Conversion of St. Paul, the Apostle—January 25th St. Paul shares a feast day with St. Peter on June 29. But, on this feast, we celebrate the conversion of Saul, who wanted to persecute Chris ans, to St. Paul, an evangelizer of gen les. The Conversion of St. Paul is celebrated on January 25. When the Jewish Pharisee Saul set out from Jerusalem to Damascus, his aim was to persecute the fledgling Chris an community. The drama c story of St. Paul’s miraculous conversion is told several mes in the Acts of the Apostles and New Testament le ers. Paul became the apostle to the Gen les and carried Christ’s message around the Roman Empire. He also shares a feast day with St. Peter on June 29. The January feast was known as the “transla on” of St. Paul in the martyrology of St. Jerome; it may originally have commemorated the moving of Paul’s relics. Now, it appropriately closes the Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity. Paul is the patron saint of Greece, Malta, and the Cursillo movement. h ps://catholiccurrent.org/fact-of-faith/conversion-of-st-paul-the-apostle/

Prayer for Peace—In honor of Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr. In 2015, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, president of the USCCB, released a statement in honor of Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr., who we remember on Monday, January 20th, this year. In his statement Archbishop Kurtz said, “Dr. King reminded us of the power of prayer and ac on. I invite everyone, this day and every day, to implore God to make us his instruments in crea ng a more just society.” He then closed with this excerpt from Pope Francis’s prayer for peace: “Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensi ve to the plea of [those] who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepida on into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness. “Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with pa ence and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconcilia-

on. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words ‘division,’ ‘hatred’ and ‘war’ be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be ‘brother,’ and our way of life will always be that of . . . Peace . . . ! Amen.” (Invoca on for Peace, June 8, 2014) h ps://catholiccurrent.org/prayers/prayer-in-honor-of-the-rev-dr-mar n-luther-king-jr/

SAINT AGNES (died 304) Feast Day—January 21

Wri ng about Saint Agnes in the year 377, Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, declared: “This is a virgin’s birthday into heaven: let us imitate her chas ty! And a martyr’s heavenly birthday: let us offer ourselves in sacrifice!” Chas ty: mastery of oneself in order to give of oneself whether in the priestly, religious, married, or single state. Sacrifice: “to make holy,” to set someone or something apart for service. Ambrose knew these virtues indispensable for discipleship, but challenging to prac ce in his world—or our own. Barely a teenager, Agnes faced gruesome tortures bravely and, when ordered to worship pagan gods, boldly made the Sign of the Cross instead. Thus, her youthful courage strengthened adult believers who wavered under persecu on or grew indifferent when persecu ons passed. To bestow on Agnes its highest honor and keep her witness fresh in believers’ hearts, the Church inscribed her name at the heart of the Eucharis c liturgy, in the Roman Canon (Eucharis c Prayer I), un l Va can II the Roman Church’s only Eucharis c Prayer.

CALLED TO BE HOLY With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s rela onship with Israel and John the Bap st’s rela onship with Jesus. Israel’s rela onship with God is so close, so in mate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salva on [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Bap st that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deeply our rela onship to Jesus and what that rela onship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
