NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST

MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a league-leading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-2-29 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Jackals have sold 25 players to affiliated organizations since 2006.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their season-long eight-game winning streak, which ended on June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton.

MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386.

POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park.

FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals.

OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6.

SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

BOULDERS DOUBLE UP JACKALS IN SERIES FINALESunday, August 21 recap

Little Falls, N.J. – The Rockland Boulders took the series finale from the New Jersey Jackals, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Jackals jumped out to an early lead as they plated a run in the bottom of the first inning. Mike DeJesus, D’Angelo Jimenez and Myron Leslie all notched consecutive walks before DeJesus scored on a groundout by Kris Sanchez.

In the top of the third, the Boulders answered against New Jersey starter Sh-uan Ellis. Chase Weems led off with a walk and Ray Stokes followed with a single. After a fly out advanced Weems to third and Stokes stole second, Jer-emy Slayden singled to left to score both runners and take a 2-1 lead.

New Jersey came right back in the bottom of the frame when Sean Smith doubled to left and moved to third on a single by DeJesus. The next batter, Jimenez, flew out to shallow right field, but Smith came around to score on the sacrifice fly to tie the game.

That score held until the top of the sixth when Rockland plated two runs. Barry Wesson began with a single and went to third on single by Norm Hutchins. With one out, Sanchez fielded a grounder at first base and made an errant throw home to allow Wesson to score. Later in the inning, Chase Weems drove in Hutchins with a single to make the score 4-2.

Rockland increased their advantage in the top of the seventh inning when Wesson cracked a two-run home run down the left field line after a leadoff walk to Slayden. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, Stokes reached on an error to plate an unearned run and increase the Boulders’ lead to 7-2.

New Jersey showed fight as they notched two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sanchez walked, Nick Giarraputo singled and Mike Jones singled to lead off the inning. After a pop out and a strikeout, Smith ripped a double to right-centerfield to score Sanchez and Giarraputo to make it a 7-4 game. However, Rockland plated an additional run in the ninth inning on a single by Chase Weems to extend their lead to 8-4.

Jon Velasquez (7-5) won his third straight decision after tossing six innings and allowing just two runs. Ellis (5-3) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Casey Hodges notched his first save of the season after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings to end the game.

JACKAL BITES: The loss snapped New Jersey’s four-game winning streak… With the loss, the Jackals finished the season 10-4 against Rockland… With two hits, Myron Leslie now has 27 multi-hit games on the year.

August 23, 1992 - There were no hits in Clearwater’s 1-0 victory over Winter Ha-ven in the Single-A Florida State League. In what appeared to be the first profes-sional game in 40 years without a hit, Andy Carter and the Clearwater Phillies beat Scott Bakkum and the Winter Haven Red Sox. The only run scored in the sev-enth inning on a pair of walks and a pair of sacrifice bunts.

August 24, 1989 - After weeks of legal wrangling, Commissioner Bart Giamatti permanently bans Pete Rose from base-ball for his alleged gambling on major league games.

August 25, 1922 - The Cubs beat the Phil-lies 26-23. The Cubs led 25-6 in the fourth inning, but held on as the game ended with the Phillies leaving the bases loaded.
