the tobacco factory theatre was recently invited to join the National Portfolio of organisations supported by arts council england (ace).

this is the first time ace have ever offered us regular support and it’s a significant achievement: there were only just over 100 new portfolio offers in the whole country, across all artforms. we are delighted by the recognition, by the slightly greater degree of stability that it offers and by the prospects for our future.

more immediately, I’m delighted to present a really strong autumn line-up. the season starts with the amazing bristol festival of Puppetry followed by fascinating one-man shows including mark thomas’ extraordinary and hilarious account of walking the Israel / Palestine border and a new play by tony Staveacre starring Les Dennis. Later, two of the most important companies that have played the theatre recently are returning: filter with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Northern broadsides with We Are Three Sisters and we welcome eclipse for the first time with One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show. No-one who saw Slightly fat features’s variety show here last year will want to miss their brand new show and I’m sure that if you have ever seen opera Project you will want to book ahead for La bohème.

jIGsYLes Dennis comes to bristol with a world premier that lifts the lid on the gritty truths behind the glittering facade of a life in comedy.Lurching unsteadily offstage at a Liverpool working men’s club – sweat, smoke and failure clinging to his faded 70s dinner suit – Jigsy is a journeyman variety comedian, struggling for survival in a changing world. the bright lights of television fame that boosted the careers of many of his contemporaries are flickering on a distant horizon. talking directly to the audience, Jigsy revisits his childhood on the tough streets of Scotland road, years of grafting on the docks and on the dole, his showbiz break-through, and the struggle to beat the booze and make it to the top.

Jigsy is a one-man play that gives an insight into the earthy heartland of Northern comedy and connects with the social history of Liverpool, the spirit of Scouse and the big questions. Life is hard, and then you die: “Still you have to laugh, don’t you?”

Jigsy is played by Les Dennis, who cut his comedy teeth in the Liverpool social clubs and went on to build a glittering career in television light entertainment, and more recently the theatre. this play was Sattf’s very first production twelve years ago and the company is thrilled to be bringing this new production to a much wider audience in 2012.

on days when performances are scheduled, the box office will be open until the start of the performance. If there is a show scheduled on a Sunday or during public holidays, the box office will be open 2 hours prior to the performance.

we accept all major credit and debit cards except american express. a booking fee of 50p for 1 ticket or £1 for 2 or more tickets applies to all card transactions. we cannot offer refunds, but can exchange tickets for other performances of the same production (subject to availability).

Please do be aware that a booking fee of £2.50 per transaction will be charged for online bookings. bookings made direct with the theatre either in person or by phone do not incur a fee other than the card-handling fee described above.
