HMAS Swan was a Grimsby class sloop laid down by Cockatoo Island Dockyard Sydney 1935 and commission into the RAN 21 January 1937. Her company in peacetime was 135 offi cers and sailors which increased to 160 during the War. At the beginning of the war Swan was fi tted out as a minesweeper and cleared minefi elds laid by German ships off Wilson’s Promontory in Bass Strait and in waters around Newcastle, Hobart and the Spencer Gulf. During the Japanese advance in the Pacifi c she was engaged in minesweeping and convoy escort in New Guinea and the Islands. She was attacked from the air at Port Moresby and Amboina in early 1942 but escaped undamaged on both occasions. She was at Darwin when Japanese aircraft launched their fi rst attack on Australian soil, attacking Swan seven times. She got underway without getting a direct hit but near-misses caused damage, killing three of her crew (buried at sea) and wounding nineteen others. After repairs at Brisbane she was again attacked while berthed at Townsville during the Japanese bombing raids on the city. She was engaged in escorting convoys between Australia and New Guinea where she experienced several more enemy air attacks. She carried out a series of bombardments of enemy positions in New Guinea and New Britain and supported the operations of the Australian 6th Division at Wewak and was part of the practice operation by “Z” Special Force in training for their commando attack on Occupied Singapore. Lovingly nicknamed the “Mucky Duck”, she received three Battle Honours for wartime service: “Darwin 1942”, “Pacifi c 1941-45” and “New Guinea 1943-44”. After the Japanese capitulation General Eather of the Australian 11th Division accepted surrender papers from the commander-in-chief of Japanese forces General Ito aboard the Swan at Namatani in New Ireland in September 1945. Swan continued minesweeping after the war, clearing mines from shipping lanes in Australian, New Guinea and Solomon Island waters. In 1962 she was decommissioned and later sold for scrap Est. $7,500

115 Egypt Medal 1882 dated variety with suspender but no clasp engraved to S.Bonnici W.R.Servt HMS “Coquette”, minor rim bruise else gFine

Salvo Bonnici, born in Tunisia but a British subject was a ward room servant on the vessel HMS Coquette, a 4-gun screw gunboat of 430 tons and 9 knots speed that was launched at Pembroke in 1876. In 1882 the Coquette, commanded by Lieutenant Lennox Napier, took part in the Egyptian War. In August 1883 a landing party from the Coquette and other ships, consisting of 565 offi cers and men, occupied the town of Ismailia in the Suez Canal after some slight fi ghting. The Coquette further assisted in the seizure of the Suez Canal, an operation necessary in order to secure a safe passage for the British troops who were going to use Ismailia as a base. In February 1884 a landing party from the Coquette under Lieutenant Fritz Eden Crowe and crew from two other ships went ashore at Suakin, and assisted in the defence of that place by manning the fortifi cations. In March 1885 a Naval Brigade from the Coquette and four other ships joined a fi eld force of 13,000 men under Lieutenant General Sir Gerald Graham which marched out of Suakin. They occupied Hasheen on March 20th, and on March 22nd, under Major-General Sir J.C. MacNeill, they fought the battle of Tofrek. She was sold in 1889 Est. $90

On a voyage from Adelaide to Melbourne with 113 crew and passengers, the iron-hulled steamer ‘Admella’ ran onto Carpenter’s Rocks in the early hours of the morning of 6th August 1859 and within minutes broke up, leaving survivors stranded on the wreck. The Henty-owned ‘Lady Bird’ from Portland and the steamers ‘Ant’ and ‘Corio’ tried in vain to mount rescue attempts. Those clinging to the battered wreck were exposed to the Southern Ocean and the winter chill for over a week without fresh water and only a little food for sustenance. In the appalling conditions some were swept away by waves while others succumbed and slipped into the sea. After eight days the sea abated and rescuers managed to get the remaining 24 survivors to safety.

In a function at the Melbourne Exhibition Buildings in June 1860 specially commissioned Admella Medals were presented by the Governor of Victoria to those involved in rescue attempts from the land and sea. Those amongst the crews of the ships who had risked their lives in the rescue were also presented with medals of the Imperial Board of Trade and the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society. There appears to be no reference to a South Australian Governor’s Medal in publications relating to the Admella. An Adelaide Committee Relief Fund fi nancial statement published in December 1859 lists the names of offi cers and crews of the rescue ships who were given medals and monetary rewards but the name John Williamson is omitted. The present medal, with

the appearance of having been rather crudely fashioned from a variety of components, may well have been a hasty correction to an embarrassing oversight. Sadly, Williamson’s name appears to have been overlooked in the published accounts of the Admella story. The existence of the medal awarded to him by the Governor of South Australia is perhaps the only testament to his involvement in the rescue. Research in 150-year-old South Australian Government or Henty archives might one day reveal the story of this forgotten hero and restore his name to a place of honour.

The relationship of the fi ve accompanying items in the group with the Admella, if any at all, isn’t known. The last item with the naming ‘HMS Victoria’ on the edge may have origins to the British ship of that name which participated in the Crimea War or it may refer to the Australian Colonial vessel ‘HMVS Victoria’ which had the “V” dropped when the Royal Navy felt the Colony of Victoria was setting up its own navy. The Australian ship was later redesignated ‘HMCSS Victoria’, the crew of which served as a naval brigade during the First Taranaki War. It may be that John Williamson had served with the Australians in the New Zealand confl ict. He might have been in the Crimea. At least one crewman wrecked on the Admella and survived was known to have been a Crimean War veteran. If it can be positively ascertained that all six medals were awarded to the one person, particularly if he was an Australian Naval crewman, this becomes a very signifi cant group indeed.
