Water, the Elixir of Life

There’s a place up north that many traverse to every year, a special place where cool breezes blow and the pace of life moves slower… a place known as “the Cape Cod of the Midwest”. This is Door County! Located in Wisconsin’s peninsula along Lake Michigan and Green Bay, Door County offers beautiful scenery, boasts great eats, lodging and attractions, and delivers a relaxing atmosphere all its own. wellnessLooking for something fun to do and get some exercise while you are doing it? Try

going on a hike. The St Louis area has so many places to walk and hike that I thought I would start featuring a few trails you might want to try out. Each month I

will post 2 trails, one that is easy and a more difficult trail. Let me know if you would like to include one of your favorite trails. Take a picture of you hiking and I will post

the photo! Easy—Bee Tree Park TrailsLocated in South County off of Telegraph and Becker Roads, 2701 Finestown Rd, 63129There are 5 different trails—all of them relatively easy to traverse. All the trails are short with the longest trail .8 mile. What is nice about these trails – the beautiful view of the Mississippi River. The park is known for its spring wildflowers. This is a great place to commune with nature and listen to the many birds that call Bee Tree home.

Difficult –Round House Trail Loop, Rockwoods RangeLocated off Fox Creek Road in west St Louis County. Interstate 44 to Six Flags/Allenton Road exit 261, north to the first stop light, west to Fox Creek Rd and 2 miles to the parking lot.4 mile hike on a natural, often muddy in spots terrain. This is another trail that is great for observing wildlife and bird watching. Use a lot of repellent on this trail as it gets buggier the deeper you go into the woods and bring your water! It is rugged with rises from 600 to 750 feet elevation.

Have fun hiking and send your photos and your favorite trails to: [email protected] mail it to 767 A Gravois Road, Fenton, MO 63026.

by Kevin McDonnell, PhDTrinkets Tea and Me, a teashop in downtown Kirkwood, located at 217 S. Kirkwood Rd. between Spencer’s Grill and Imo’s, has expanded to nearly 100 premium loose leaf teas in 2014. As always, the teas are at the lowest prices in the St. Louis area. These organic teas offer numerous health benefits. This month, let’s discuss the health benefits of White Tea which is higher in antioxidants than both Black and Green Teas. The Antioxidants in White Tea may protect the body from free radicals that harm DNA and accelerate the aging process. White Tea has a type of antioxidants called Catechins which may lower the bad LDL cholesterol while elevating the good HDL cholesterol. These Catechins are also thought to stimulate fat burning to assist to weight loss. White Tea has also been shown to be both antiviral and antibacterial. Several research studies have shown a correlation between drinking White Tea and lowering the risk of colon, prostate and stomach cancer. White Tea is thought to lower blood pressure, help protect the heart, and slightly thin the blood. A study showed that men who drank 2 cups or more of White Tea were 50% less likely to die after

suffering a heart attack. White Tea is made from young tea leaves and has a high concentration of Theanine which is known to have relaxing properties. However , White Tea is also thought to increase the metabolism. Finally, White Tea may help prevent tooth decay by destroying bacteria in the mouth along with containing a small amount of fluoride to protect the teeth. Trinkets Tea and Me offers over 10 White Teas, some Award Winning. We always suggest that you do your own review of research and claims, discuss the information with your physician, and draw your own conclusions on the health benefits of various Teas. However, note that research studies are likely to use the Best Premium Teas. So, don’t “shortchange” yourself. Buy Premium Teas and save money at the same time. Come to Trinkets Tea and Me, an alternative to the “Overpriced High Pressure Mall Store”. Enjoy a relaxing pressure free atmosphere where you can discuss Teas, pay the best prices in town, and maybe hear a song from Tina, the St. Louis “singing Tea lady”.

If you have been diagnosed with arthritis you may be interested to know that research shows that massage therapy will assist in relieving your pain and stiffness. To be clear, there are two types of arthritis that are quite different from each other in definition, but have similar painful patterns. People with osteoarthritis suffer from joint inflammation due to wear and tear which causes damage to cartilage. It occurs as the body ages or at the site of prior injury, and can cause so much discomfort as to prevent active adults from participating in sports, exercise or even every day activities such as walking. The second type called rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease affecting women three times more than men, although children and adolescents can also be affected. This condition causes inflammation of tissues outside the muscles and bones. It is usually detected/diagnosed in adults between the ages of 20-40 and the condition is much improved if the calming effects of massage are included in the overall treatment. An excellent research report featured in Massage Today by Robin B. Anderson promotes massage as part of an overall recovery plan. The data states that joint mobility and

relief from pain were achieved with the inclusion of massage as part of the systematic approach to improving function of painful joints and reduction of medication. As long as the client is not in an acute stage where joints are inflamed, massage therapy should be part of the wellness plan. An experienced massage therapist will use Swedish, Myofascial, Lymph Drainage and Trigger Point therapies to encourage the affected muscles around painful joints to release, thus increasing range of motion and remove swelling. Considering that thirty-three to ninety percent of people over the age of 65 have aches and pains from bony deformations in knees, hips, and the joints in the fingers, massage therapy should be a part of an overall plan to restore health and prevent future flare-ups. Massage can relieve pain, reduce inflammation and possibly reduce the amount of medication needed. A weekly massage appointment will help you to achieve relief from pain, increased mobility, and function along with better sleep. To be able to move without intense pain and enjoy daily activities with a full range of motion into mature years enhances the enjoyment of life. If you are

experiencing stiff, inflamed and painful joints call us at Creekside Massage and talk about what we can do to improve the quality of your life so you can resume the activities that you love.

Dear Kolleen,

I am really worried about my friend. She has been acting really different lately – spending a lot of time alone and looking sad. I am worried that she could be depressed. How would you know if someone was depressed? Signed, Worried friend

Dear Worried friend,

This is an excellent question. Sounds like you are a great friend! The most important thing you can do for your friend is to be there and provide support and encouragement. Also, remember don’t pass judgment or argue that they have nothing to be sad about. Depression can be hard to define and even harder to understand. Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad. But these feelings are usually short-lived and pass within a couple of days. When you have depression, it interferes with daily life and causes pain for both you and those who care about you. Depres-sion is a common but serious illness.People with depressive illnesses do not all experience the same symptoms. The severity, frequency, and duration of symptoms vary depending on the individual and his or her particular illness.Signs and symptoms include:

• Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, orhelplessness • Irritability, restlessness • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable • Fatigue and decreased energy• Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping• Overeating, or appetite loss • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems

that do not ease even with treatment.Depression can look different in each person. wellnessAGING EFFECTS ON YOUR SKIN

by Andrea Sims - Rodan & Fields Consultant I’ve been writing for months about our skin as we age. The changes that take place as we lose collagen and our lines and wrinkles become more prominent, the increased dryness and in some cases the development of rosacea. It’s not just our skin where we see changes. In this article I’ll highlight the effects of hormones and how they have power over every cell in our bodies, and nowhere is that power more visible than in our skin.

Cellulite What is it? Cellulite is a deposit of fat that pushes against the connective tissue just below the surface of the skin, causing skin to look dimply and puckered like an orange peel or cottage cheese. It’s not specifically related to being overweight. In fact, many thin women battle these troublesome dimples. While estrogen appears to initiate the development of cellulite, other hormones including insulin, cortisol, and thyroid may play a role. What can you do? Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot you can do to truly combat cellulite. Weight loss and exercise are some recommendations. Cellulite is less noticeable with darker skin. I recommend you use Rodan + Fields sunless-tanning foam as a safe and effective way to reduce the appearance

of dimples and create flawless tan.The MidYears, or Perimeniopause:

When hormones Start toLet Us Down

The physical changes that occur during our late forties and through our fifties can be very disconcerting, to say the least. Men are attracted to us when our skin is flawless, our cheeks are soft and round and our lips are shaped like rosebuds. Dwindling hormone levels, coupled with cumulative sun damage, further cause our skin to get blotchy and thinner. What’s more our skeleton starts to shrink and our hair turns gray. We literally start to vanish. Since we are no longer calling it quits at sixty-five, you need to stay in the game throughout our lives. It’s then of utmost importance to continue to take care of our skin as many of us are finding ourselves in new relationships in our seventies. Your skin can be beautiful when it’s nurtured, well cared for, and protected from the sun. Rodan + Fields Redefine Regimen minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, pore size and increases firmness. Leaving you looking younger than your years.

Estrogen – The Good,The Bad, The …

Estrogen, which defines our beautiful, feminine characteristics, is also

responsible for some of the physical challenges that women experience more than men. Estrogen stimulates localized fat deposits especially around the abdomen, thighs, back, and buttocks. And unfortunately we gain fat in our waistline. On the thighs, fat doesn’t just settle, it presses through collagen fibers in the skin, helping cellulite to blossom even on skinny bodies. Remember, using a sunless tanning foam will help reduce the appearance of dimples.

Fat, Collagen andElastin Reduction

It is emotionally and physically deflating to experience the reduction in skin’s structural components as we age. In our forties and fifties, skin starts to wrinkle, droop, and sag seemingly overnight. Lack of hormones and cumulative sun damage result in net loss of collagen and elastin fibers. In other words, fewer of these supporting tissues are being made to replace what is being broken down. For example, an astounding 30% of skin collagen is lost in the first five years after menopause. Additionally, like a deflated balloon, the redistribution of fat from the face to the fanny accounts for some of the most profound changes in the aging face.

So what can be done? Rodan + Fields Redefine Regimen, and Amp MD Roller is a comprehensive skincare regimen that layers cosmetic ingredients and proven peptide technology to help defend against and reduce the visible signs of aging for noticeably firmer, smoother, flawless-looking skin. The products stimulate collagen and elastin production giving Father Time a time out. The AMP MD Micro-Exfoliating Roller utilizes micro-exfoliation to improve the tone and texture of the complexion as skin responds to the contact of the micro-needle tips. When used nightly with the REDEFINE Regimen and Night Renewing Serum, the result is firmer, younger-looking skin.

6 ∙ ACTIVE LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE ∙ AUGUST 2014 ∙ www.activelifestylesmag.com Be Good To Yourself And Drink Plenty Of Water!

You are very dehydrated if the amount of water in your body drops by as little as one percent. A loss of five percent of the water in your body causes your skin to shrink, an inability to move your muscles properly and difficulty in thinking clearly. Humans can only survive a few days without water. Humans need to take in at least two quarts of water a day. Half that amount should come from water and other liquids we drink. Milk, for example, is 87% water. Another third comes from our food. A raw potato is 90% water and a tomato is 95%. The remaining water is created by our own body. As the cells of your body use food to produce energy their by-pro-duct is water. On a beautiful 65 degree day with low humidity the average person expends about 64 ounces of water by urinating, breathing, and sweating. You will need much more water if you live in hot, humid or cold climates. Hiking in the mountain’s higher altitudes will also increase the amount of water you will need. Exercising in indoor pools where the water temperature

is 84 degrees or higher and the air temperature is in the 80’s is another place where more water is needed. Another time you need more water is when you are sick with a cold or flu, especially if you are running a fever. Many people do not drink until they feel thirsty. This is a bad habit to get into because when you are thirsty you are already dehydrated. Mild dehydration can cause health conditions such as lethargy and constipation because the body will siphon the water from the colon. Other dehydration symptoms are loss of appetite, minor headaches, dizziness and general lack of mental clarity. A pregnant woman who is dehydrated can go into premature labor. According to the Mayo Clinic there is even evidence that drinking adequate amounts of water can prevent health conditions such as kidney stones and colon cancer. You need approximately 64 ounces of water for your body to function efficiently. If you would like to know exactly how much water your body needs you can figure this by dividing your body weight by two. This will give you the number of ounces of water you need a day. Space your water consumption evenly throughout the day. A good way to know that you are getting the water you need is by using a water bottle or keeping a pitcher of water in the refrigerator. If drinking this amount of water is new for you start out slowly increasing your intake by eight ounces each day. This will help your body adjust and you will spend less time in the bathroom. Exercisers should drink an extra eight ounces of water for every hour of exercise they do. The American Dietetic Association

recommends at least two cups of water two hours before exercising, followed by another two cups of water 15 to 20 minutes before endurance exercise activities (anything for more than 60 minutes). During exercise drink every 15 to 20 minutes. Water is recommended instead of sports drinks during exercise unless you are going to be exercising for longer than one hour or in extreme conditions. Plain old water is the best choice. You can add some flavor to your water by adding a slice of lemon or lime or a sprig of mint. Sports drinks and flavored water often have hidden calories and ingredients we don’t need such as sodium. The typical American diet contains too much sodium. Other beverages to avoid are caffeinated, such as, coffee, tea, soda, and alcoholic drinks because they are diuretics and increase fluid loss. In fact, you should drink a glass of water for each cup of these beverages you drink. Decaffeinated beverages are better than caffeinated but some of these are decaffeinated by using sodium, which raises their sodium content. Are you trying to lose weight or maintain your current weight? Drinking water is the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off! Water has no calories and helps the stomach to feel full. Drink a glass of water 20 minutes before eating and you won’t eat as much because the stomach already perceives that it is full. Water also helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause an increase in fat deposits, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits. The kidneys flush waste from

the blood stream such as excess sodium and minerals. If the kidneys don’t get enough water to function properly some of their workload is given to the liver. The liver’s primary function is to metabolize stored fat into useable energy for the body. If the liver has to do some of the kidney’s work it can’t operate at full capacity. As a result, it metabolizes less fat, which means more fat remains stored in the body. Most senior citizens are dehydrated because they lose the sensation of thirst as they age. I wonder how many symptoms we think are part of old age that could simply be the body trying to exist on an inadequate amount of water. High blood pressure, bladder infections, constipation, slower thought process and reaction time, and short term memory loss to name just a few. It would be interesting to see some studies done on this. Want to look your best, get rid of those fine lines, pimples and dry skin? Drink your water! Water plumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy, and resilient. Remember water is essential for a healthy, active, happy body! Give your body what it needs! Raise that water bottle and take a toast to a healthier you!

They also provide a driving tour through Peninsula State Park and have a photo stop at the historic Eagle Bluff lighthouse, one of Door County’s 12 historic lighthouses. Your local guide onboard shares the legend and lore unique to each area. Next, a stop in the quaint village of Fish Creek is a must. This is my personal favorite village on the peninsula. Located at the north entrance to the state park, Fish Creek has cozy inns, great restaurants and cafés, and a beach overlooking the calm shores of the bay. Northward in Sister Bay, take some time to browse the local shops as well as visit Al Johnson’s - an authentic Swedish restaurant and boutique where you can find goats grazing the sod roof! It is quite a sight, and has made this place one of Door County’s most photographed buildings. Another must “to do” while in Door County is enjoying a traditional Fish Boil! Many restaurants advertise this fun and amusing feast/event each evening. The meal consists of fresh caught Lake Michigan whitefish cut into small chunks and cooked in boiling water with red potatoes onions. Cooked outdoors along the shores and lawns in big kettles on a roaring fire, the cooks will eventually use a can of kerosene to erupt the fire below and create a “boil over” of the unwanted fats and impurities in the kettle. This leaves only the purest

and tastiest ingredients behind for your enjoyment. An experience and feast not to be missed! Join me and DIRECTIONS Tours in late August as we once again set our sails north to Door County! DOOR COUNTY & HOUSE ON

The Great Western Park tour is a feast for all senses! This tour features the beauty of South Dakota and Wyoming. South Dakota is known for more types of rock formations and sediments than anywhere else in the continental USA. Early afternoon will bring us to South Dakota’s Famous Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. Covered in western murals completely made out of corn, this unique and one-of-a-kind attraction is a must see. This evening will find us just a little further west in Chamberlain, SD with a stay at the famous “Al’s Oasis” on the Missouri River. To the west finds us in the unique Badlands National Park. Created by the erosion of the earth’s surface everyday, The Badland’s terrain carves out an incredible sandcastle-like valley… absolutely stunning! We will finish our visit of the Badlands at the famous Wall Drug Store.

Westward we arrive at majestic Black Hills. Born out of convulsions within the earth’s crust, shaped by wind and water, South Dakota’s Black Hills have witnessed the drama of the West unfold-from the struggles of the Lakota Sioux to the rush of gold fever-stricken miners, to the battles of conservationist looking to preserve these natural wonders for future generations. Now

we will explore the Black Hills just as our pioneers did years ago. Enjoy touring Mount Rushmore, Keystone, and Crazy Horse Monument. Pushing into Wyoming we will travel Sitting Bull Pass and the Ten Sleep Canyon. This spectacular scenery is breathtaking as we work our way through the canyon!

We now have arrived at Yellowstone National Park - America’s first National Park, established in 1872 by pioneer Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden. Located along the upper Rocky Mountain range in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Yellowstone is one of America’s most remote National Parks. Surrounded by dense forest and mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges and features some of the world’s most dynamic natural features. The park was the first of its kind in our country, and is known for its wildlife and geothermal features. More than two million acres, or 3,000 square miles, stretch over the surface area that is known as Yellowstone. The park is so diverse and large that the park is literally divided into many climate and natural zones. The most famous area is known as the Yellowstone Caldera. Half of the world’s geothermal features are in this area of Yellowstone. Fueled

by an ongoing underground volcano, lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. It is one of the largest remaining ecosystems on our planet. The caldera area features some of the most impressive geysers and hot springs in the park. The most famous geyser in the park, and perhaps in the world, is Old Faithful Geyser. Although not the largest or most powerful geyser in the park, Old Faithful is just that... “faithful” and dependable. Park Rangers have been able to estimate Old Faithful’s eruptions for over 100 years. Today, crowds line the boardwalk around Old Faithful for the geyser’s “show” approximately every 90 minutes. The largest geyser is located just west of Old Faithful, known as Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin. There are over 300 geysers in Yellowstone and a total of at least 10,000 geothermal features throughout the park. Amazingly over two-thirds of the world’s geysers are located in Yellowstone! Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles make Yellowstone their home, including several that are either endangered or threatened. Many found only in this region of North America. Grizzly and Black bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk are native to Yellowstone. Visitors often encounter many of the parks wildlife. Driving through the park offers views of many herds of animals as well as an occasional bear sighting as well.

One of the park’s biggest focal points is Lake Yellowstone. Located in the center of Yellowstone and flowing into the majestic Yellowstone River to the south, the lake compromises more than 100 miles of shoreline. Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park and is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet. Many Geysers, fumaroles and hot springs are found alongside and even in the lake making some spectacular scenery! Just south of Yellowstone we will explore The Grand Tetons National Park. The Tetons are some of the most photographed mountains in the world due to their drastic elevation and no foothills. At the base of the Tetons we will enjoy an

incredible boat cruise on Jenny Lake. While in the Tetons we will enjoy our overnights in Jackson Hole. Many shops and boutiques offer great western collectables. If you are more adventurous, we will be offering a guided float trip down the Snake River for wildlife sightings. One evening we will be entertained by the cowboys and cowgirls at the famous Jackson Hole BAR J Chuck Wagon Dinner Show. Don’t Miss Out! This tour is one of our most popular every year with an incredible price that cannot be beat!

employer-sponsored retirement plans and your anticipated financial— in determining when you should start taking Social Security. 2) Employment — If you work while receiving Social Security benefits before you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 you earn over an annual limit, which generally increases each year. In the year you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $3 you earn over the limit before your birthday. But once you reach full retirement age, your benefits will no

longer be adjusted for earned income. 3) Marital status — As a spouse, you can generally receive Social Security payments based on your own earnings record or collect a spousal benefit of up to 50% of your husband’s Social Security benefit. The benefit will be reduced if you start taking it before your full retirement age. To start collecting Social Security spousal benefits, you must be at least 62 years old and your husband must also have filed for his own benefits. If you’re divorced, and you’re not currently married, you can generally receive benefits on your ex-husband’s

Social Security record, as long as you meet certain conditions. (For example, you had to have been married to your ex-husband for at least 10 years.) No matter how much Social Security you ultimately receive, it’s almost certainly not going to be enough to provide all the income you’ll need. So during your working years, try to contribute as much as you can, for as long as you can, to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. At the same time, look for other investment opportunities. And when you reach retirement, create a withdrawal strategy that allows you to stretch out the income you receive from your investments for as long as you can. By saving and investing as much as possible during your working years, maximizing your Social Security payments and carefully managing your financial assets when you’re retired, you can help improve your chances of enjoying the retirement lifestyle you deserve. This information is believed to be reliable, but investors should rely on information from the Social Security Administration before

making a decision on when to take Social Security benefits. It is general information and not meant to cover all scenarios. Your situation may be different, so be sure to discuss this with the Social Security Administration prior to taking benefits.

Judy’s Tips For August

silverspaceGETTING FAMILIAR WITH ESTATE

PLANNING TERMINOLOGY by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law

The key to the term “estate planning” is PLANNING. Establishing estate planning documents plans for issues that could arise in the future, namely issues related to incapacity. The family of a senior with powers of attorney in place, for example, can handle the senior’s affairs without the need to set up a court-ordered guardianship; the family had “planned” ahead for the possibility of the loved one’s incapacity. Some people feel uncomfortable meeting with an attorney to discuss their estate planning needs because of a lack of familiarity with the law. A good lawyer will discuss your available options in simple terms that a person with no legal training can comprehend. You can also relieve some of that hesitancy by familiarizing yourself with legal terminology before meeting with a qualified estate planning attorney to discuss the appropriate

choices for you. The following is a short list of common legal terms that may come up in an estate planning meeting. Take just a few minutes to familiarize yourself with this list and keep it handy for future reference.Attorney-in-Fact: A person who is named under a Power of Attorney to act on behalf of another person while they are unable or incapacitated. Beneficiary: A person or entity that receives a benefit from an estate, trust or asset transfer vehicle.Conservator of the Estate: A court-appointed supervisor in charge of the care of a minor or incompetent person’s financial well being.Decedent: A person who has passed away.Estate: All the assets owned by a decedent upon his or her death.Executor/Personal Representative: The person responsible for

settling a decedent’s estate.Grantor: A person who transfers an asset to another person or entity.Guardian of the Person: A court appointed supervisor in charge of the care of a minor or incompetent person’s physical well-being.Irrevocable Trust: A trust in which the trustor has not reserved the right to revoke and cannot change the wording in the trust.Living Trust: A trust established and operating during the trustor’s lifetime. A living trust serves the same function as a will except that the proceeds of the will go to the trustor’s beneficiaries immediately at the trustor’s death (instead of going through the probate process first). Probate: The legal process used to assemble and transfer a decedent’s assets to the intended beneficiaries and settle a decedent’s outstanding

debts. In St. Louis County, probate typically takes nine months to one year.Revocable Trust: A trust in which the trustor reserves the right to revoke. Living Trusts are examples of Revocable Trusts.Testator/Testatrix: The creator of a will.Trust: A legal arrangement created to facilitate the transfer of property to a trustee for the benefit of a beneficiary.Trustee: A person or entity named in a trust agreement to be responsible for holding and administering the trust assets according to the terms of the trust. Will: A legal document used to transfer assets upon a decedent’s death.

Many elderly people I know dread, and even fear, losing their ability to think clearly. Want to know one way to avoid mental confusion? You guessed it—stay hydrated! Summertime can be especially hard to keep well hydrated, but we should make the effort. How much effort? Experts are still recommending 6 to 8 glasses of water per day to stay well hydrated. Or another, non-alcoholic, non-caffeine fluid like juice or milk will work just as well. Some fluid can be ingested from fruits like apples, watermelons, and so forth. Fluid is lost from not only perspiring and urinating, but did you know we also lose fluid from breathing? Having a glass of water, milk or juice first thing in the morning is important to revitalize our fluid level.Dehydration can not only cause

mental confusion, it can also cause, dry mouth, cracked lips, sunken eyes, hollow cheeks, poor skin tone, general weakness, and drowsiness. Did you know that feeling thirsty is a sense that can be lost? It can be difficult to remember to drink enough fluid if you don’t even feel thirsty. Some people find the taste of water boring, but adding a slice of lime or lemon can improve the flavor. Just be certain to properly wash the fruit before you slice it. Personally, I grew up drinking Kool-Aid and still enjoy it! Another reason some people don’t drink enough fluid is because they have problems with trips to the bathroom. They believe that if they don’t drink as much they won’t have to go as much. If a person has dementia, it can be difficult to communicate the

need. Are you a caregiver? How do you encourage your charge to take in enough fluid each day? Another thing to consider is that some seniors are on diuretics which actually need an increased fluid intake in order to function properly and safely. Certain other medications can also cause dehydration. It is very important to check whether your medications have any food or fluid requirements, and follow them. Lastly, please don’t use individual bottled water if you can avoid it. We have so many plastic bottles that aren’t being recycled. If you are concerned about your tap water, perhaps you could invest in a filter that attaches to your faucet, or a water pitcher that filters your water. The most important point to remember is that our bodies need fluid every day.

metroALL ADULT DANCE STUDIO CELEBRATES 8 YEARS

by Pat AdamsDancing Thru Life is an all adult studio for tap, ballet and jazz. The studio will be starting it’s 8th year on September 15, 2014. While other studio’s have adult

classes, many times those classes contain teenagers too. At Dancing Thru Life, all the students are over age 21 and range up to age 78. There are classes at all levels, Beginner I and II, Intermediate I and II, and Advanced I and II. Day and evening classes are available. Because of the diversity of the classes and the

number of classes offered, many women use the studio instead of a gym. Dancing is a fun way to exercise and stay fit. DANCING THRU LIFE FALL SCHEDULE 2014
