the tobacco factory theatre was recently invited to join the National Portfolio of organisations supported by arts council england (ace).

this is the first time ace have ever offered us regular support and it’s a significant achievement: there were only just over 100 new portfolio offers in the whole country, across all artforms. we are delighted by the recognition, by the slightly greater degree of stability that it offers and by the prospects for our future.

more immediately, I’m delighted to present a really strong autumn line-up. the season starts with the amazing bristol festival of Puppetry followed by fascinating one-man shows including mark thomas’ extraordinary and hilarious account of walking the Israel / Palestine border and a new play by tony Staveacre starring Les Dennis. Later, two of the most important companies that have played the theatre recently are returning: filter with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Northern broadsides with We Are Three Sisters and we welcome eclipse for the first time with One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show. No-one who saw Slightly fat features’s variety show here last year will want to miss their brand new show and I’m sure that if you have ever seen opera Project you will want to book ahead for La bohème.

the brewery programme includes four world premieres from hugely exciting emerging talent and I’m thrilled that we have an extended portfolio of classes, workshops, talkbacks and other opportunities to get close to the action.

under anthony hopkins’ celebrated directorial debut, this critically acclaimed portrayal embraces the myth of the tortured artist, with a life distinguished by exuberantly successful highs and pathetically undignified lows. Playing a man who wrestled with the psychological conflict between creative talent and a self-destructive impulse, bob Kingdom’s remarkable portrait of Dylan thomas, directed by anthony hopkins, offers a chance to experience the electrifying presence of thomas’ last great lecture tour before the white horse tavern and the legendary seventeenth whiskey.

blending the stories and the poetry with incisive comments on the nature of performing and audiences, Kingdom takes us through wales, past and present, and shows us the beauty, the humour, the passion and wit of the words of this infamous writer.

heralded worldwide as “a lyrical tour de force”, since 2005 over 60,000 people have enjoyed bob Kingdom’s electrifying performance as Dylan thomas in this critically acclaimed production. It returns to the tft after a sell-out run in 2009.

Dylan thomas: return Journey

mark thomas

“a brilliant investigative journalist disguised as a comedian… very funny indeed” Daily telegraph

following his sell-out nationwide show The Manifesto, award-winning comedian and activist mark thomas returns with his brand new show Walking the Wall.

Never one to take the easy option, mark decided to go rambling in the middle east and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation barrier crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side.

this is the story of 300,000 settlers; a 750km wall; six arrests, one stoning; too much hummus and a simple question…“can you ever get away from it all with a good walk?”

“Thomas tells a rich and fascinating story – as well as a crucially important one. An impeccably mesmerising storyteller, he keeps his convictions in check enough to share his experiences with disarming honesty and an appealing dry wit.” chortle.co.uk

“Thomas has pretty much pushed his brand of intrusive and peripatetic comedy to the limit” ***** the telegraph

“Moving and inspiring as gripping as any live performance you will see” ***** the Guardian

“[Thomas] delivers an intelligent and entertaining tour of the one of the most fought-over patches of land on the planet...” **** the times

“Thomas effectively juxtaposes the laughs and silencing horror... a frequently moving tale” **** the Scotsman

jIGsYLes Dennis comes to bristol with a world premier that lifts the lid on the gritty truths behind the glittering facade of a life in comedy.Lurching unsteadily offstage at a Liverpool working men’s club – sweat, smoke and failure clinging to his faded 70s dinner suit – Jigsy is a journeyman variety comedian, struggling for survival in a changing world. the bright lights of television fame that boosted the careers of many of his contemporaries are flickering on a distant horizon. talking directly to the audience, Jigsy revisits his childhood on the tough streets of Scotland road, years of grafting on the docks and on the dole, his showbiz break-through, and the struggle to beat the booze and make it to the top.

Jigsy is a one-man play that gives an insight into the earthy heartland of Northern comedy and connects with the social history of Liverpool, the spirit of Scouse and the big questions. Life is hard, and then you die: “Still you have to laugh, don’t you?”

Jigsy is played by Les Dennis, who cut his comedy teeth in the Liverpool social clubs and went on to build a glittering career in television light entertainment, and more recently the theatre. It is written by local playwright tony Staveacre. The Very Thought of You (tft), Slapstick!; Fred Karno’s Army (boV) and directed by hannah chissick.

Doug francisco, the chameleon-like ring master of the Invisible circus, presents a multiphrenic one-man cabaret of stories and characters from his own adventures around the world.Delving into his past as a street performer in europe, francisco invokes a plethora of potent eccentrics in a variety of shady and sublime locations, from Portuguese jails, to the moroccan mountains. he tells stories of his journeys and adventures in the pursuit of positive change and solidarity with the dream of bringing the show to the stage.

this show is a medley of schizophrenic voices and faces from the past, all conversing across different chapters, the theatricality of the ringmaster contrasting with the gritty realism of the other characters as the stories and chapters of memories are presented as acts in the cabaret of life.

a one-man carnival of storytelling, physical comedy and song, Doug francisco parodies without prejudice, invoking the dreams, memories and nightmares of his own european parade.

against the backdrop of a dark, remote northern town, three remarkable young women live their lives brightly.haworth 1840s; in a gloomy parsonage where there are neither curtains nor comforts, charlotte, anne and emily brontë light up their world with outspoken wit, aspirations, dreams and ideas. and throughout their confined lives intensely lived… they write.

anyone who has read a brontë novel cannot fail to be stirred by their overwhelming humanity, charged emotion and brooding, prescient unease with the status quo.

Now come to know the voices behind them.

with exquisitely drawn characterisations, a nod to chekhov and a touch of poetic licence, we are Three Sisters is a pearl of a play which evokes with piercing clarity the life and distinct personalities of these three spirited individuals.

Northern broadsides is a unique theatre company with a true Northern voice. their work is characterised by a high degree of theatrical inventiveness from an ensemble cast of multi-talented and charismatic Northern actors.

Love, passion and heartbreak: Puccini’s masterpiece, La bohème, is one of the best loved operas ever written. In a student garret in 19th century Paris, the young aspiring poet rodolfo meets mimi, a pretty but ailing seamstress. the pair fall desperately in love but their relationship struggles to survive both the cold winter and mimi’s impending illness. they part, and when eventually they are reconciled, it is too late for mimi…

Sung in english, this timeless and vivacious story of young love, life, laughter and loss is set to achingly beautiful melodies with a spine-tinglingly rich orchestral score. opera Project, one of the uK’s leading touring opera companies, returns to bring this exquisite masterpiece to life with soprano Victoria Joyce (Gilda, Rigoletto 2009) leading a cast drawn from the best of young british talent.

In a world like this, how is the nation’s youth to behave? to survive, you have to be feral: violent, drunk, drugged and debauched. with choreographic skill and linguistic exuberance, Volcano charts the progress of alex and his droogs in this dystopic landscape.

beautifully designed and with extraordinary performances, this production stays true to burgess’ original story both in its cut-throat inventiveness and in its insistence on the question of whether it is better to be forced to be good or to be free to do evil.

“What’s it going to be then, eh?” you choose.

radical classics™ are uniquely disruptive versions of widely-known, popular, canonical or cult texts. the series so far includes ayckbourn’s Time of My Life and coward’s Private Lives, as well as some of the best known of Shakespeare’s texts, a version of Medea and The Communist Manifesto.

THE CHERRY ORCHARDAnTOn CHEKHOvShaKeSPeare at the tobacco factoryone of the pinnacles of world

drama, and Shakespeare’s greatest masterpiece, King Lear is the most complete account we have of what it is – and what it is not – to be human. at a time when autocratic regimes around the world are under unprecedented threat it has also acquired a new contemporary relevance.

this play was Sattf’s very first production twelve years ago and the company is thrilled to be bringing this new production to a much wider audience in 2012.

“Andrew Hilton’s commanding production of Richard II… is once again a revelation” the Guardian

Sattf makes its third excursion into chekhov, after its widely admired tobacco factory Three Sisters in 2005 and its bristol old Vic co-production of Uncle Vanya in 2009.In his final tragi-comic masterpiece chekhov portrays an aristocratic family bewildered and impotent in the face of financial bankruptcy and the huge social changes sweeping russia in the early years of the twentieth century.

“A marvellous blend of heartache and hilarity… This truly is the most wonderful production” the times on Uncle Vanya

the tobacco factory and brewery theatres form a vital part of bristol’s theatrical landscape. to do all we do now costs in excess of £1.3m a year and we are proud that we earn over 85% of this directly. However, while we receive a small amount of public funding, we are sustained by the enthusiastic loyalty of our audiences, generous support from individuals, trusts, foundations and businesses. we are grateful for this support and we would love to welcome you into our wonderful community of friends.

our corporate friends choose to support the tft while showcasing their businesses, enjoying useful networks, using our spaces, taking advantage of opportunities for sponsorship and advertising, client hospitality or staff entertainment and passing on ticket offers to employees.annual membership starts at a very affordable level and can be tailored to suit the scale, style and priorities of your organisation. contact sophie@tobaccofactory to chat about what might work for you.
