The year 1851 was a cornerstone in Australia’s history. The fi rst discovery of payable gold in Australia was made at Ophir near Bathurst NSW (February). This was followed by the Victorian discoveries at Warrandyte (July), Clunes (July), Buninyong (August), Castlemaine (September) and Bendigo (October). Issued just weeks and months after these events, this certifi cate ranks alongside the earliest gold mining enterprises in Australia and pre-dates some of the substantial discoveries such as Beechworth, Omeo and Walhalla. In 1883 Charles Rasp, a boundary rider with the Mount Gipps sheep station, discovered an outcrop of ore in the remote Barrier Range. Rasp, his station manager and fi ve others syndicated to form the Broken Hill Mining Company which became the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) in 1888, the same year as the issue of this certifi cate Est. $400

The only release of the serial 000000 has been for sheets auctioned for charity in Sydney over the last few years. This is one of the very few notes with this serial released into circulation in the last 36 years since the hand numbering of 000000 notes with a “1” ceased. Common practice since that time has been the removal and destruction of the note. An article was published in an Australian Coin Review several years ago alluding to that fact.
