History of the Classon’s• My grandmother Claire
Classon (maiden name of Drury) family came from London in the early 1900’s. They actually have a street named after them which is located in the “wealthy district”, Drury Lane. (Top)
• My grandfather Frank Classon came from Ireland in the early 1900’s. He is part Irish part German. (Bottom)
Struggles• In the early 1900’s
Frank Sr. was confronted with prejudice about him being Irish. He was treated as a second class citizen. He worked very hard to prove differently.
Ruth and Walton Drury had a much easier time when they moved to Annapolis. They were looked down upon by local sailers working out of the harbor which they lived close to.
• Struggles in 1957
Frank and Claire moved themselves and their 3 children from Maryland to Florida. During this move they came upon many hardships:
- company Frank worked for promised $ waiting. But there was none.
- ALL furniture along with clothing was lost in the move
- temporary housing they were promised cost twice as much
Family Value’s
• Striving hard to succeed academically, most of the grandchildren have already received a college degree.
• Spending time together. A strong value within our family is that family comes first.
• We come to each other first, before outside sources when dealing with hardships. For example- loss of family members, divorce, financial matters.
Family Traditions• Christmas- The whole family gathers on
Christmas morning. We open gifts one at a time so that everyone gets to see every gift. Needless to say this can take hours!
• Easter- We have a ham, the older children help in hiding eggs for the little ones. We have 1 Gold egg every year, that comes with a crisp $5 bill inside.
• 4th of July Parade on Park Avenue• Birthdays- We celebrate every birthday
with cake at my grandmothers, regardless of how old you are!
• Other holidays during the year are now being celebrated individually with their own immediate family. This is because our family has grown to be this large. It is getting harder for everyone to get together all the time.
• Disney- Most of our family has passes to Disney, so we go often.
