From the Pastor’s Desk 2 Last week I returned from vacation in time for 1st Communion roughly three months after it was originally scheduled. It was a pleasure to celebrate this important step for these children and their families. It was also a reminder that we are blessed with many children in our parish. Children constantly remind us to center our lives on others rather than ourselves – their needs are our blessings. 1st Communion turns our minds to the Eucharist which reminds us of our connection to one another, both living and deceased, in faith – the Church consists of the saints in heaven, those in purgatory, and those of us pilgrims on earth. The presence of the families connected to these children produced one of the largest crowds at Mass this summer, and it called to mind our connection to one another and even to those who are related but have
passed away. We are all united in faith by the Eucharist in a mysterious yet concretely physical way, as we receive the Lord in the form of bread and become what we eat – members of the Body of Christ, united in the Holy Spirit. This truth needs to be communicated to our children in our worship and our lives. As we do so, we reinforce our own beliefs. Celebrations of the sacraments of initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist – are special times when we recall that we are all made by the same Creator, and made for union with that same Creator. We have a common origin and destiny. The Coronavirus is ever present in the news, in our lives, in forcing us to wear masks and physically distance, and of course the cancellation of sports and even work. As with all things, there exists a silver lining in every challenge, disappointment, and tragedy. For example, because of COVID-19 the courts of the five boroughs of New York were closed down in March and April. When they opened in May, the “pundits” predicted they would be overwhelmed with filings for divorce. Instead, the filings for divorce were down 45% compared to the previous year. I suspect that without the distractions and busyness of our “normal” lives, spouses were able to give the time required to their marriages to make them work, maybe even prosper. I have heard more than one parent say that it has been good to have the family home for dinner regularly in the evening. Our faith should be teaching us to say, in the midst of this or any challenge, “What does the Lord want us to learn from all this?” I suspect that if we can come together and trust one another, we will emerge a stronger community for having gone thru the pandemic together.
It is a privilege to be your Pastor.
Father Albert, O.S.B.
