Thanks be to God we did not get a second round of light-ning and the Air Quality Index has been much better this week. Let's continue to pray for the health of our CAL Firefighters and the recovery of those affected. It is sad to hear of the many homes in the Santa Cruz mountains being destroyed and the thousands displaced. Amid the destruction however, there is always hope. Take for example the redwood trees that have survived the fire. Their bark and heartwood make these trees resilient. What an image for us! Though there may be so much division and disorder on the natural and social order around us, there are Christians who remain permanent and joyful beacons of hope. St. John Vianney, make us resilient!
So much going on in our parish this week with in-person and livestreamed Saturday evening and Sunday Masses, youth ministry kick-off, faith formation, and food distribu-tion volunteer opportunities. This is how we stay resilient!

Gracias a Dios no recibimos una se-gunda ronda de relampagos y el
índice de calidad del aire ha sido mucho mejor esta semana. Sigamos orando por la salud de nuestros Bomberos CAL y por la recuperación de los afecta-dos. Es triste escuchar que muchas casas en las montañas de Santa Cruz están siendo destruidas y miles de personas desplazadas. Sin embargo, en medio de la destrucción, siempre hay esperanza. Tomemos, por ejemplo, los árboles secuoyas que han sobrevivido al incendio. Su corteza y duramen hacen que estos árboles sean resistentes. ¡Qué imagen para nosotros! Aunque puede haber tanta división y desorden en el orden natural y social que nos rodea, hay cristianos que siguen siendo faros de esperanza permanentes y gozosos. ¡San Juan Vian-ney, haznos resistentes!
Muchas cosas están sucediendo en nuestra par-roquia esta semana con misas en persona y en vivo los sábados por la noche y los domingos, el inicio del ministerio juvenil, la formación en la fe y las oportunidades de voluntariado en la distribución de alimentos. ¡Así es como nos mantenemos re-sistentes!

The Catholic Charities Food Distribution is in need of 15 volunteers on Thurs-days, from 9AM-11AM, in our com-munity center parking lot. Please join Deacon Raul Mendoza and our seminarian PJ in serving the 850+ households of our area. All social distance protocols are observed. Volunteers drop pre-prepared boxes in open trunks, help direct traffic, assist in registration.

FAITH FORMATION
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24
This is my favorite shirt — it represents the school where my children attend. I like to wear this shirt to show my children that I am proud of them and support them in everything they do. No matter what is going on at the school, I want to support them. I attend all of the sporting events, music programs, and fund raisers. I volunteer to serve on school committees and often serve as a chaperone on field trips or other activities. I attend Parent's Night and Meet the Teacher. In other words, I want to do eve-rything possible to be a part of my children's school activities. Now, it isn't always easy to do all of these things. It sometimes requires sacrifice. Sometimes, I may have to make a difficult choice between doing something I really want to do and attending a function that is important to my children and their school activities. Commitment often requires sacrifice. That is the lesson that Jesus was explaining to his disciples in our Bible lesson today. He was telling them about some diffi-cult situations he would be facing in his life. He told them that he was going to have to go to Jerusalem where he would be persecuted at the hands of the religious leaders, be killed, and then on the third day he would be raised up alive. Simon Peter protested! "No! That can never be!" But Jesus stood firm. "Get behind me, Satan! You are seeing things from a human point of view, not from God's." Then Jesus went on to tell his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is any-thing worth more than your soul?" God sent his Son that the world might be saved, but it was not easy. Salvation came through the death of Christ on the cross. Jesus has called us to take up our cross and follow him, he never prom-ised that it would be easy, but it will be worth it. There us no greater joy than following Jesus. Let's ask God to help us to be faithful followers of Jesus. Father, we thank you for sending your Son. It is our desire to take up our cross and follow him every day. In Jesus' name we pray. EL TENTADOR Parece que Jesús es bastante duro con Pedro, de acuerdo con el Evangelio de hoy, cuando lo llama “Satanás” por cuestionar la predic-ción de Jesús sobre su pasión. THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dra-matically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty
reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to ven-erate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and rela-tionship with the cross recalls little of the contempt orig-inally associated with it. LA CRUZ DE JESÚS La percepción de una cruz cambió dramáticamente des-pués de la crucifixión de Jesús. Antes de ese suceso, la muerte en una cruz no era tan solo horrible, sino que era degradante. Era un castigo reservado únicamente para los más horrendos criminales. La palabra “gloria” no habría ha-llado su lugar en una oración que contuviera la palabra “cruz”. Mas todo esto cambió con Jesús. Con el pasar del tiempo, los creyentes comenzaron a venerar y a honrar la Cruz. La pintaron, esculpieron, y tallaron imágenes de la misma. Muchos perdieron su vida por asociar-se con ella. Hoy nuestra reverencia y relación con la cruz poco recuerda el desprecio al que originalmente estuvo asociada.
