans 8:29

29 For those God foreknew he alsopredestined to be conformed to the likenessof his Son, that he might be the firstbornamongmany brothers.(NIV)

2. THE

MARKS

OF DISCIPLESHIP

ABIDES IN JESUS' WORDS

John 8:31

31 To the Jews who had believed him,Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.(NIV)

Matthew 7:21-27

21 "Not everyone who says to me, `Lord,Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of myFather who is in heaven.22 Many will say to me on that day,`Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in yourname, and in your name drive outdemons and perform many miracles?'

Matthew 7:21-27

23 Then I will tell them plainly, `I neverknew you. Away from me, youevildoers!'24 "Therefore everyone who hears thesewords of mine and puts them intopractice is like a wise man who built hishouse on the rock.

Matthew 7:21-27

25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat againstthat house; yet it did not fall, because ithad its foundation on the rock.26But everyone who hears these words ofmine and does not put them intopractice is like a foolish man who builthis house on sand.

Matthew 7:21-27

27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat againstthat house, and it fell with a great crash."

James 1:21-25

21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth andthe evil that is so prevalent and humblyaccept the word planted in you, whichcan save you.22Do not merely listen to the word, andso deceive yourselves. Do what it says.23 Anyone who listens to the word butdoes not do what it says is like a manwho looks at his face in a mirror and,

James 1:21-25

24 and, after looking at himself, goesaway and immediately forgets what helooks like.25 But the man who looks intently intothe perfect law that gives freedom, andcontinues to do this, not forgetting whathe has heard, but doing it--he will beblessed in what he does.

LOVES THE BRETHREN

John 13:34-35

34 "A new command I give you: Love oneanother. As I have loved you, so youmust love one another.35By this all men will know that you aremy disciples, if you love one another."

BEARS MUCH FRUIT

John 15:8

8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bearmuch fruit, showing yourselves to be mydisciples.(NIV)

John 15:1-2

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is thegardener.2 He cuts off every branch in me that bearsno fruit, while every branch that does bearfruit he prunes so that it will be even morefruitful.

3. THE

COST

OF DISCIPLESHIP

JESUS MUST COME FIRST

Luke 14:25-26

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:26 "If anyone comes to me and does nothate his father and mother, his wife andchildren, his brothers and sisters--yes,even his own life--he cannot be mydisciple.(NIV)

Matthew 10:34-37

34 "Do not suppose that I have come tobring peace to the earth. I did not cometo bring peace, but a sword.35 For I have come to turn "`a managainst his father, a daughter againsther mother,36 a daughter-in-law against hermother-in-law-- a man's enemies will bethe members of his own household.'

Matthew 10:34-37

37 "Anyone who loves his father or mothermore than me is not worthy of me;anyone who loves his son or daughtermore than me is not worthy of me;(NIV)

Luke 9:23-25

23 Then he said to them all: "If anyonewould come after me, he must denyhimself and take up his cross daily andfollow me.24 For whoever wants to save his life willlose it, but whoever loses his life for mewill save it.25What good is it for a man to gain thewhole world, and yet lose or forfeit hisvery self?(NIV)

WILLING TO SUFFER FOR JESUS

Luke 14:28-33

28 "Suppose one of you wants to build atower. Will he not first sit down andestimate the cost to see if he has enoughmoney to complete it?29 For if he lays the foundation and is notable to finish it, everyone who sees it willridicule him,30 saying, `This fellow began to build andwas not able to finish.'

Luke 14:28-33

31 "Or suppose a king is about to go towar against another king. Will he notfirst sit down and consider whether he isable with ten thousand men to opposethe one coming against him with twentythousand?32 If he is not able, he will send adelegation while the other is still a longway off and will ask for terms of peace.

Luke 14:28-33

33 In the same way, any of you who doesnot give up everything he has cannot bemy disciple.(NIV)

FORSAKING ALL TO FOLLOW JESUS

Matthew 10:34-37

37 "Anyone who loves his father or mothermore than me is not worthy of me;anyone who loves his son or daughtermore than me is not worthy of me;(NIV)

MARK 10:28-30

30 will fail to receive a hundred times asmuch in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children andfields—along with persecutions—and inthe age to come eternal life.

5. THE

BEGINNING

OF DISCIPLESHIP

INVOLVES BAPTISM

MATTHEW 28:19

19 Therefore go and make disciples of allnations, baptizing them in the name ofthe Father and of the Son and of theHoly Spirit,

ACTS 2:38

38 Peter replied, “Repent and bebaptized, every one of you, in the nameof Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of yoursins. And you will receive the gift of theHoly Spirit.

ACTS 22:16

16 And now what are you waiting for?Get up, be baptized and wash your sinsaway, calling on his name.’

ROMANS 6:3-4

3 Or don’t you know that all of us whowere baptized into Christ Jesus werebaptized into his death?4 We were therefore buried with himthrough baptism into death in orderthat, just as Christ was raised from thedead through the glory of the Father, wetoo may live a new life.

GALATIANS 3:27

27 for all of you who were baptized intoChrist have clothed yourselves withChrist.

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

An act of submission which must be preceded by faith in Jesus and repentance for our

sins.

ACTS 2:36-38

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured ofthis: God has made this Jesus, whom youcrucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

37 When the people heard this, they werecut to the heart and said to Peter andthe other apostles, “Brothers, what shallwe do?”

ACTS 2:36-38

38 Peter replied, “Repent and bebaptized, every one of you, in the nameof Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of yoursins. And you will receive the gift of theHoly Spirit.

ACTS 8:36-37

36 As they travelled along the road, theycame to some water and the eunuchsaid, “Look, here is water. What canstand in the way of my being baptized?”37 Philip said, “If you believe with all yourheart, you may.” The eunuch answered,“I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son ofGod.”

An act of submission which involves a burial in water, in which one then rises to walk

in newness of life through the power of God.

ACTS 8:38

38 And he gave orders to stop thechariot. Then both Philip and the eunuchwent down into the water and Philipbaptized him.

COLOSSIANS 2:12

12 having been buried with him inbaptism, in which you were also raisedwith him through your faith in theworking of God, who raised him fromthe dead.

Our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus.

ACTS 22:16

16 And now what are you waiting for? Getup, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’

EPHESIANS 5:25-27

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christloved the church and gave himself up for her26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by thewashing with water through the word,27 and to present her to himself as a radiantchurch, without stain or wrinkle or any otherblemish, but holy and blameless.

We are regenerated and renewed by the Spirit of God so we can now live for God!

Titus 3:5-6

5 he saved us, not because of righteousthings we had done, but because of hismercy. He saved us through thewashing of rebirth and renewal by theHoly Spirit,6 whom he poured out on us generouslythrough Jesus Christ our Savior,

It is truly a rebirth involving both water and the Spirit.

JOHN 3:5

5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you,no one can enter the kingdom of Godunless they are born of water and theSpirit.

INCLUDES FURTHER TEACHING, OBEDIENCE

MATTHEW 28:20

20 and teaching them to obeyeverything I have commanded you.And surely I am with you always, tothe very end of the age.”

For Jesus clearly states:• We are to be taught

(to be learners)• We are to observe

(to be adherents or doers)

Thus we embark on a life devoted to learning and

doing all Jesus commanded!

CONCLUSION

Only those scripturally baptized and demonstrating

the marks of discipleship, despite the costs, can truly be

called disciples of Jesus!

Only they can look forward to the rewards of

discipleship, and take comfort in Jesus' promise:

MATTHEW 28:20

20 "and lo, I am with you always, evento the end of the age"
