3052 Five Pounds Riddle-Heathershaw Q/11 fi rst prefi x, Note Issue Department type (R41) gFine and exceedingly rare, this elusive note missing from most collections, this example being a new discovery and the fi rst time offered in the marketplaceThe rarity of this issue is explained in a letter written by John Ash to a Commonwealth Bank manager on 7th May 1928:...I fi nd the trouble occurred through four old plates being used. The plates were put on the machine early in 1927. These were alright for use when Mr Kells’ signature appeared on the notes, but even so, the designation in the plates should have been altered to Governor instead of Chairman away back in 1923There were approximately 559,000 notes issued with the wrong designation. Would it be of any assistance if the whole of the notes were returned to us for re-examination of designation...The faulty plates have either already been destroyed or condemned for destruction. I regret the inconvenience caused through this error. It should be taken into account that of this number printed, most were withdrawn from circulation and destroyed due to the error in title designation. Normal ageing and wear and tear would have eventually seen off most of the other notes that might have remained in circulation, so the number of extant examples could easily be surmised to be very few indeed Est. $25,000

3340 Five Dollars Macfarlane-Henry prefi x CF06 serials 999999, 000000 (R220) Unc and an extraordinary pair (2 notes)The only release of the serial 000000 has been for sheets auctioned for charity in Sydney over the last few years. This is one of the very few notes with this serial released into circulation in the last 36 years since the hand numbering of 000000 notes with a “1” ceased. Common practice since this time has been the removal and destruction of the note. An article was published in an Australian Coin Review several years ago alluding to this fact. This is therefore an accidental release of such a note in Uncirculated condition, and together with the 999999 note that is often destroyed because of poor inking on the rollers, this is truly a unique pair Est. $10,000
