Up to 20 students from Alabama and sur- rounding state high schools will gain hands-on experience in journalism and other communi- cation fields during the eighth annual summer workshop hosted by Auburn University’s Department of Communication and Journalism. The workshop will take place June 20 through 25 at AU and is FREE to selected participants. Students will have the opportuni- ty to compete for six $1,000 scholarships to Auburn University. For one week, participants will become print reporters, editors and designers, who are ready for any assignment that might arise in a high school environ- ment. Not only will they learn how to report and edit the news, they will understand and appreciate the passion journal- ists have for their work. The participants will spend the week learning about the media from professional journalists and from Auburn University faculty. Participants will take excit- ing field trips to media sites to learn about newspapers, television news, public relations and multimedia journalism. Students will stay in an AU campus resi- dence hall with college-age chaperones. The room, all meals and field trips are free for selected participants. Dr. Jennifer Wood Adams, journalism pro- gram director, and Associate Professor Nan Fairley will serve as co-directors of the annual workshop. The Alabama Press Association Foundation, the AU College of Liberal Arts and The Mobile Press-Register are provid- ing financial support for the work- shop. WHO IS SELECTED: • You must currently be a fresh- man, sophomore or junior. • Recruiting minority students is emphasized, but students of any ethnicity may apply. • Up to 20 students will be select- ed through a competitive application process. • The application deadline is APRIL 30, 2010, and student selections will be announced by May 15, 2010.
