This past January, Polarisintroduced a whole newclass of side-by-side with theRZR XP 900. Building off ofthe launch, Polaris isintroducing another extremeperformance side-by-side to

the family, the RZR XP 4 900. This launch will bring Xtremeperformance for four while delivering the ultimate combination ofpower, suspension and agility found in the entire RZR family.

The RZR XP 4 900 is the most-capable, highest-powered,multi-passenger side-by-side with the longest wheelbasemaking it the ultimate performance vehicle in the market place. The vehicle has many of the same attributes as the RZR XP 900;ProStar 900 Twin engine, 3-Link Trailing Arm Independent RearSuspension (IRS) with 12.5 in/31.8 cm of ground clearance and14 in/35.6 cm of travel, On-Demand True All-Wheel Drive and lowcenter of gravity for unmatched cornering; with a class-leading107 in/271.8 cm of wheelbase to not only accommodate twomore passengers, but also provide the smoothest ride availableon a high-performance side-by-side

The ultimate combination of power, suspension and agilitystarts with power. At the heart of the RZR XP 4 900 is the 88horsepower ProStar 900 Twin EFI engine that was builtspecifically for an extreme-performance side-by-side and firstfound in the RZR XP 900. The engine features Dual OverHeadCams (DOHC), four big valves per cylinder and dual throttlebodies located close to the intake valves for fast throttleresponse and groundbreaking acceleration.

For razor-sharp agility, RZR XP 4 900 features a low center ofgravity for the ultimate ride over rough terrain. The engine-behind-the-seat design and strategically-placed key

components optimize vehicle weight distribution deliveringextreme, razor-sharp agility and performance, while the race-inspired rear suspension maximizes traction and power in thecorners. To provide precise cornering, the suspensions radiusrods extend deep into the wheel hubs and feature an uneven linkgeometry that optimizes camber. This allows the tires to lean intothe corner through the suspension travel, and plant more tiresurface on the ground for maximum control. For added agility,Polaris will have a limited edition RZR XP 4 900 with electronicpower steering for added control and less rider fatigue in therough stuff.

In creating the first high-performance, four-seat side-by-side,Polaris paid close attention to ergonomics. Similar to its familymembers, the RZR XP 4 900 has class-leading tilt steering offering10 in/25.4 cm of range and a heel pocket for unmatched throttlecontrol. The front passenger will enjoy an adjustable frontpassenger handrail, while the rear passengers have ample amountof head-room and a rear passenger handrail. Similar to the frontpassengers, rear passengers also have a 12-volt plug in and twocup holders. All four bucket seats are interchangeable and offer 4in/10.2 cm of front-to-rear adjustability making it easy to switchdrivers. For safety, RZR XP 4 900 has four side protective nets anda certified roll-over protective structure (ROPS).

This smooth ride is going to be made possible with 2.5 WalkerEvans shock absorbers on the rear. These are the largest, mosthigh tech shocks to be offered on a stock UTV to date. Theselarger bodied shocks will provide 35% more piston surface andoil capacity, which in turn leads to less heat, shock fatigue andsuspension fading.

ATV World will be off to Parker, AZ in January to give thisawesome new machine the full shake down. Look for a fullreview in the next issue.

    TIPS& TRICKS BY NICK NELSON

  • With the cost of everything continuallyincreasing, its no wonder that wetry to make do with what we have,or adapt what we have to make it work inthe capacity we want it to. It may be thefact that what we want something to donow, wasnt available when it wasoriginally purchased. It may be the factthat adapting something to do a differentjob is the cheapest course of action. Itmay be that there is a concern of howlegal, legitimate or safe something is.

By now you are probably wonderingwhat the heck we are talking about.

What this is alluding to is the popularconversion of a basic, single seat ATVwith a passenger seat, compared to a truetwo up machine.

Lets take a few minutes and look at a 2-upconversion verses a production 2-up ATV.

From a legal point of view, a true 2-upmachine cannot travel on the roadway,(other than crossing it ) even if thesecond seat is removed (if this option isavailable) and there is only one personon the ATV. The law states that only ATVsdesigned for single riders meet therequirements of the province. This iscompared to a single seat conversionthat you cannot travel or cross a roadwhile carrying a passenger. You canhowever, drive as a single person downthe road legally.

From a safety perspective, there are afew more things to consider. First, letslook at the 2-up production machine. The engineers have speci f ical lydesigned this vehicle to be operatedwhile carrying either a single person oroperator and passenger. The specificsconsidered are things like center ofgravity of the vehicle and the weightdistribution points in relation to therear axle centerline.

Center of gravity in most cases issimply a concern of keeping most of theweight in the chassis as low as possible, therefore making it more stable and lesslikely to roll over sideways. By designingan ATV from the ground up as a 2-upapplication, the engineer will try tocompensate through design features, thefact that a passenger will be sitting highon the chassis, (on the seat) and therebychanging the center of gravity duringoperation. Even with these designsincorporated into the vehicle, you want tobe aware that the operatingcharacteristics of the machine will bedifferent with a passenger on board.

By looking at weight distributionpoints in relation to the rear axlecenterline, this will prevent the front endfrom wheeling and possibly going overbackwards. When looking at a production2-up, you will notice that the passengerwill be seated slightly ahead of the rear

axle centerline. This keeps the extraweight forward towards the front andthereby make it more difficult (althoughnot impossible) for the front end to lift, and help to prevent the ATV from goingover backwards. This is simply achievedby increasing the wheelbase length of theATV over that of its single seat cousin. This longer wheelbase can have somemanoeuvrability concerns, but thesecould be forgiven by an inherent friendlierride characteristic. The seat position andmounting, along with the passenger armrests and foot holds are generally morestable and ergonomic. Heck, somemanufacturers even add specialsuspension to the passenger seat as acreature comfort for those rides that turninto long days.

When comparing a 2-up conversion, wemust remember that this ATV wasdesigned specifically as a single personmachine. That is why (and this statementcould be wrong) you do not find any OEMmanufactured accessory seats. I dontknow of any manufacturer that evenendorses the installation of a passengerseat. This leaves a vast array ofaftermarket will fit seats to choosefrom. Now dont get me wrong, there aresome very good aftermarket seatsavailable. In fact, both my ATVs areequipped with such seats. Price willdictate the quality of the seat, and a weebit of research to find the best fit for yourATV will be required. This next part is

crucial; you want to pay close attention toyour instructions when mounting. Notonly for ensuring the proper location, butalso the securement of the seat to theATV. You may even want to reinforce themounting hardware supplied in yourinstallation kit. I say this after witnessinga seat coming off an ATV, (with thepassenger still seated in it) due to themounting hardware pulling through the

base of the seat, even though it wasproperly installed. After witnessing this, Ipromptly reinforced both my seatmountings with plates.

Even if the installation is perfect, youwill still have to contend with center ofgravity concerns, and especially theweight distribution points in referenceto the centerline of the rear axle.Generally, when you add an aftermarket

seat, it is installed on the rear carrier andwill elevate the center of gravity when apassenger is on board, adversely affectingstability. The next concern is that in mostcases, the passengers weight will be onor behind the rear axle centerline. Thisleverage will cause a light front axleweight and will exaggerate the reason thefront end may lift, resulting in the ATVgoing over backwards on even a slightuphill situation. This is some importantfood for thought.

The previously mentioned informationis primarily provided to assist inevaluating the pros and cons of twodifferent vehicles, with respect to a veryspecific application. Regardless of design,it is important to know the limitations ofyour specific ATV.

After having the opportunity to rideboth types of ATVs, (along with apassenger) and since I primarily ride off-road with very limited road travel, usuallywith a passenger, my next purchase mostlikely will be a production 2-up ATV.

But .. until I convince my Wife that atrue 2-up ATV is more important thanhardwood flooring, you will find me outand about, enjoying all that the East ParrySound and Nipissing Districts have tooffer on my 2-up conversion.

The placement of this aftermarket seat positions the passenger's weight well behind the rear axlecenterline. With the right conditions, this could cause the ATV to go over backwards quit easily.

    HOWHow-To with ATV WORLD

START WITH A CLEAN MACHINEStart with a clean machine. Remove the seats, front hood andstorage container. For 09-10 models, you will also have toremove the shift knob and center console. Our XP unit had anSSV center subwoofer pod and this had to be removed as well.

ROTATE THE STEERING WHEEL Rotate the steering wheel to a position that allows you access tothe lower steering shaft retaining bolt. You can access this boltfrom the driver side wheel well, or on the XP version you can getto it through the front hood opening. Remove bolt and discard asa new bolt is supplied with the kit.

3 4REMOVE THE STEERING WHEELPop the center plug out with a flat screwdriver and remove thelarge nut that is behind it. With your knee behind the wheelapplying outward force, strike the center of the steering shaft witha brass drift. The outward force and shock will break the wheelloose so that you can remove it. If you dont have a large brassdrift, you can install the nut part way onto the shaft, using it toprotect the threads while you hit it with a hammer and punch.

REMOVE THE STEERING PIVOT Remove the steering pivot by disconnecting the tilt cylinder andremoving the side pivot bolts. Retain all hardware and payattention to the order of washers and spacers for reassemblypurposes. Remove the lower steering shaft from the steering rackand pull it through the floor into the drivers compartment. Removethe four nuts that retain the throttle and brake assembly.

INSTALLING POWER STEERINGON A POLARIS RZR

Power Steering is a revolutionary new addition to the sport UTV market.Light, effortless steering at slower speeds is coupled with steering stabilizer-like control of negative feedback to the steering wheel. With the addition ofpower steering, gone is the feeling of having the wheel ripped from yourhands when you catch that tree root, rain rut or rock. With all of the advan-tages, you would think that every UTV would come with EPS, but they dont.

Last years Robby Gordon version of the RZR4 came with Polaris EPS,but the XP and standard models were skipped over or were they?

Polaris recently released a complete bolt-on power steering kit for the09-11 RZR and 11-12 RZR XP models. The Polaris power steering kit isthe same one found on the Robby Gordon RZR4, and to our surprise, our2011 XP was already wired for it.

INSTALL BRACKETInstall the supplied bracket onto the EPS motor as shown. Payattention to the direction that the bracket mounts. Torque allfour supplied 10mm bolts to 20-24 foot pounds. Test fit thatthe splined shaft end slides onto the EPS shaft when lined upcorrectly. They should both slide on easily without force. If theydo not, open the split part up slightly with a large screwdriver.Slide the new supplied lower shaft through the floor and ontosteering rack splines. Be sure to put the end that takes a 10mmbolt through the floor and onto the steering rack splines. Installthe new M10 retaining bolt and nut.

INSTALL THE EPS UNITCarefully install the EPS unit into the lower steering shaft. Payattention to the skip tooth on the EPS shaft, as this will line upwith the split in the steering shaft. DO NOT STRIKE THESHAFT DURING INSTALLATION AS PERMENEANT DAMAGETO EPS MOTOR CAN OCCUR. Try using a sharpie to clearlymark the skip tooth on the shaft, as you will be installing itstanding on your head, underneath the dash of the car. Once youslide the EPS unit into the shaft, bolt the bracket to the fourthrottle/brake mounting studs, using the nuts that you removedin step four.

7 8PLUG IT INTorque the M10 joint hardware to 28-32 ft. lbs. and the M8upper joint bolt to 15-19 ft. lbs. Connect the power steeringharness connections to the mating connectors on the powersteering motor. Our 2011 XP had the EPS connectorsalready built into the main wiring harness. A 2012 XP hasthe plugs under the dash, but you will need to use asupplied sub harness. 09-10 RZR will require theinstallation of another harness that goes from battery tomultiple other plugs under the dash, and then to the EPSunit. This harness is supplied from Polaris, along withcomplete instructions on hooking it up.

INSTALL UPPER STEERING SHAFTInstall upper steering shaft onto the EPS motor, being sure toalign skip tooth with split in shaft knuckle. Once again, components should slide together easily. Do Not Strikecomponents, as damage can occur to EPS motor. Reinstall thesteering pivot assembly, being sure that all spacers and washersare installed on the new shaft just as they were removed.Straighten the wheels and install the steering wheel. Torque 6mupper shaft retaining bolt to 12-14 ft. lbs. Install suppliedplastic cover over EPS motor and reinstall your seats.

Test drive your RZR with caution to make sure everythingis working properly, and that it does not pull to onedirection or the other. Enjoy your new power steering.

Finally, the moment the staff at ATV World had beenlonging for had arrived; our first flog behind thewheel. By now, we had poured over the technicaldetails and specifications of the bright green beast like a10-year-old would a Christmas catalog. When I got the invite to meet up with theArctic Cat guys and drive the new Wildcat1000i HO, I quickly accepted, asking whereI would be heading. To my surprise theywere debuting their new sport UTV in thehigh desert OHV area of Barstow, California.Barstow is less than 100 miles away frommy current stomping grounds, and home tocountless off-road races every year. Knownfor intense, trophy truck whoops, and rockyterrain, the Barstow desert courses arealways a true test of man and machine.

Wildcat pictures and info had beencirculating around the net for a while, andthe rumors of it being a RZR killer wereflying high. Looking purely at thenumbers, the RZR XP might have itshands full, and we couldnt wait to findout. With a 951cc engine, 17 inches offront wheel travel, and 18 inches in therear, Arctic Cat meant business and theWildcat has the potential to eat whoopsand rough terrain for breakfast.

Getting into the Wildcat for a quick looparound camp, the ultra-light low speedsteering reminds you how awesome powersteering is on a UTV. The first drive alsoleaves you wondering why everymanufacturer does not include EPS onevery UTV.

I personally have a ton of seat time inthe RZR XP, and couldnt wait to getbehind the wheel of the Wildcat for acomparison. Right from the start, ArcticCat gets props for having factory doors. They look cool, and more importantly, theywill keep occupants feet and legs safely inthe vehicle. The doors latch well, appearto be lightweight, and exhibit minimalrattle. Doors like these should be the rule, not the exception in the sport UTV market.

HAMMER TIMEWith considerably more travel and over

10-inches of additional wheelbase, theArctic Cat should dominate the field in deepwhoops. And it does! Arctic Cat picked theperfect venue in Barstow as the Wildcat1000 is a whoop-swallowing animal. TheWildcat has the wheel travel to take on thedeep ones, and the extra long wheelbaseallows it to stay level and straight, whetherskipping over the tops, or pounding out theones that are too big to top.

Even though the Wildcat has moretravel than the XP, its seat height is lower

so you feel very stable and planted to theground. The Wildcats shock valvingseems to work better the more you abuseit. While fairly plush in the initial strokefor the smaller bumps, it really shineswhen you hammer it into the big stuff.Big G-outs are soaked up with authority;tons of travel and wheelbase allow the carto soak up unexpected big hits and stillstay straight, level, and in control.

During our photo-shoot, repeatedlyhammering the Wildcat through a stretchof nearly waist deep whoops really showedwhat the Wildcat was made of. Speedsand confidence grew simultaneously as we

Equal length header pipes snake their way from the bigbore V-twin and dump the burnt charge into a single,

over-sized exhaust can at the rear of the vehicle.

Forward latching doors are standard on the Wildcat. No funky andmessy netting, easy actuation, along with automotive style shoulder

belts with no cinch hardware, gives the Wildcat the best stock cockpitsecurity/safety equipment on the market.

made each pass. This is also wherethe Wildcat showed its firstweakness. Turning the Wildcataround at the end of each passtakes a great deal of space. Itssuper long wheelbase that makes itso great in the whoops also hampersits turning radius a great deal.

Clutching on the Wildcat is alsogeared toward mid to top speedperformance, which also probablyhurts the turning performance. Withpower being directed away from thebottom end, its harder to keep therear wheels loose to drift aroundcorners. I truly believe aftermarketclutching will be able to help thissituation, while still keeping plentyof usable top speed.

So is the Wildcat 1000i an XPkiller? With limited ride time on itas of yet, I would have to say no. Itwill definitely eat it up in repeateddeep whoops, but as tested, thestock XP should run circles around

it in tighter terrain. In stock form, the Wildcat pushes in the corners, and is a little spongy, but handlesgreat in rough terrain. Massivetravel and wheelbase should makeit the vehicle of choice for thisyears King of the Hammers race, and it will definitely be a force to bereckoned with in the Desert Racingscene. The Wildcat should also havethe potential to be a winneranywhere it competes, with theproper set up.

To truly answer, we cant wait toget our hands on a test unit for atrue head to head shootout in thenear future. We will be running themhead to head in the dunes, thedesert, and at a WORCS type coursefor some real answers. The Wildcat1000i is definitely going to be a bigseller/performer out on the westcoast. It is definitely going to becool to see a new competitive playerout in the desert and dune scene.

I couldnt help but think back to myvery first ride aboard an Arctic Cat ATV asI geared up to ride the all-new Wildcat inBarstow, California. It was in the late fallof 1995, somewhere in the foothills of theTennessee Blue Ridge Mountains that Iattended the North American press launchof the companys first ever ATV; theBearcat 454. Too young and perhaps moreaccurately, too green to recognize it atthe time, the launch was one of incredibleimportance and significance for the smallsnowmobile company from northernMinnesota.

Those same feelings now surrounded theWildcat encampment in the Mojave Desert.Much has changed in the off-road marketsince Arctic Cat joined the party in 1996;ATV industry sales have fallen on hardtimes and the side-by-side market hasexperienced an explosion of growth led byCats arch nemesis, Polaris with both theirutility based Ranger line-up and morerecently, their pure sport RZR models.Arctic Cat joined the UTV ranks in 2006with a me-too model that satisfiedexisting Arctic Cat faithful, but did little to

notice of a viable option to the currentlone wolf RZR XP. The Wildcat is fast, extremely capable in the worst terrain, and in true Cat form, brazenly outspokenof its intent. This was the Arctic Catcompany I had come to know in thesnowmobile industry since I was firstintroduced to the brand in the early 1970s,and now that personality had finallysurfaced under the warm desert sun.

EXUDES EXTREMETheres little about the Wildcat that

doesnt speak to the capabilities ofstretched and long-legged, sport focusedside-by-side. Built on an exoskeletonchassis, the staggering suspension travel, ground clearance, wheelbase, and bore ofthe V-twin motor are all brash chunks ofengineering evidence of both the vehiclesintent and capabilities.

The standard reverse hinged doors makeentering and exiting the Wildcat fluid, andcoupled to an H framed roll cage thateliminates the perimeter bar directly abovethe entry point, the new Cat is perhaps theeasiest of all sport UTVs to slip into andout of. Once settled in, a high backed andwell-bolstered seat hugs the pilot andoccupant, more so than the somewhatflat buckets found on the target RZR.The overall seating position feels muchlower and more planted than the RZR.Legroom and pedal spacing however, isperhaps marginally better, a complaintassociated with all side-by-side vehiclesfor those pilots with long legs and big-soled feet. An adjustable steering wheeland easy to actuate center mountedshifter, caps off the cockpit ergonomics.

No doubt the Barstow area was selected

for the Wildcat first ride for its wide-openruns and seemingly never-ending series oflarge, 3 to 4 foot whoops. A test bedhaven for off-road trucks, including mega-dollar trophy trucks, the never-ending trainof trucks testing in this area creates themassive whoops. With its stretched 90-inch wheelbase, which as Nick pointed outis 10-inches greater than the RZR XP, theWildcat can tame the uneven cadence oflarge rollers and sharp edged chop withamazing stability. The combination ofwheelbase, huge travel range, and well-

calibrated Walker Evans shocks makes theWildcat the most adept big bump side-by-side on the market, period.

The near 1000 cube motor produces adamn sexy exhaust note as spent fumesexit via a ceramic coated, dual head pipeto a single, oversized, rear exit can. At fullstomp, we experienced top speeds near72mph; very much in line with the RZRXP. However, top speed clutchingsacrificed bottom end grunt. A sluggishbackshift and the longer wheelbase gavethe Wildcat a more docile feel upon exiting

    GONE WILD ARCTIC CAT WILDCAT

XP, or even the RZR-S were introduced. Wesaw the industry split happening between

the two categories and we (Arctic Cat) knewwe wanted to go to the extreme if we

entered the sport side of the business.

The 5-link rear suspension was developed in order to allow the Wildcat to deliver its insanesuspension travel numbers. According the Cat engineers, such a system allows them to better control

corners, or looking to lighten the front endupon entering trail chop. While ultraaggressive riders may crave more, theclutching package makes the over-the-topcapabilities of the Wildcat more applicableto a wide range of riders and terrain, beyond the wide-open desert speeds weexperienced in Barstow.

A steering rack coupled to electronicpower steering gave the Wildcat extremelypredictable and positive steering traits.

The speed sensitive assist was never toolittle or too much, and the bump steerappeared well controlled. Initial turn-inwas precise and rarely did we over-steerupon entrance, thereby requiring counter-steer past the apex. Where go-fast desertracers like Nick would like to see both aquicker ratio and tighter radius, the morerelaxed steering response should onceagain make the Wildcat moreapproachable to a broader scope of riders,

and make for a well mannered trailmachine, save the most technical andtightly twisted trails.

A 40/60 front to rear weight balancecontributes to the straight-line stability andnear flat in-flight characteristics exhibited.Compared to the stock RZR XP, which hasa tendency to unload the rear axle and landnose first, the Wildcat delivered near flatflight on most launch points.

The initial target of the Wildcat isclearly the wide-open desert and dunes ofthe southwestern United States. In fact, while we were in Barstow, members of theArctic Cat sales force were busy seekingout dealerships and key influencers in thisregion. But while this area of the countryis key to set the stage, its the rest ofNorth America that will determine the bigpicture success of the Wildcat.

While I cant help but believe a tighterturning radius and shrunken vehicledimensions will help broaden the appealof the Wildcat in more heavily wooded andtechnical terrain locales, the foundation ofthe Wildcat is truly a homerun. Futurevariants, regardless of the size, will bebased upon a chassis and suspension that,by early indications, should be a winnerboth on the race track and off it.

Both utilize twincylinder designs to generate big numberenergy at the crank, with Polaris doing soin a parallel design, and Can-Am goingthe V-Twin route. While Polaris waselusive on the specifics, including realworld numbers, the new 2012 850 is saidto produce more of the powerful stuff, with up to a 20% boost at bottom end forimproved off-the-line acceleration.Marketing hyperbole aside, most thirdparty sources weve spoken to have thenew 850 pegged at or near 76 ponies atthe crank. Thats up slightly from aprevious low 70s mark.

The Outlander 1000 rumbles into2012 with an all-new 976cc Rotaxsecured into a revised frame. With moredisplacement, the Rotax expectedly putsforth more power. According to Can-Am,the new mill should spool to 82-horsepower, with a broad torque curve tocompliment. While the number is onlyslightly more on paper, the Outlander is abeast off the line compared to the Polaris. The front tires lurch skyward whenstabbing the throttle, and on loose terrain, the big full liter ride goes from angry tohostile; spitting rocks, limbs, and smallunsuspecting critters into its wake.

The Polaris comes across as morerefined in power delivery, with a smoothidle and linear delivery. Once rolling, itbecomes a dead heat and a toss up for topspeed honors, with both speedos showingan indicated 74mph, give or take.

Verdict: Outlander 1000 XT while thePolaris was less harsh in its delivery, thebig block staccato exhaust note and in yourface, out of the hole launch of the Can-Amwas simply too damn fun to ignore.

HANDLINGIn a category this broad, we have to

admit that in some ways we onlyscratched the surface of all the differenttypes of terrain and situations one couldencounter. Still, we managed to click off100-plus-miles and in the process, traversed a variety of trail conditions, including some end of the day utilitysituations while repairing tree stands inpreparation for the forthcoming firearmdeer season.

Both the Polaris and the Can-Amfeature electronic power steering withspeed sensitive assistance that varies inrelationship to speed. The Can-Am systemhowever, takes that technology a stepfurther with three separate selectablelevels of steering assistance (minimum, medium, or maximum). Dubbed Tri-Mode

Dynamic Power Steering, (DPS) and onlyavailable on the XT packaged version, thesystem employs a large 50-amp motorand quick response sensors to minimizesteering response times.

Both quads featured double A-arm front

In order to control the rumble of the big 1000 V-twin,Can-Am engineers mounted an oversize silencer at thefinal exit point for the spent charge. While it may look

utilitarian, the exhaust note is sweet music.

The independent rear suspension foundon the Polaris is extremely compliant, soaking up even small trail debris, yet

able to accommodate an oversized load.

Dubbed the Trailing Torsional Independent(TTI) rear suspension, the simple trailing linkdesign with sway bar is amazingly simple, and

touts far fewer moving parts and links thanother independent rear designs.

suspensions, with the Polaris utilizing amulti link rear, and the Can-Am stroking amuch simpler appearing trailing arm set-up.

Despite the sophisticated powersteering system found on the Can-Am, wefound it still required more effort in tightwooded trails in comparison to thePolaris. While handling was more precisewith the Outlander, especially upon initialturn-in, the easy effort and true trackingof the Polaris from corner apex throughexit, made the Polaris in many ways, much easier to ride.

Verdict: Sportsman XP 850 HO bothATVs were light footed in the tight trails, given their size and might, but the Polariswas the cream puff to the Can-Am hardroll, and after 50 miles of wooded trails, the Polaris became the bike of choice dueto its easy to ride nature.

    COMFORTWhen Detroit was building ground

pounding muscle cars in the 1960s andearly 1970s, comfort was a word that wasrarely uttered in conjunction with thosehigh-powered, point and shoot blocks ofAmerican iron. Such is not the case in thebig bore ATV world. While significantpower lurks between the floorboards, boththe Sportsman 850 and Outlander 1000can serve up a ride that is as comfortableas it is speedy.

Staying true to its easy and relaxeddemeanor, the Sportsman delivered a ridethat was exceedingly plush. In small chopor rocky sections of trail, the Sportsmanshined, isolating the rider from theterrain. As speeds increased, the bigRoseau buggy just got better.

Where the Polaris was plush, theOutlander delivered a ride that was morefitted to the situation. While never jarringor harsh, the aggressive performance of

the Canadian quad was matched with aride quality that leaned more towardsperformance versus the overstuffed chairfeel of the Polaris.

Verd ic t : Sportsman XP 850 HO Ifyoure looking for a more precise andsporty ride, then the Outlander is thebetter option. However, if you have visionsof throwing a leg over a Stay PuftMarshmallow, the Polaris gets the nod.

ERGONOMICSHow a quad fits plays such an

important role in virtually every otherattribute of a vehicle, that its hard tobelieve that it was often a designafterthought during the early days of the

ATV industry. Today, ergonomics is oftenconsidered one of the most importantmeasurements of customer satisfactionwith a vehicle.

From handlebar width and controls, toseat shape and storage racks, ergonomicsis best described as how well humanelements interact with the comfort andfunctional designs of a vehicle. Get it rightand an ATV feels natural and transparentto the rider. Get it wrong, and the vehiclecan be nothing short of awkward.

Today its rare to find an ATV thatmisses the ergonomic mark completely.More often, its how adaptable a vehicle isto different size riders and their ridingstyles that separate an ergonomichomerun from a foul ball.

Some call it a boat cushion, but we call it damncomfortable. The wide and well-padded seat is

perfect for long days in the saddle.

We found the gear selector on theOutlander to be too small and finicky. The detents on the cowl and within

the transmission itself are difficult tosecure, and makes quick shifts from

    forward to reverse difficult.

Found only on the XT package, the wraparound front and rear bumpers give the

Outlander a level of toughness both in looksand in the woods. The plastic end caps, whilestylish, offer no protection and were jettisoned

quickly once we hit the woods (literally).

  • 48 ATV WORLD MAGAZINE

Even with most of our test riderscarrying a frame in excess of 6-feet, wefound both quads to be oversized for ourliking. The Polaris sits tall, with a wideconsole and equally wide seat. Even ourtallest rider felt the Polaris was simply toobig. That gripe, combined with outdatedcontrols, a long throw throttle lever, and abrake lever that was both hard to pull anddelivered little to no feedback, were allknocks against the Roseau breed.

On the flip side, while still large in overall

size, the Outlander touted a more compactworkspace, keeping the distance betweenthe bars, seat bun, and running boards in amore tightly compacted triangle, and thus, more appealing to more riders.

Verdict: Outlander 1000 XT The just rightcockpit, coupled with vastly newer controls, easy and short throw throttle, and a brakelever than could actually communicate whatwas happening at the caliper back to thefingers, gave the Can-Am the win.

While the Polaris controls are dated in form, its hard to argue the function of the all wheeldrive switch. We never question what mode we

were in, even when selecting on the fly.

An oversize rear cargo box touts an easy touse latch and flips down to reveal a deep

    storage compartment.

WORK ETHICDespite being categorized as utility

ATVs, the work side of the equation is oftenoverlooked, as manufacturers, media types,

and customers alike tend to fixate on themore glamorous elements of power andhandling. Yet, when the glory of a spiritedtrail romp is over, many ATVs and theirowners still find themselves overburdenedwith gear and tools, and puttering about atjust above walking speeds.

While the bulk of our time was spent onthe trails, we found ourselves in thewaning hours of sunlight with loadedracks and a string of deer stands needingrepair.

Low speed maneuvers with both unitsare at times, a challenge. With so muchpower on tap, gradual and smooth clutchengagement requires a deft touch on thethrottle. However, with low gear engaged, keeping the pace on par with a snail issurprisingly, easily achievable.

In low speed maneuvers the Polariswas the better companion, thanks to amore fluid shift lever with easy to finddetents, and buttery smooth powersteering. However, the Outlander provedthe better of the two when securing aload. While the Polaris featured anintegrated front storage box, we frownedon the small size of the box, along withits smooth top surface and poor tie-downsupports.

The rear rack of the Sportsman featuresthese stylish and integrated tie-down points. They work well until the load is oversized and

    ratchet straps come into play.

The flip-top front box on the Sportsmanoffers up some handy storage, albeit shallow. However, the water resistant lid reduces the

    functionality of the front rack.

A standard skid plate runs the entirelength of the Outlander, protecting theall-new Surrounding Spar Technology

    (SST) chassis from debris.

Verdict: Sportsman XP 850 HO Thesmooth shifting and ability to navigatetight confines with greater precisions givesthe Polaris the edge, but the racks aremarginal at best. While we agree thatcomposite racks will outlast the metalracks of old, todays modern racks aremore about looks and less about function.

SEXY AND I KNOW ITIts often said that beauty is in the eye

of the beholder, and depending uponwhere your brand loyalty lies, the mostappealing quad most likely follows thoselove l ines. Color aside, (both theOutlander and Sportsman XP are availablein rainbow of colors as well as camo) thisis a comparison between a gentleman anda bully.

Wearing the same cut suit as it has forseveral years, the Sportsman is acombination of clean lines and simpletaste. Nothing will shock you and the 14-inch cast wheels look like they camestraight off a 1980s Cadillac. Conversely, the Outlander stands angry, with sharpangular lines, wrap-around bumpers frontand rear, and Smokey and the Bandithoneycomb cast wheels. In many ways, thelooks mirror the demeanor of these bikes.

Verdict: Outlander 1000 XT No manwants to be seen driving a minivan. Whilethe XP looks tough standing solo, it paleswhen the Outlander enters the picture. Itstime for a Sportsman refresh with modernday controls, real bumpers, and machowheels.
