NEW PICNIC
SHELTERS
ARRIVE IN DURBIN
Your CDD Board of Supervisors, District and Amenity Center staff are proud to announce
the arrival of two new picnic shelters in the South activity field. The new additions;
concrete patios, picnic tables, shelters and landscaping are a wonderful
addition to our community.
These will now give residents a place to gather during Food Truck Fridays, events or
simply enjoying our wonderful amenities. There will be an additional shelter installed at
the North facility as well, stay tuned for more details.
Below is a picture of your CDD Board under one of our shelters. Pictured are:
Secretary Jason Harrah, Secretary Debbie Driscoll, Chairman Peter Pollicino,
Vice-Chairman Tim Brownlee and Secretary Sarah Hall.
DURBIN CROSSING
POND PRESS
Happy August Durbin Crossing! I thought I would take advantage of this ridiculously hot
weather to discuss the changes that can occur in ponds in the summer. As ambient temper-
atures begin to increase come spring, a more gradual increase in water temperature also
occurs. The surface layer of a pond, where there is adequate light penetration, called the
photic zone, warms up at a faster rate than the bottom water where less light reaches. On a
molecular scale, the change in temperature correlates to a change in density. Cooler water
is more dense than warm water, and is therefore heavier. In deep enough ponds, where
there is inadequate mixing of the water column, this density change can create two sepa-
rate and distinct temperature layers. This is called stratification. The meeting point of these
two layers is called the thermocline, and is defined as a thin but distinct layer in a large
body of fluid (e.g. an ocean or lake), in which temperature changes more rapidly with
depth than it does in the layers above or below. Many people who have swum in large
lakes or reservoirs in the summer may have experienced this as they swim through the
warm surface waters, only to dive down and hit a layer of icy water about 6 feet from the
surface.
Despite its intangible state, this thermocline can have a huge effect on a pond and its
health. Because of the difference in water densities above and below, the thermocline can
act as a semi-permeable membrane. Oxygen, for example, is mostly unable to penetrate
the thermocline, even though cold water usually holds more oxygen than warm water.
Since the cold water is on the bottom of the pond and without access to surface air, howev-
er, any oxygen is quickly used up by any present organisms, but is not replenished. This
leads to a pond that is anoxic on the bottom, unable to support most forms of life (e.g. fish,
turtles, etc.). On the other side, the warm surface waters, uncooled because they are not
mixing with the cool bottom water, becomes the perfect environment for growing algae.
Additionally, many of the necessary microbes needed for converting nutrients into forms
algae is less able to use live on the bottom of the pond, which can leave the surface waters
looking decidedly green. Now, in the interest of not losing your interest, to be continued…

IMPORTANT POLICY
REMINDERS Attention ALL Durbin Residents,
The summer is winding down but we would like to finish strong! We hope you are aware that your Durbin
Crossing Amenity Center staff is excited and proud to serve you. We work hard to make sure your amenities
are clean, warm, welcoming and ready for use, when you are ready! Whether you are able to come to the
amenities daily, monthly or just when all of the planets align, we want to make it great. To see residents en-
joying the amenities, the Norman Rockwell atmosphere we strive to provide and making memories right here,
is priceless. However, we need a bit of help to keep the dream alive, please.
We would like to remind you of a few VERY important Amenity policies and procedures:
• Proper swimming apparel is necessary to ensure a pleasant swimming experience for ALL! When
deciding what swimsuit to wear to either Durbin pool, please consider that this is a family, commu-
nity pool. Should the swimsuit you choose NOT cover all the appropriate parts you may be asked to
leave the facility. So, please leave that new, adorable, slightly risqué suit for the beach. Thank you
for understanding and cooperation.
• Your DC access card is mandatory to enter the pools, gym, tennis courts, all amenities. If you have lost
your card - replacement cards may be purchased for $25, cash or check only please. It just takes a couple
of minutes to get a replacement card, at the South Amenity Center.
• If you are a new resident who has not yet obtained your cards, please call the South Amenity Center office
for full details on what is required, 904-230-2011. We look forward to meeting you.
• The age to enter either pool facility, North or South, without an adult is 15 years of age, no excep-
tions. Please note, that ages will be checked at the front gates. Failure to adhere to this policy or fal-
sifying information can result in the loss of Amenity privileges.
• The age to enter the gym without an adult is 16 years of age. Again, ages checked upon entry.
• The age to enter the gym with an adult, 18 years or older, is 12 years of age.
• You are allowed to bring up to five guests per visit to either pool facility. Please sign your guest(s) in
upon entry. Guests are tracked from Spring Break to Labor Day weekend and you are allowed 24
complimentary guests during that time frame. Also, you must remain with your guest(s) for the
duration of their visit.
We would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation. We are a growing community and would
like to maintain that small town, family friendly atmosphere we have all grown accustomed to.
We look forward to seeing you on your next visit.

Sleepover Party September 9th
7PM South Durbin
We would like to take a minute and congratulate ALL our Durbin Dol-phins on completing their 4
th season! Who are the Durbin Dolphins, you
might ask? Well, they are none other than our very own Durbin Crossing Swim Team. You might read the articles about their practice and meet times, but we want to make sure you knew more than just that nuts and bolts information.
The Dolphins this year had 178 of our young residents on their team. That’s right the team is made up entirely of residents, Durbin pride at its best! There were many other milestones this year besides the record num-ber of participants. Each week at the swim meets the kids were improving by leaps and bounds! They decreased their DQ slips while increasing their number of PR’s, personal records. This culminated with one of our strongest performances ever at the end of season Champs meet. This meet is where the Dolphins swim against ALL the other teams in our league, where our swimmers attained a whopping 157 PERSONAL RECORDS! Way to go Dolphins!
We even had four of our Dolphins place in the top three of their age groups. Keep in mind this is in a “pool” of ALL other swimmers in the league! Congratulations to Austin Tomas, Kathryn McFarland, Hayden Sunman and Emma Netzley, see enclosed picture with their trophy’s. Also, pictured is Dolphin President Terry Davis. This is Terry’s last official year to serve as President and we want to make sure to send out a big thank you for ALL his efforts over the past four years, thanks for the memories!
We would also be remiss if we didn’t thank Coach Ed, Matej, Jessica and ALL our Junior Coaches for a GREAT season. We also need to thank all the Dolphins, themselves, and their families for a GREAT year of swim-ming and support. Also, thank you to the Durbin Crossing community for allowing these kids to be a part of something special. Your continued sup-port truly makes Durbin Crossing standout!
Future Dolphins… if you have a child between the ages of 4 & 18 who is interested in joining the team next summer, keep an eye on this newsletter in January or February for registration details, which will open in March.
Go Dolphins!

Florida is the lightning capital of the United States and it is ranked as the
number one state for deaths due to lightning.
Did you know that lightning kills more people in the U.S.
than hurricanes and tornadoes combined?
Lightning travels at the speed of light, while thunder travels at the speed of sound.
A single bolt of lightning can discharge about 100 million bolts of electricity and can
travel as far as 10 miles from a cloud. It does not need to be dark directly overhead.
If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance!
It has been known to travel through clear air and strike 10 miles from the
storm like a bolt out of the blue!
Lightning is actually 5 times hotter than the sun’s surface!
With all of this knowledge and critical information we’d like to remind you of
Durbin Crossing’s thunderstorm policy. If we hear thunder or see lightning, we will
close the facility for 30 minutes. Every time thunder is heard or lightning is seen, the
clock is restarted to 30 minutes. This is strictly enforced for your safety!
No life is worth the risk!

teaching confidence, poise, and stage presence. The class is geared for 1st-5th graders. Our sched-
