As the pandemic drags on, it is taking a toll on all of us. For some of us, the economic impact is serious. For others, social isola on is leading to depression. For all of us, worry makes us anxious. We have no control over this. We have no past experiences to lean upon. We are having to live day by day without knowing what the future holds.

As you can imagine, depression and anxiety are hi ng new highs among Americans. It makes sense that facing a new, scary, and unknown situa on will bring about anxiety. Living with that fear for months on end can cause serious depression. Knowing some symptoms of depression might help in a “self-check” to determine how you are doing. You may feel irritable, exhausted, anxious, hyper-vigilant, and angry. Couple that with other behavior changes likely occurring during COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, like irregular ea ng and sleeping pa erns and shi ing energy use, and it’s a recipe for a mental health disaster. This can create anxiety, ongoing stress, depression, and thoughts of suicide. It is important that you seek help if you feel these symptoms are becoming more severe or if you have thoughts of suicide. Call the Na onal Suicide Preven on Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 if you are feeling suicidal. Call your primary care physician if you think you need help. Go to the LA County Department of Mental Health for resources at: h ps://dmh.lacounty.gov/covid-19-informa on/. As Catholics, we look to scripture for help whenever we are facing a difficult situa on.

Consider the story of Moses. He was tasked with leading the Israelites through the desert. It’s hot. People are hungry, and their expecta ons of him are very high. Moses feels overwhelmed. He lashes out at God, saying, “Why have you treated me so badly? What am I supposed to do now? If this is the way you’re going to treat me, put me to death at once and do not let me see my misery” (Num. 11:10–17).

God tells Moses, “Gather 70 elders. I will take some of the spirit that is on you and put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people along with you so that you will not bear it by yourself.” God recognized Moses’ fragile state and sent others to check in and be present to him. Look at the psalms. The psalmists’ express despair (Ps. 22), suffering (Ps. 38), and loneliness (Ps. 88). They lament to God (Ps. 13) and ask for help (Ps. 6). These feelings that society tends to label as “bad” are honored in the Bible. So are the reac ons that follow, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35): the shortest and perhaps most profound line in all of scripture. The Son of God let his feelings out. We should do the same. From these examples, we see that we need others to help us (Moses.) We can express our anger, fears and despair (Psalms.) And, we need to get our emo ons out (John 11:35.) With God and each other, we will get through this together.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Ma hew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connec ng these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is o en too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us remember that we can share that burden with our Chris an sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

What’s known about the father of Western monas cism is from the “Dialogues of (Pope) St. Gregory the Great.” Sent to Rome to study, 20-year-old Benedict shunned the city’s wickedness to take up solitary living in Subiaco. He stayed there for about 25 years, with disciples he organized into 12 small communi es. Around 529 he established the monastery at Monte Cassino, near Naples, where he spent the rest of his life and finalized his famous Rule, which spread throughout Western Europe. St. Scholas ca was his sister; St. Gregory describes their spiritual talks and moving final mee ng. Benedict is the patron saint of Europe and of spelunkers, perhaps because some of his early founda ons were in caves or gro oes. h ps://catholiccurrent.org/saints/saint-benedict-abbot/

Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirma ons, gradua ons, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Gore , the only mother ever to a end her child’s canoniza on! In pov-erty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, proposi oned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen mes. As she lay dying, Maria assured the a ending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed a er dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg As-sunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and mur-derer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tips for keeping calm and paren ng during stressful mes

We are living in unprecedented mes, and many parents are stretched to capacity. The added stress of pandemic living can make it hard to parent calmly and effec vely when children are ac ng out, but it’s important to remember that children are also going through a huge period of change right now. Instead of reac ng in anger, try these ideas to keep your cool. Talk to a friend – many people are suffering from a lack of physical community, so reach out by phone or text. Pray together as a family, asking for pa ence, cheerfulness, and whatever other virtues you need to get you through the day. Set an example of forgiveness with your children — ask for it when you need it and grant it when they do. For more ps, get a copy of the VIRTUS® ar cle, “Say it on repeat: I am going to keep my calm!” at h ps://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
