The Assump on of Mary

“Chris anity holds forth a surprising happiness and promise of joy. It describes and offers a mystery of life that is full and forever. The magnificent Feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 15th proclaims the deepest and most profound of these Chris an mysteries and promises. Virgin Mary—The Bearer who was the first and best disciple of her Son—lived a long life in the presence of God. She experienced Assump on a er falling asleep in death (called Dormi on) and a transport to Heaven (called Metes seen, Assump on). Remarkably, this is the joy that lies in wait for all other disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ whose bodies will rise at the end of me and be with God in Heaven forever.” (A Reflec on on the Feast of the Assump on©, Virginia K h p://campus.udayton.edu/mary/medita ons/kimball.html)

Tuesday, August 15th we commemorate the Assump on, which proclaims that the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken directly to heaven a er her life on earth ended. Mary’s unions with God in Christ was unique from the beginning. The Assump on goes beyond the mere material, however, it reminds us that we are des ned for spiritual glory because we will one day be fully united with God through Christ. The Feast of the Assump on is a Holy Day of Obliga on.

The Assump on is the oldest feast day of Our Lady, but how did it come to be first celebrated? Its origin had been lost in the days when the city of Jerusalem had been leveled in the year 135 by Emperor Hadrian (76-138) and was rebuilt as Aelia Capitolina in honor of Jupiter.

For the next 200 years, every memory of Jesus was obliterated from the city, and the sites made holy by His life, death and Resurrec on became pagan temples. Jerusalem was restored as a sacred city at the me of the Roman Emperor Constan ne (c285-337). The building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 336 came first, then the sacred sites began to be restored and memories of the life of Our Lord began to be celebrated by the people of Jerusalem. On the hill of Mount Zion, was the “Place of Dormi on,” the spot of Mary’s “falling asleep,” where she died.

The “Memory of Mary” was celebrated, at first, only in Pales ne, but then it was extended to all of the churches of the East. In the seventh century, the day was celebrated as the “Falling Asleep” (“Dormi o”) of the Mother of God, in Rome. Soon the name was changed to the “Assump on of

Mary,” since there was more to the feast than her dying. It was also proclaimed that she had been taken up, body and soul, into heaven.

The prayer for the feast reads: “All-powerful and ever-living God: You raised the sinless Virgin Mary, mother of your Son, body and soul, to the glory of heaven. May we see heaven as our final goal and come to share her glory.”

It is celebrated on the 15th day of August each year and is a Holy Day of Obliga on. This was taken from an article written by Father Clifford Stevens. “The Assumption of Mary: A Belief Since Apostolic Times.”

The image to the right is one of the panels which belonged to the Polyptych of Isabella, the Catholic. This polyptych originally comprised forty-seven small panels (each measuring about 21 x 16 cen metres). Approximately twenty-seven survive, of which two were executed by Michel Si ow, the others by Juan de Flandes. Credit: h p://www.wga.hu/html_m/s/si ow/assump .html

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS DINE OUT

Talk to your teens about da ng.

High school may be a me when teenagers begin to think about da ng, making communica on between teens and their parents even more important. Consider having an open, hon-est conversa on with your teen about da ng and appropriate rela onships. Talk about what they want out of a rela onship, and what their values are. Make sure they know how to com-municate what they feel comfortable with, and what makes them uncomfortable. Talk with them about Catholic morals, and make sure they know you are always available. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® ar cle “Talking with Your Teen about Da ng Safety” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
