Philosophy Statement
The examination of the human mind, condition, patterns, and behavior are fascinating. I have always been intrigued with analyzing why people do what they do and why some patterns get repeated and others don't.
It began with my own counseling experience when there were problems in my marriage. The time spent in counseling was not able to save my marriage but helped me as an individual. I enjoyed the process associated with counseling and the enlightenment it brought to me. I had the privilege of participating in group sessions where the rewards of honesty and support have been a strong foundation for human exploration to discover my own self-awareness and achieve clarity on a multitude of life experiences.
It is my goal to work in the fields of marriage and family counseling. Some of the courses that were of particular interest to me were; the psychology of women, psychology of aging, interpersonal
communication, counseling theory, maladaptive behavior and psychology, children and violence, and personality theory, human sexuality, and forensic psychology.
Since going through my personal counseling process, I have found a passion for listening and helping others in times of personal struggle at crisis. This passion also allows me to learn more from each and every person I talk with.
Reflections )
Over twenty years ago I left college to start a family after completing 3 years to start a family with my husband who had just completed law school. Today, I am finishing that which I had started, but with a renewed commitment and appreciation for learning. I am proud to finally make it to the educational goal line, but I also am looking forward to continuing my education and pursue a master’s degree in counseling.
The commitment necessary to complete my bachelor's degree and pursue a master's degree has been challenging at the age of 49 and juggling my job and being a single parent, I've gained so much from the experience that I can't imagine not continuing to learn for the rest of my life. I believe I will always been enrolled in a class, seminar, or continuing education of some kind always. The learning experience has kept me sharp and connected to what is happening in the world today and in touch with the possibilities of what can happen tomorrow.
My strengths up to this point have been my self-discipline, commitment, self-motivation, and maturity that comes with age and experience.
My weaknesses were reflected in getting up to speed to navigate online courses. Halfway to the first two classes navigating became automatic and I was able to troubleshoot or problem solve on the Internet with relative ease.
My goal is to become a licensed marriage and family therapist. I also have an interest in research, personality assessments, and individual and group therapy programs, I have personally been involved in the program can be incredibly helpful and has helped shaped my new career.

Summary
For the past 15 years I have worked primarily as a sales representative for my family's nursery business of 53 years. In addition to sales, 5 of the last 15 years I combined my knowledge of plants with design and worked as a landscape designer for Sun Environments. As this market slowed with the economy, I took the opportunity to go back to school and finish my bachelor's degree in psychology in order to pursue a master's degree to be a licensed therapist. About 18 years ago, I had the luxury and privilege of being able to participate in marriage, individual, and group counseling. The process was so enlightening and positive that I developed a real passion for the counseling process. I enjoy sharing my experiences, listening, and genuinely helping others.
Professionally, my style of counseling is an integrated approach with a particular interest in Gestalt and Person-Centered therapy. This past year I have studied many areas of psychology such as children and violence, counseling theory, marriage and family relations, psychology of women, psychology of aging, personality theory, and negotiation and conflict resolution. It has been my intention to focus on marriage and family counseling, but I have realized a strong interest in psychological issues related to aging. As a counselor, I want to help clients recognize their own strengths, discover what is preventing them from using their resources, and clarify what kind of life they want to live and help them discover their own solutions and recognize their own freedom to act.
