August 2019 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the August 2019 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. Birdwatchers and ornithologists have some excellent books to look forward to. Seabirds are all the rage at the moment and we have received stock of the privately published Around the World for Albatrosses: Where to See All the Albatross Species. Bloomsbury, meanwhile, has three great titles lined up for January: A new Poyser monograph, The Common Buzzard, a new Helm Field Guide, Birds of Cyprus, and a new photographic guide, Birds of Greece. Also projected for January is the fifth edition of RSPB Complete Birds of Britain and Europe from Dorling Kindersley. Of local interest is the privately published Rostherne Mere – Birds of Mere and Margin: One Hundred and Thirty Years of Observations, which is in stock now. There is only one notable mammal title to announce this month, the paperback of Giraffe: Biology, Behaviour and Conservation, due October from Cambridge University Press. Similarly, there is one particular herpetology highlight to mention: Field Guide to Frogs & Other Amphibians of Africa, due October from Penguin Random House South Africa. We have just received stock of the French book La Passion des Salamandres : Le Tour du Monde des Urodèles en 80 Histoires, published by Penclen Edition. August brings some amazing invertebrate books. The Royal Entomological Society has just published British Coleoptera Larvae: A Guide to the Families and Major Subfamilies, a unique book that has been 40 years in the making. CABI Publishing has announced Courtship and Mating in Butterflies for December. And Harvard University Press will publish Desert Navigator: The Journey of an Ant in January – the author Rüdiger Wehner has worked on ants for almost half a century. We also received stock of the French Les Coléoptères Saproxyliques de France: Catalogue Écologique Illustré, published by the Paris Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. Lastly, not an insect, but still of tremendous interest, we will soon have stock of Borneo Spiders: A Photographic Field Guide, published by the Sabah Forestry Department. Conservation biologists can look out for the fifth edition of Live Trapping of Small Mammals: A Practical Guide, published by The Mammal Society, which has been unavailable for a while. Two paperback reissues come in the form of Biological Invasions and Animal Behaviour, due October from Cambridge University Press, and The Deep: The Hidden Wonders of Our Oceans and How We Can Protect Them, due January from Wildfire. Wider environmental concerns are addressed in Greta's Story: The Schoolgirl Who Went on Strike to Save the Planet, due August from Simon & Schuster, and the paperback reissue of The Uninhabitable Earth: A Story of the Future, due February from Penguin Books. Practising biologists will be interested to hear that Cambridge University Press is reissuing The Study of Behavior: Organization, Methods, and Principles in paperback in October. More theoretically inclined researchers, on the other hand, can look out for the edited collection The Theory of Evolution: Principles, Concepts, and Assumptions, due January from the University of Chicago Press. We round off this month's selection with a mixture of books, including some nature writing. Richard Mabey's next book will be titled Turning the Boat for Home: A Life Writing about Nature, and is expected October from Chatto & Windus, while Jonathan Franzen's The End of the End of the Earth will be reissued in paperback in November by Fourth Estate. Environmental history is represented this month by The Great Fen: A Journey Through Time, due November from NatureBureau. And there is one further book, also in stock now, on the Cheshire Meres tying in with the bird book mentioned above: Rostherne Mere – Aspects of a Wetland Nature Reserve: Wildlife, People and Science Through Time. As always, if you are looking for a particular title that we do not yet have in our range, or you would like to suggest a title for NHBS to stock, please do get in touch.
