NATURE NOTES -Perseids Meteor ShowerWhat’s better than lying on your back at night and starring at the stars? Our answer here is ‘not much’ except when there’s a meteor shower on that same night! From August 9 –August 14, be sure to gaze up at the night’s sky because the Perseids meteor shower is scheduled to make its appearance.

Perseids is the name of a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet, Swift-Tuttle. A stream of debris, called the Perseids cloud, stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 130-year orbit. Most of the dust in the cloud today is around a thousand years old. This meteor shower has been observed for over 2000 years. During its peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour. They can be seen all across the sky, but because of the path of Swift-Tuttle’s orbit, the Perseids meteor shower is primarily visible in the northern hemisphere.
