What is the screening process? The screener is NOT an assessment, such as the forthcoming Science

of Teaching Reading exam, but rather a process to ensure that any cohort leaders have sufficient knowledge and skills to complete Cohort Leader training and work successfully. This task evaluates: Knowledge and skills grounded in scientifically based reading practices Communication and coaching skill Technical ability to function as cohort leader – Canvas use is required for all

Cohort Leaders and some basic technological competence is required for success

This screener has limited test security and while applicants are asked to complete the exercise on their own there is no verification.

Westat Leads Cohort Leader Screening

Westat, the Regional Comprehensive Center supporting Texas, leads the Cohort Leader screening process. Westat has convened a panel of

statewide and national experts in the Science of Teaching Reading who review materials submitted by cohort leader applicants.

Panel Profile 12 members 9 English; 3 Biliteracy 8 located in Texas; 4 Other US states 5 educational consultants; 2 district

staff; 2 professors; 1 charter; 2 other organizations (National Center for Improving Literacy; Dyslexia Center of Austin)

Westat and Review Panel: Key Takeaways

Overall, the expert panel had serious concerns about those who passed and required assurance that even many applicants who passed would have further training given the magnitude of errors around crucial conceptions such as phoneme articulation. The screening process further showed that many highly qualified

individuals with advanced education have not been grounded in the same research regarding scientifically based-reading practices.
