Catholic Funeral Rites—Honoring Life in Death

Since 1963, the Catholic Church has allowed crema on of the body. This past Oc-tober, the Va can’s Doctrine of the Faith published a document that noted some clarifica ons on the disposi on of cremated remains (cremains). These clarifica ons were reviewed and approved by Pope Francis.

All rituals concerning funerals in the Catholic Church are based on the Chris an belief that there will be resurrec on of the dead. Jesus himself made this promise on several occasions which we read in the New Testament and Gospels. In I Corinthians 15, Paul says, “So also is the resurrec on of the dead. It is sown corrup ble; it is raised incorrup ble… At death we consign the body to the grave. We do not consign the soul there.” Jesus promised, in John 14:2-3, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” At the death of a Catholic Chris an, whose life was begun in the waters of Bap sm and strengthened at the Eucharis c table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end. (Order of Chris an Funerals, no. 4)

These clarifica ons in the document stated that cremains are to be buried in the ground or interred in a columbarium (crypt). Ashes are not to be sca ered or divided among family members or remain in the home of a loved one. The cremated remains are to be treated with all of the respect and dignity one would afford the body.

Our rituals are all designed to honor the living person who has passed on into death. There are three stages to the Catholic Funeral Rite. The first is the Vigil where the Chris an Community keeps watch with the family in prayer to the God of mercy. This is also a me for the family and friends of the deceased share stories about the

loved one, and the Church encourages the Vigil to be the place where eulogies are read and shared. The second stage is the Funeral Liturgy itself. At the Funeral Liturgy, the Church gathers with the family and friends of the deceased to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the Paschal Mystery. The Funeral Liturgy, therefore, is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief. The third and final stage is the commi al of the body or cremated remains. The Rite of Commi al is an expression of the communion that exists between the Church on earth and the Church in heaven: the deceased passes with our farewell prayers into the welcoming company of those who need faith no longer, but see God face-to-face.

Not everyone celebrates all three stages. It is preferred that the body be present at the Funeral Liturgy, even if the deceased and the family wish crema on. However, it is becoming more common that crema on is chosen because of the cost of funerals. In that case, the cremains need to be present at the Funeral Liturgy. If no body or cremains are present we are celebra ng a Memorial Mass. Again, ashes are not to be stored on a mantel or sca ered on mountains, the sea or the desert, or in jewelry. It is not acceptable and actually very disrespec ul.

Please talk to me or another priest about any concerns you may have. I promise you that your clergy want to lovingly help you through this period of mourning.

Help children communicate reading between the lines When children express that something is wrong at school or with other ac vi es, it's o en the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a be er school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is s ll being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As par-ents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with nega ve feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communica on with kids will enable you to be their advocate. For a copy of the VIRTUS© ar cle “Communica on Tip No. 15: When Children Complain about School,” Email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227. For more information on other ways to keep kids safe, contact Linda Filkins, the Parish Safeguard Committee Chairperson at (626) 214-7846 or the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office at (213) 637-7227. For particular help, call the Victims Assistance Office at (213) 637-7650.
